Even so, I still don't see anything racist in what he said.
For the last few days I have watched his supporters misrepresent his tweets by selectively quoting portions that leave out the worst of the attack against these congresswomen and then try to explain it all away as leadership “advice”. If his words are not racist then why can’t they stand on their own without the What-He-Really-Meant filter.

Who are the vicious ones? Those who are trying to destroy our country or those who get called out and exposed for their lies and schemes and get their feelings hurt?

Destroy your country? What are you on about dude?

They are trying to excuse the inexcusable.

They're lobbying for the things Donald likes -- that's why he hires them.

Of course, now that the word of Donald is the sole arbiter of right and wrong, it makes little difference now.

Depends on whether or not Matthew 16:26 means anything to you...
What _ the atheist is quoting scripture now? What does that mean to you?
A man forfeits his soul by rejecting Jesus/God. King Solomon was the richest man ever, more than Besos, but he didn't forfeit his soul. It is the love of money that leads to all sorts of evil, not being rich.
By all means hold onto to that one, that was meant for you.

Do you know what those "…." are supposed to mean?

Because to someone like me, this is how I might define racism. Take white supremacists, for example. They are clearly racists. They don't just hate some black people, they hate all black people, apparently. If a white supremacist were to tell a black person to go back to where their race was initially from, they would be meaning that about all black people, regardless. Trump wasn't meaning it in the same way. Trump wasn't lashing out at entire ethnicity groups, he was only lashing out at these 4 congress women in particular. But not because he was racist towards their ethnicity, but because some of their ideologies were anti-American, etc.

Seriously? Of course it doesn't look racist when you cut out the racist parts.

Are you really unaware of the entirety of what he said or are you lying to us, hoping that we haven't read the whole thing?

Is right-wing media selectively editing his tweets? Because there seem to be a lot of TrumpFans focusing on the last part and completely overlooking the first part.
I read 54 words as the entire tweet. Okay, was their something more or did you consume some fake news from CNN?

What _ the atheist is quoting scripture now?

And the Christian is ignoring it -- welcome to the looking-glass.

If you knew me, you'd know that 1. I'm agnostic, not atheist, and 2. I find Scripture very useful, and chock full of good moral teachings... more so than far too many Christians I've known.

What does that mean to you?

It means there are some things that money can't buy... ask Simon Magus.

A man forfeits his soul by rejecting Jesus/God. King Solomon was the richest man ever, more than Besos, but he didn't forfeit his soul.

Agreed... he didn't sell out.

It is the love of money that leads to all sorts of evil, not being rich.

Yes, I know. So when I hear Christians defend Donald's actions by pointing to the economy, I can see what they love.

By all means hold onto to that one, that was meant for you.

Clearly nobody else has any use for it.

Given this thread attracts people who experience US politics how do people see this on the Machiavelli-mindless spectrum. Not so much a dead cat but a dead skunk maybe?

(The idea of the "dead cat" is if you slam a dead cat on the table then everyone will be talking about the dead cat and not what you don't want them to talk about)

The Machiavelli theory goes that Trump is cleverly focussing on Democrats tainted by the S word (socialism) though will this be effective this far out of the election given the Democrat candidate is a long way from being selected? Or is there something Trump wants to distract attention away from?

Or was a bored Trump just reacting to something he saw on TV?
Yes, it was very clever. The old school Far Left Dems and the new school Super Far Left Dems were having a nasty little war between themselves to see who would be the face of the Democratic Party. Most people in Trump's position would just say "wonderful". Do nothing and enjoy watching them tear each other apart.

But Trump wants the Super Far Left crazies to be the face of the Dem Party for 2020, so he makes a comment which assures that every Dem has to rally behind the odd squad. It's completely irrelevant whether the comments are or aren't racist. They were intended to make everyone FREAK OUT! about RACISM! and get in line behind those four radical ladies, and it worked. It also keeps them in the headlines, which is great for Trump, and he's no doubt aware of recent polling showing that the more Americans hear from these ladies, the less they like them. And that's why Trump's been tweeting about the incident every day since his original tweet. If it were possible, I'm sure he'd like to tweet about this every half hour for the next year.

Plus, although it couldn't have been anticipated, Trump got the extra bonus of the Democrats nearly descending into anarchy of the floor of the House. And these people want to govern us?

In the past when I've heard Trump supporters say he plays "4D chess" I've always been dubious about it, but this time, yeah, it was clever.

Yes, throw out charges of "fake news" without so much as bothering to read either the original tweet, a thorough news article, or even the rest of this very thread.

But to answer your question, there was more:

Donald J. Trump on Twitter

So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly......

...and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how....

....it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!

Your quote started halfway through the 2nd part of his tweet, missing the core of the racist context. If that's truly all you saw of it, then somebody in conservative media land is lying to you.

What exactly is the goal of the left here then? Let's say that all Americans ended up agreeing that Trump's remarks were racist. What comes next? What should that result in? Trump publicly apologizing? Steps to begin removing him from office? What???

I can't speak for everybody, but personally, I don't see him apologizing (that would constitute conceding defeat) and I think the impeachment thing is a waste of time. My hope is that he doesn't get re-elected. Part of the process of defeating him at the ballot is making sure that everybody knows exactly what he said and what it meant. Based on what I've seen from a number of posters here, there's a significant amount of confusion about what he actually said. My guess is that the right wing media machine is lying to people, selectively highlighting the half that @Ronald quoted and ignoring the racist bits preceding it.

General agreement that Trump's reaction to The Four was a racist rant directed at them personally rather than a substantive refutation of their political position.
