• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Do you think they look forward to heaven? Sure it's better than hell but the description of heavenly events in Revelation about the loud trumpets, Angelic singing and worship can easily cause a meltdown in any aspies. They couldn't even endure a day let alone eternity.

Carl, as someone with Asperger's I find that statement hurtful and hopefully wrong. I love the way that my mind works. Sure there increased difficulties in some areas but for myself I would not trade the way my mind works for anything. High Functioning Autism is not something that needs to be cured or should strive to be. It is a great variation of God's creation.

To OP, I have always looked forward least to the description of endless musical worship, bit being in His presence it won't matter.

I understand your sentiment - the truth is that the resurrected are perfected by Him and become what He intended - in that, no one will be disappointed - nothing good will be lost.

That's chilling.
I think you missed my point - any aspects of our nature that are not what He intended will fall away and the real perfected you will remain. Further there will be no more labels like 'Aspies' - So it's all good for those who have struggled with 'whatever issues' in this life if they are in Jesus and are their sins are covered by His Blood. Perfection and wholeness awaits.

Being autistic isn't an issue I struggle with. What I struggle with is a society that produces too much noise, complicated multi-tasking, and hectic pointless social activity. That's my issue. When I'm alone in my nice little house I enjoy being me. Thoroughly.

Now I'm aware that the Big Bad Fantasy is that our autistic minds will some day be replaced by more acceptable minds so that the good people of the world never have to make another annoying allowance for our quiet and solitude and simplicity. There's a problem with that. If I woke up tomorrow with a different body but the same mind--wow that would be a distressing experience I was having. If I woke up tomorrow with the same body but a different mind--then the thing is I never woke up. I am gone. Good luck to whoever got the body.

Autism isn't a discrete characteristic. It's how our minds work from the ground up.

It doesn't surprise me that the bible sometimes depicts God as the arch cis-Daddy of them all, surrounded by a ceaseless mirroring of his feelings about himself with the audio and light show turned up to eleven. Why not let autistic Christians imagine a heaven and God that receives them on their terms? Who wouldn't bruise them for all the hallelujahs in heaven. Who made their minds in such a way that they could experience the music and patterns of life and life hereafter with a particular nuance.

Fix the world. Fix heaven if you have to. So we can exist in it.

The way you said it can easily be interpreted to mean people with Aspger's syndrome are ineligible to live with the Lord because their literal thinking prevents them from believing in God, angels, etc. NOT TRUE! I also was offended by your comments.

So why did Jesus heal the deaf mute?

Would you prefer He left him with his condition?

Forgive me if I am misunderstanding...

Asperger's syndrome does not prevent people from communicating with others via speech and hearing. It is 100% the misunderstanding of so-called "normal" people who are unwilling to accept the way we think, which is really part of our personalities, that makes high-functioning ASD appear to be a disability.

Did I say that??? I dont think so...

The issue is that NONE of us are functioning as He intended.

We will be perfected at the resurrection...

Some of us will not even know ourselves !!!

It sounds like you think that for autistics the thing that most distinguishes us from the majority will be obliterated in our minds to the point of us not knowing ourselves so we'll fit in in heaven. How much can you take away from someone's mind before you have disrupted the Self, the very definition of me? For me being autistic is not problematic or painful except for not fitting into a world fashioned by and for the majority. If heaven is a place of such strictly enforced uniformity that only those lucky enough to fit the mold get to keep their identities intact--and I have never fit the mold--it feels more like the ultimate you-go-to-hell than a reward.

The reason I care, if you're wondering, is that's not unlike what some people fantasize about making happen to us here on earth. How nice that would be for everyone who has been a little frustrated and uncomfortable around us all these years. Surely our sense of Self is a small sacrifice for absolutely everyone one liking us so much better, including God. As I said, how chilling.

Sorry, I missed this.

First, my preferences wouldn't have been of any importance. I would have had zero say in it.

I'll quote it from Mark 7 because it's interesting.

Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him. After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

The man was brought to Jesus by some people who wanted him healed. Although Jesus was not shy about healing in front of loved ones, he took the man off alone. Then he touched his ears and tongue. Why? Is it possible he was communicating what this was all about and obtaining permission under safe, calm conditions? Good medical and social workers know to do this today, so why not Jesus? Anyway, whatever was going on, it elicited a deep sigh from Jesus. Healing an adult from something they were born with can have unintended consequences. There can be loss and displacement mixed in with the good.

In modern times some deaf people decline treatment for their own reasons and it's their business.

How much more so changes in brain function.

Sorry for the sad interpretation you are presenting - I can assure you that such concerns will melt away if you choose to be with Jesus when these events overtake us as they certainly will. Then no good thing will be lost and your final state of being will be way beyond the best you could ever imagine if you choose Him - so chill - then it most certainly wont be chilling as you suggest.
