In Matthew 23:33, Jesus brings up the word "gehenna" and tells those Jewish religious leaders they are heading there. My question is, could the gehenna in this verse be the same as the "Lake of Fire" in Revelation?
Discuss.............

Matthew 23:33
'Serpents! brood of vipers!
how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?

In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, it shows the rich man burning in a flame and calling out to Abraham, with Lazarus in his bosom.
[This "COVENANTLE" parable is actually my largest study of the Bible]

Lazarus and the Rich Man - Here a little, there a little - Commentary

Afterward, speaking primarily to his disciples but with the Pharisees (and probably the crowd) still listening in, Yeshua related the parable of the unjust steward (Luke 16:1-13).
The Pharisees, who were "lovers of money" (Luke 16:14), realized that the Messiah was alluding to them with this parable and took offense. They scoffed at Yeshua. The final part of his response to the derision of the Pharisees and scribes was the parable of Lazarus and the rich man.

LUKE 16:24
24 "Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham[NC Faith/Life?]! have mercy on me! and send Lazarus[Resurrection]! that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue;
for I am[OC Law/Death?] tormented in this flame.' "

If the Pharisees and scribes understood Yeshua's prophetic parable, it must have astonished and infuriated them. How could the Jews become alienated from God while the elect Gentiles became the "seed of Abraham"?
The implication that the House of Judah and those called from the Gentile nations were to change places would have been almost impossible for the Pharisees and scribes to believe...................
While the significance of this seemingly pointless detail has been neglected by scholars throughout the centuries, you can be certain that it did not escape the notice of the Pharisees and scribes to which Yeshua was speaking. They thoroughly knew their history and were extremely proud of their heritage.
Yeshua wanted those self-righteous Pharisees to know exactly who he was referring to with this parable.
This detail cements the identity of the rich man as the House of Judah, the Jews

In Revelation, both a people and a great City are shown with smoke burning:

Revelation 14:11
And the Smoke of the tormenting of Them is ascending into Ages to-Ages.......

It seems those ones in Matthew 23:33 and Revelation 14:1 are also part of the great Harlot in Revelation 19:3

Revelation 19:3
And a second-time they have declared "allelouia and the Smoke of Her is ascending into the Ages of the Ages".

Either way, it's made of fire, and called the second death (the polar opposite of life), and fire inherently, naturally destroys and consumes, especially where God's method of punishment is said to have been used against men throughout Scripture (the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, the soldiers who came to confront Elijah and drag him before Ahaziah, etc.). I know some Christians really, really seem to want it to be different in the "afterlife" and the fire of God instead preserve their enemies in pain forever, but there's just not enough evidence in the Bible to support that little theory, however popular it might be in the pulpit.

More importantly, what you say here in italics is what I came to believe was the core message of this parable, that Gentiles are as welcome by God the Father through the Gospel as the Jews are. Simply being of Abraham's blood does not make you righteous and favored before Him above other nations and races. I think it misses the point entirely to believe that the purpose of this story is to tell us what Heaven and Hell are like.

Good post and thanks.
I believe the core message is also the Resurrection.

As important as Lazarus is, he is mentioned in only 3 chapters of the entire NT,
Luke 16 and John 11 and 12.

Jesus raises him after him being dead more than 3 days [which is ironically similar to the 2 witnesses in Revelation 11 being raised after 3 days,] and in John 12 it shows the corrupt murderous Jewish rulers plotting his death............

Lazarus (NKJV)
"lazarus" occurs 15 times in 15 verses

John 12:
9 Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus' sake only,
but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.
10 But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also

Lazarus and the Rich Man - Here a little, there a little - Commentary

LUKE 16:
30 "And he said, 'Nay! father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.'
31 But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.' "

Yeshua uses the last two verses of this parable as an amazing prophecy of his pending resurrection from the dead.
The rich man says that although his brothers may not accept the scriptural evidence for the identity of the Messiah, they will accept the evidence of one who is raised from the dead.
But Abraham answers and plainly tells him that anyone who rejects the Bible's teaching about the Messiah will also refuse to acknowledge the evidence of a miraculous resurrection.
This last verse is a sad prophecy about the Jews who, despite God's resurrection of His son from the power of the grave, have failed to recognize Yeshua as the prophesied Messiah.

Yeshua ends this parable abruptly, with no real resolution presented. The picture presented is a bleak one, yet there is hope for the Jews and for all Israel. In Romans 11, Paul laid out that hope in such a manner that scarcely few today have really believed it.

I like to do phrase searches and one thing that astonished me about the parable was how many verses in the NT have the word "purple and fine linen" used together.

purple fine linen (NKJV)
purple fine linen "purple" AND "fine" AND "linen"
occurs 103 times in 34 verses.
Out of the 34 verses that use those 2 words together, only 3 verses in the NT use those words together:

Lazarus and the Rich Man - Here a little, there a little - Commentary

Luke 16:19
“There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.

We begin by scrutinizing the description Yeshua gives us of the rich man. First, he tells us that this man was clothed in purple and fine linen. This type of clothing would not have been out of the ordinary for one of considerable wealth during this time period. However, this attire also has symbolic meaning. The Eerdmans Bible Dictionary says: "The wearing of purple was associated particularly with royalty . . ." (p. 863, "Purple"). In addition, the New Bible Dictionary tells us: "The use of linen in OT times was prescribed for priests (Ex. 28:39).
The coat, turban and girdle must be of fine linen." (p. 702, "Linen").
Verse 19 also tells us that the rich man "fared sumptuously every day." Figuratively, this represents the magnificent spiritual feast available only to the Jews, who were the sole remaining part of God's called people, Israel. In the 1st century CE, they were the only people on earth who had the true religion.

1 Peter 4:12
Beloved, think it not strange at the firery<4451> toward trial<3986> to ye becoming, as if a strange-thing<3581> to ye befalling,

She who sits as a Queen and not a widow:

Revelation 18:
9 The kings of the land, who committed sexual immorality and lived wantonly with her, will weep and wail over Her, when they look at the smoke of the firing<4451> of Her
12 “merchandise of gold and silver, precious stones and pearls, fine linen and purple, silk and scarlet, every kind of citron wood, every kind of object of ivory, every kind of object of most precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble
16 “and saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great City that was clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet,
18 and were crying, seeing the smoke of the firing<4451>of Her saying,
"What City is like to the great City"?

Solomon's Temple:

2 Chronocles 2:
12 Hiram[fn] also said:
Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who made heaven and earth, for He has given King David a wise son, endowed with prudence and understanding, who will build a temple for the LORD and a royal house for himself!
14 (the son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man of Tyre), skilled to work in gold and silver, bronze and iron, stone and wood, purple and blue, fine linen and crimson,
and to make any engraving and to accomplish any plan which may be given to him, with your skillful men and with the skillful men of my lord David your father.
15 Now therefore, the wheat, the barley, the oil, and the wine which my lord has spoken of, let him send to his servants. [Revelation 6:6]
16 And we will cut wood from Lebanon, as much as you need; we will bring it to you in rafts by sea to Joppa, and you will carry it up to Jerusalem.

Revelation 6:6
And I hear a voice in midst of the four living-ones saying:
"choinex of wheat a denari and three choinex of barleys a denari,
and the oil and the wine no you should be injuring".

Notice what Jesus didn't say in Matthew 23. Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of 70 AD? He instead said---Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Matthew 23:35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

None of these were around during Abel's day. So why would Jesus need to use 70 AD in order to fulfill verse 35? They couldn't live forever, they had to die at some point, regardless. And the damnation of hell speaks of judgment day. Judgment day wasn't in 70 AD, judgment day is still in the future.

And these that Jesus was speaking to at the time, what if some of them had already died before 70 AD, or that some of them died during 70 AD and some didn't? How do you apply the events having to do with 70 AD to these?

Revelation 18:2 is mentioned in Jeremiah 5:1-27:

Revelation 18:2
And he cried mightily[fn] with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen,
and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! [Jeremiah 5:27]

Here he is told to run thru the streets of Jerusalem to find just one just and honest Jew/man:

Jeremiah 5:
1 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem and see now and find out and seek in the broad places thereof,
if ye can find a man, if there be any that execute judgment, that seek the truth; and I will pardon the city.

26 For among my people were found wicked men: they lay in wait as he that sets snares; they set a trap of perdition to catch men.
27 As a cage full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit; thus they became great and rich..[Revelation 18:2]

In Ezekiel 22, Yahweh is shown gathering all the Jews/Judeans into the midst of Jerusalem, "a furnace of fire".

Ezekiel 22:
1 And there is a word of Yahweh unto me, saying, 2 ‘And thou, son of adam! dost thou judge? dost thou judge the City of blood? then thou hast caused it to know all its abominations,
17 And there is a word of Yahweh unto me, saying, ‘Son of adam!
18 The House of Israel hath been to Me for dross, All of them [are] brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, In the midst of a furnace — dross hath silver been,
19 Therefore, thus said Adonay Yahweh: Because of your all becoming dross, Therefore, behold!
I am gathering you unto the midst of Jerusalem,
20 A gathering of silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, Unto the midst of a furnaceto blow on it fire,
to melt it,
So do I gather in Mine anger and in My fury, And I have let rest, and have melted you.
21 And I have heaped you up, And blown on you in the fire of My wrath<5678>, And ye have been melted<5413> in its midst.
22 As the melting of silver in the midst of a furnace, So are ye melted in its midst, And ye have known that I, Yahweh, I have poured out My fury<2534> upon you.’

Could Revelation 18 be the fulfillment of Jeremiah 5 and Ezekiel 22:

Revelation 18:
9 The kings of the land, who committed sexual immorality and lived wantonly with her, will weep and wail over Her, when they look at the smoke of the firing<4451> of Her
18 and were crying, seeing the smoke of the firing<4451>of Her saying,
"What City is like to the great City"?

I believe Jesus is talking about Judea/Jerusalem in this verse:

Luke 12:49
I have come to ignite a fire<4442> on the land, and how I wish it were already kindled!

Revelation 8:7
The first Messenger trumpets:
And hail and fire<4442> followed, mingled with blood, and they were cast to the land,
And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

I have a poll thread here if anyone is interested in on voting and/or commenting on it.

Is the GREAT CITY in Revelation symbolizing the LAKE OF FIRE?

Jesus mentions Gehenna about 7 times and in every case He is referring to hell.
Thank you for both posting and voting.

Matt 23:15 shows an interesting word being used in conjunction with those rulers.
"going about the sea and dry............."

Matthew 23:
15 Woe to ye Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
That ye are going about the sea and the dry/xhran <3584> to make one proselyte, and whenever he may be becoming,
ye are making him a son of geennhV<1067> twofold-more of ye-selves
33 "Serpents! brood of vipers! how? ye may be fleeing from the judging of the geennhV <1067>

[Ezekiel 39:12/Reve 14:11]

Jesus also uses that word in conjunction with the coming 70ad wrath and destruction upon Jerusalem:

Luke 23
28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Bljavascript:void(null);essed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 3 0Then
“ ‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ b
31 That if in the moist wood these-things they are doing, in the dry/xhrw <3584>, what may be becoming?

Same word used for the Harvest in Reve 14:

Rev 14:15
And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, “Thrust in Your sickle and reap, for the time has come for You[fn] to reap, for the harvest of the land is ripe/dry<3583>.”

Matthew 21:19
And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it, “Let no fruit grow on you ever again.” Immediately the fig tree withered<3583> away.

Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke's Temple/Jerusalem Discourses harmonized

Matthew 24:32
And from the fig-tree learn ye the simile: When already its branch may have become tender, and the leaves it may put forth, ye know that summer<2330> [is] nigh,

The fire of Gehenna will never be quenched and destroys both body and soul. At judgment. Seems clear that Gehenna refers to the Lake of fire at final judgment.

I share that view also.
Torment is an interesting word and various forms of it is used in the NT.
2 of those in Revelation concerning the tormenting of a people and the other showing a great City being tormented. Interesting.

928. basanizo bas-an-id'-zo from 931; to torture:--pain, toil, torment, toss, vex.
929. basanismos bas-an-is-mos' from 928; torture:--torment.
930. basanistes bas-an-is-tace' from 928; a torturer:--tormentor.
931. basanos bas'-an-os perhaps remotely from the same as 939 (through the notion of going to the bottom); a touch-stone, i.e. (by analogy) torture:--torment.

Why is the Rich-Man in Luke 16:24 calling out to Abraham?

Luke 16:23
23 And in the hades, lifting up His eyes, existing in torments<931>,
he is seeing Abraham from afar, and Lazarus in the bosom of him.
24 "Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue;

for I am tormented<931> in this flame.' "

Revelation 14:

10 And he is drinking out of the wine of the fury of the God, of the having been blended undiluted in the drink cup of the wrath of Him
and he shall be being tormented<928> in fire and sulfur in sight of messengers, holy, and in sight of the lambkin.
11 And the smoke of the tormenting<929> of them is ascending into Ages to-Ages. And not they are having rest Day and Night

Revelation 18:10
from afar having stood because of the fear of Her torment,<929> saying, Woe, woe, the great City! Babylon, the strong city!
because in one hour did come thy judgment.

Kindgdom Bible Studies Savior of the World Series Part 1
TORMENTED IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LAMB

TORMENTED IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LAMB

The words torment, tormented, tormentors, and torments occur twenty-one times in the King James version, and all in the New Testament. Three of these are in connection with the lake of fire. Let me give you the quotations. "The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of His indignation; and he shall be TORMENTED WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE IN THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY ANGELS (MESSENGERS) AND IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LAMB: and the smoke of their torment ascends up for ever and ever (Greek: unto the ages of the ages): and they have no rest day nor night..." (Rev. 14:10-11). "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever (Greek: unto the ages of the ages - see Part One of this series -'Just What Do You Mean ... ETERNITY!')" (Rev. 20:10).

Notice please, in both instances, the subjects are tormented with fire and brimstone, and we have previously established what the fire and brimstone are. But Rev. 14:10 sheds further light, those are also tormented by and through another agency, which in reality sums up and constitutes the fire and brimstone, and that agency is THE PRESENCE OF THE LAMB and the holy angels, or messengers. What an amazing divine paradox!.............................

Ah, the torment comes not from the Lamb. The torment lies within the bosoms of the tormented. The Scripture does not say that the Lamb torments them! If you think it does, you are mistaken. It states that THEY ARE TORMENTED IN THE PRESENCE of the Lamb. What a thought! TORMENTED IN THE PRESENCE. The Lamb is merely present. He does not torment. The condition is within themselves.

Because they are wrong and sinful in nature, wicked in their hearts, selfish in their minds, and impure in their desires, they are CONDEMNED IN THEIR CONSCIENCES by the very PRESENCE of the pure, holy, sinless, selfless, sacrificing Lamb of God. Hell is at its fiercest when it sees heaven, and not till then. When these realize the presence, or the character of the Lamb, they are tortured in their consciences, for in the Light of the Lamb they see themselves for the wretched little devils they are. The very PRESENCE of TRUTH torments the deceitful and the liar.
The very PRESENCE of HOLINESS torments the immoral and corrupt. The very PRESENCE of LOVE is torment to the mean and hateful. The PRESENCE of Him who is the PRINCE OF PEACE is torture to those who live by violence and the sword. The very PRESENCE of the LIFE OF THE LAMB is the most awful torment and torture to all the opposing forces, both deceiver and deceived, until all the deceit and hostility has been taken out of them, and they come to KNOW THE LORD. When these have been exposed for a sufficient time to the PRESENCE of the Lamb, the Lamb will overcome them; His love and power will conquer their hearts; the rebellion and waywardness will be taken from them and they will at last ENJOY the Presence of the Lamb!............................

God often times mentions fire a a purifier refiner........

Jer 9:7

Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts:
“Behold, I will refine them and try them;
For how shall I deal with the daughter of My people?

Dan 11:35
“And some of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purify them, and make them white, until the time of the end; because it is still for the appointed time.

Zec 13:9
I will bring the one-third through the fire,
Will refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gold is tested.
They will call on My name, And I will answer them.
I will say, ‘This is My people'; And each one will say, ‘The LORD is my God.' ”

Ezekiel 22:
17 And there is a word of Yahweh unto me, saying, ‘Son of adam!18 The House of Israel hath been to Me for dross, All of them [are] brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, In the midst of a furnace — dross hath silver been,
19 Therefore, thus said Adonay Yahweh: Because of your all becoming dross, Therefore, behold!
I am gathering you unto the midst of Jerusalem,
20 A gathering of silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, Unto the midst of a furnaceto blow on it fire, to melt it, So do I gather in Mine anger and in My fury, And I have let rest, and have melted you.

Mal 3:3
He will sit as a refiner
and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,

Mat 13:42
“and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

This Valley of Slaughter mentioned in Jeremiah also appears to be symbolizing the location of "gehenna" as shown in these commentaries.

Bible Map: Valley of Slaughter (Valley of Hinnom)

It was near the walls of Jerusalem, "by the entry of the gate Harsith" (Jeremiah 19:2); the Valley Gate opened into it (Nehemiah 2:13; Nehemiah 3:13). The boundary between Judah and Benjamin ran along it (Joshua 15:8; Joshua 18:16).

See GEHENNA.
2. Situation:
The Valley of Hinnom has been located by different writers in each of the three great valleys of Jerusalem. in favor of the eastern or Kidron valley we have the facts that Eusebius and Jerome (Onom) place "Gehennom" under the eastern wall of Jerusalem and the Moslem geographical writers, and the Moslem geographical writers, Muqaddasi and Nasir-i-khusran, call the Kidron valley Wady Jahamum.
The Jewish writer Kimchi also identifies the Valley of Jehoshaphat (i.e. the Kidron) with Hinnom.

“that this place shall no more be called Tophet or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. ["Gehenna"?]

In Romans 11, Paul laid out that hope in such a manner that scarcely few today have really believed it.

,

Lazarus is the Hellenised name of the Hebrew Eleazar.
Meaning, origin and history of the name Eleazar

Eleazar was Abraham's servant's name, among others. (Gen 15:2)
Topical Bible: Eliezer: Abraham's Servant

Eliezer - Wikipedia

So this also explains the rich man asking Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his brothers.

Plus, the fact that there are references in this story to 'the Bosom of Abraham' and other descriptions of the underworld without scriptural precedent, suggests that Jesus was drawing on the oral tradition. Makes sense as he's giving the Pharisees a taste of their own medicine.

So it's Jesus telling the proud rich Pharisee that the gentile suffering servant will be united with Abraham and inherit ahead of the rich man.

The rich man will need to wait and suffer until the GWTJ where Hades gives up its dead (Rev 20:9), then to undergo the destructive testing of the lake of fire before he can inherit. I believe only then he'll be able to overcome, be regenerated in Christ and reconcile with Lazarus in all humility and contrition.

Branch B grafted in and branch A thrown into fire.
