That's right. We keep the commandments of Jesus because we do love him, and not as a set of rules to be accepted by Him. We desire and work toward holiness because we are already saved and accepted by God through the cross of Christ. Those who try to keep the commandments of Christ to be justified and accepted by God are treading the cross of Christ underfoot and bringing a curse on themselves.
I'd say that not all we need to be concerned about, it is because we love him but what about those who sincerely think, because the "said" they love him what they do is enough? And know this isn't just directed towards you, that's something we hear all the time and is even true to a point, but Jesus knows man well enough to know he had to be specific. If everyone kept to what you claim, why would Christ even bother with the parable of the Sheep/Goats where he goes further and is specific. He could just as well said, "Oh they love me or think they love me so that's all need be said", but he cares for even those that might misunderstand enough to be clear. Saying we love him and doing what we "think" is all we need to do, may not be enough, so he gets very specific about it in the parable, as if to say: "The bottom line, no matter what we may think, tell ourselves, say, or what we have heard, and so you are very clear on this, you do the things I'm telling you you must do here, or quite literally, to Hell with you."
That is a rule/law, call it what you will, that must be followed.
Same with the commandments, we have basic rules that we need to be sincere about trying to follow, and he was specific about those laws as well, just as he was about any add on rules. If we love him we will keep them, so if we think we love him but don't do those things, that is the very reason for warnings like the following scripture. Also, there are lists throughout the NT that contain add ons or derivatives of the commandments plus they mention the commandments yet again to be very clear exactly what those rules are.
In short, the following scripture is effectively stating we must do good in general, or that
there are rules, and the mentioned lists make the rules clear because Jesus wants no confusion on the issue. And I assume that's because the issue is often confused by men, especially those that claim we can be as lazy as we like with everything, even what the Goats were lazy with, and still make heaven..
John 5:28 “
Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.
