• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I don't hate Apple. It's not worth the effort. But then I don't have to use it. I have always been opposed to Apple on philosophical grounds. I always disliked their closed hardware-software system. I think it's been relaxed since the early days (as someone said here, you can install other OSes on Apple hardware now), but the damage was done in my view. And the hardware is still pretty much proprietary, though the difference from Windows units is a bit lessened now that so many are using laptops. Plus, the prices Apple charges are exorbitant. So I always favored the Windows platform.

However as the years went by it became clear to me that MS was a) exceedingly greedy, and b) exceedingly irresponsible with its Windows programming. I finally jumped ship to Linux, and consequently run Vista-era hardware (with increased RAM and an SSD) very nicely. I since have made peace with Win10, which I do think is a good system once you defang its intrusiveness. But once you get used to Linux there's no need to go back.

Anyone looking for a Linux that resembles the classic Win7 experience and is superbly put together, with great support, I would steer to MX Linux.

I've tried different flavors of Linux but I found the learning curve with command lines was a bit more than what I wanted. I will try it again when my macbooks kick the bucket, if they could make a slightly more user friendly version (less command line) I think it would really take off.

For what Apple is doing with it's hardware, they really deserve to go down. I will not buy a computer that I cannot take apart and replace parts. This is what I find misleading with these corporations, is their fake adherence to "environmental" concerns, yet these machines end up in the landfill as they are making them disposable.

Not a fan, just a user. Nearly all the computational people at my research institute use Macs. It's the supported Unix platform for laptops (with some version or other of Linux on the compute farm), and we're not about to write scientific software on a Windows machine.

Because of the "server" software stability I presume?

Most importantly because almost no one would use Windows-based code. Unix and its offspring have been the standard for decades, there is nearly universal familiarity with it, and a huge code base that assumes it.

I remember the sheer excitement when I laid hands on my first PPC iMac G5 complete with the all-singing all-dancing OS X Tiger.

Over £1,000 had disappeared from my bank account, but I didn't care. All I cared about was that I was now part of the privileged elite, the ones who could go about bragging "I'm a Mac". Naturally I had to invite my neighbour around who was still running Windows XP to show him what the Dashboard Widget screen looked like and how you could bring up pretty widgets on the screen. I can't remember any of them I actually used but it was nice to know they were there.

Naturally I had to show off the spotlight feature that indexes and searches all of your files and displays them in a list. Unfortunately, I hadn't created any files so the matches weren't particularly exhaustive.

I then made my very first film using iMovie. The footage I took was pretty crap (I must have been slightly rat-faced when I took them) but thanks to the gorgeous templates, Ken burns effects and pretty music, I managed to produce my first ever movie masterpiece. It never reached the box office and neither can I remember anyone who actually watched it. But it was nice to know that I had my own movie recording studio - it made me feel rather smug.

I hate Apple. I always did and always will. People can talk all they want about their computers, cell phones, and tablets being better quality at what they do, but they can't do what MIcrosoft computers can. It is also a total lie that Macs are more user-friendly. They are very unfriendly. Mac fans say users only gain, not lose, features when they switch from Windows to Mac. That's baloney. I lost features I need and only gained one that helps me do more on it: louder sounds through the speakers.

I am complaining about this here because people without depression do not understand having a computer I hate makes my life worse. I know I should be thankful just to have ab computer, but nothing prevents me from thinking, "I wish I still had Wndows," or something like that if all I want to do is something that is impossible on my iMac.
First World Problem man. You have a better computer than I do. You have a better computer than most people in this world. You bought something and regret it, it's lesson of life man. So tell me. Are you gonna cry about something you shouldn't even cry about in the past? Or will you learn from your mistake and get a windows computer? The Notre Dame Cathedral, a 1000 year old cathedral with so much history and treasures, burned down today which included the crown of thrones that Jesus wore 2000 years old. And you're crying that you chose yourself to buy a Mac?

I hate iPhones, but I have two macbook pros and a mac pro (super fast hackintosh). What can windows do that mac can't? I'd say nothing.

If you want to get into computer problems, Windows needs to be reinstalled often because it breaks all the time. Also Windows 10 is junk compared to windows 7, but they both break and need to be reinstalled at least once a year.

I hate iPhones too. My mom has a Mac Book Pro because she needs a laptop. She cannot understand why the features I lost by switching from Windows are such a big deal.

Windows can/Mac cannot:
  1. Copy and edit images stored in my Photos folder. All I can do is open and tag them on Mac. This is a HUGE issue for me because I could do EVERYTHING with them on Windows computers.
  2. Show me the first picture in each picture folder before I open it. That was VERY helpful.
  3. Scroll down webpages with clicks. Apple computers do not have up and down buttons at the top and bottom of scrollbars, which I used exclusively for scrolling on EVERY Windows computer.
  4. Adjust the scrollbar width. Window computers have wide scrollbars, which are much better for me.
  5. Let me work without annoying banner messages that never go away. In the top right corner, I see a dialog box that requies me to click on either Close or Details to make it disappear. If I click on Close it comes back the next day. Wndows just gave me an icon with a message for several seconds to let me know an update is ready to install. This problem required taking it to Best Buy, who shipped it off to Apple for a new motherboard. I did not have it for 3 weeks just because I clicked on Install.

I don't understand the continual citing of a command line problem in Linux. I think maybe most who raise the objection have experiences from several years ago. Nowadays almost everything has a GUI front end. I recommend using a distro based on Debian for that reason, because the .deb installation packages for various apps are near-universal (as are .rpm packages). On Linux I hardly used the command line more than when on Windows, and usually it's by preference (though when on Windows I'm usually setting things up or repairing, so my experience is probably skewed).

Honestly, Linux is still not quite as smooth as Windows, but it's pretty close, and it's stability, updating, and resource usage is famous.

That's a good point. I have a fantastic recycling center near me, and recently they stopped taking electronics for recycling. They will only take them with general trash. I'm not sure why, perhaps the tariff wars are the problem. But a lot of toxic waste is going to be going into the ground. There needs to be a better way to deal with obsolete equipment.

You obviously missed the part about my mom buying it. Also, I am a woman.

I have been praying for a new computer because the last one I had got stolen. Life may not always seem fair but may God teach us to forsake getting frustrated over technology or anything man-made. I have had to adjust my focus away from what I don't have to being thankful for the little.
I'd say, sell the iMac and purchase something more functional.

I just got this thing in June last year. Would you believe it already stopped working after only 6 months?
How long is the warranty?
If it's expired, I'd say sorry and count your losses. Then move on. Don't let it get to you dear. It could have been worse but it isn't. Your life is intact and so are those you love. Praise God for that

One of the reasons I will never buy an "all in one" computer system. I have a traditional tower, separate monitor and peripherals. If one of them breaks, I can easily repair it myself or get it replaced at a much lower cost. Also, as I use an open source operating system, I can simply use the USB key and get a working system running in about ten minutes.

It was still under Best Buy's warranty at the time. Now it is under Apple Care for 3 years.

I agree. We used Fedora (and, later, Debian) and it was a bit surprising how easy it was use to for the type of admin stuff we had to do. I believe the company had its own tools it used for the shell but it was still amazingly easy once you got used to it.
Fedora is amazing, especially when you have the RPMFusion repos enabled. I had it running on my machine for a good couple of years. Took a bit of initial tweaking but ran without a glitch. It's a good compromise between system stability and software which is cutting edge. It is very much a Gnome-centric distro which is a problem for my latest hardware as Gnome tends to use a lot of RAM and has a lot of memory leaks. I've moved to Manjaro which is built on Arch - also very stable, cutting edge and with a huge user repository (AUR). It gives me something to tinker around with. I'm a nurse so don't do IT as a job, just as a hobby!

I have an HP notebook that was only about $200 brand new from Office Depot. If you have the money or the means to save do so and get a windows operating computer.

Also to address your Mac problem have you tried one of the following:
Returning it for your money back
Or
Getting a windows operating system for your Mac I’ve heard of people actually doing this with their macs.
Let me know if any of this helps

Macs are HORRIBLE. There are still some snobby people who think they are top of the line, but the Mac business doesn't do well compared to PCs in general. I only used a Mac one at someones house like 15 years ago, never went back to it. Just like the other "I" products aren't that great. I love my android phones, always will.

That said don't beat yourself up about it. Just get a regular Windows PC when you have the money.

My macbooks are 2012 models, theones that you can take apart. My mac pro is a hackintosh and so it's a full size machine with dual boot.

I agree that the new macbook's are junk and built under the guise of planned obsolescence.
"Planned obsolescence".
It's actually kind of sad to see how people jump on the latest iPhones, even paying extra for special colors and everything, and then maybe a year later it's already "old" and they're completely bored with it and trading it in for something "better".

My co-worker got the latest iPhone and was proudly showing it off to everyone and all its special features and great camera, and literally a month later Apple said support for that version was going to being discontinued soon... Meanwhile, I have a beat up Android and it suits me perfectly fine. ^_^
