I think they would do anything if they thought it had a chance of taking down Trump. Besides, the Left can call for the president's death and no one does anything about it. So they have good reason to believe they are safe.
Who's they? The failing New York Times? Gee, I can't imagine why they might have a bone to pick with Donald Trump. I don't see how this "takes him down" though. Just kinda exposes him for the fraud many of us already knew he was.

As to people "calling for his death" and no one doing anything about it, you'll have to take that up with his Secret Service staff as they would not be doing their jobs if they don't look into credible threats against the president or his family.

Yeah, what gives? Trump and his supporters celebrated when Clinton's private documents were published. Now that Trump's are out there, there ought to be a law?

I've always thought that if Trump was still a Democrat that his supporters would be singing a different tune, but apparently IOKIYAR and now it seems all wrongdoing by a Republican is quickly forgiven.

Like what they did when Comey illegally leaked documents through a friend?
I'm not sure what you're referring to but if the NYT did anything illegal by exposing this they should definitely face the consequences.

I am not conflating anything. It is against the law to disseminate private information like tax returns without your consent. Your CPA cannot do it. The IRS cannot do it. It is against the law. You expect them to maintain your privacy and not send your tax returns to your employer, or any other entity that is not legally entitled to them.

That's not quite true. Unless you can point to a law saying otherwise, I don't believe that there is a blanket prohibition on releasing sensitive information like this. Yes, there are rules in place covering tax preparers and government (including IRS) employees:

Section 7216 Frequently Asked Questions | Internal Revenue Service
Disclosure Laws | Internal Revenue Service

...but if I (not being an accountant or an IRS employee) happen across a copy of your return laying on the sidewalk, I am not bound by those rules.

Private is private. I understand and you understand what that means. It means that there are things I don't want to share with the world. It doesn't mean that I am hiding something nefarious; it means that I have a right to keep private what I want to keep private. I don't share my bank account with anyone either. The bank is not allowed to tell anyone what is in my savings account. We all expect those things to be our business, only.

You conflated this concept of privacy with the notion of private property and the acceptance of stolen property. They're not the same.

So, it is not a stretch to expect that the president can choose to keep his taxes private. And given how he is demonized in the media and on Capitol Hill, I would expect that he would not want his taxes given to them to review. They are not honest and would attempt to distort what those documents contain.

irrelevant

This isn't whistleblowing. It just Trump haters doing what they can to destroy Trump. That's all it is.

I didn't say it was whistleblowing. I was countering your contention that the leaker "would have no incentive to hide their identity". There are plenty of potential incentives to remain anonymous.

Why is it called sensitive information in the first place?

And, this is very important to all of our personal lives, because ... reasons.
When your candidate lies to you about his competencies AND, this performance, you still don't care. Fair enough. You don't care about the 10,000 lies/misinterpretations he's told since he's been in office.

He's a terrible businessman who doesn't know what he's doing. This SHOULD be evidence to a reasonable, rational person that perhaps Trump should NOT be dictating fiscal policy for your country. Keeping in mind, this isn't a one off. He is CONSISTENTLY losing money. This isn't a mistake; this is INEPTITUDE.

For the purposes of this discussion, I don't really care.

But if you're going to make a point, then make it. If you're going to dispute a claim, then dispute it. Otherwise, beating around the bush does nothing but obfuscate things.

I doubt the New York Times would be foolish enough to commit a felony obtaining this information and then publish it in their widely read publication.

You would be surprised what lengths a failing fake news outlet will do to increase ratings and enrage their base. Sad.

Because Clinton is a criminal and a law breaker and Trump is the Most Popular Elected President Ever.

Another thing that surprises me is when adults are willing to suspend logic and reason to make an argument that is both conjecture and ridiculously untrue.

I absolutely do not care how much he lost. All I care about is how much more I am making because of Trump.
That's actually really sad to me. How crappy do things have to get for other people before, maybe, you'd care?

Just hypothetically....

And how "crappy" are things right now for you? I hear a lot of chicken littles complaining about how the sky is falling because of Trump. Yet when I look outside, it is still there.

Why don't you post your tax returns on this forum right here right now?

And how "crappy" are things right now for you? I hear a lot of chicken littles complaining about how the sky is falling because of Trump. Yet when I look outside, it is still there.
And here's the problem: Why don't you listen to your countrymen who ARE suffering?
Because it's just bellyaching?
Because they're whining?
Because their liberal snowflakes who deserve to fail?
No. None of those.

But you have to be willing to show enough respect to your suffering countrymen to accept their stories as true. I am POSITIVE that everyone suffering is very aware of how many others are doing so very well. Sadly, the people doing very well ignore the others. That's a shame.

By way of example, farmers who overwhelmingly voted for Trump are suffering big time, AND are now having subsidies to their farms cut. They STILL support him EVEN when things are going bad for them.

I have no interest in having rational thought filled discussion with people who don't respond in a self preservation manner when their self preservation is threatenned. Had a democrat president done that, they'd lose their minds, but they feel beholden. That's to bad.
