It's pointless if you think understanding how the universe works is pointless. That's your value judgment, not mine. The reasons that nations fund particle physics -- and space exploration, and deep sky astronomy, and lots of other things -- include genuine interest on the part of lots of people and national pride. Poetry, painting, sculpture, drama, national parks, museums -- none of these have practical value either, you know.So you're admitting the whole undertaking is pointless. It's nothing more than an intellectual curiosity that yields nothing worthwhile outside the purely theoretical?
Robert Wilson's justification to Congress on how building Fermilab would strengthen the defense of the US: "It has nothing to do directly with defending our country except to help make it worth defending."
