I agree. And it is not common that I agree with an evangelical.

I concur.

There are many who, according to what they speak on, etc. apparently do not even read the Bible or delve into it.

Agree for the most part.

What happens in charismatic and Pentecostal meetings is not a gift from God. It's a skill learned by listening and imitating. It is just a practise. No more a spiritual gift than is whispering during the sermon.

I would mainly agree but not fully. There may be one actually speaking in tongues. I'm just not willing to call them all liars.

We share a peeve.

I cannot tell you how many "preachers" i've written off as "spinning stories" rather than being saturated with God's Word, and thus His wisdom and discernment, and speaking from THAT vantage point.

If they do not, they are literally "starving" the sheep and giving the equivalent of "cotton candy" to a starving soul in need of God's nutrients, found in His Word.

They need not be liars. They imitate and part of imitating is believing it is all God's doing by means of a gift from the Holy Spirit. Maybe some people believe that they whisper during the sermon by means of a spiritual gift - not many would believe that but some may despite there being no "gift of whispering during the sermon" mentioned in the scriptures.

For me I don't know the man..never heard of him. For me its no different then all speaking here. Its just their personal view feeling thoughts. Still all these years later we have "I wont believe unless I see it".. not faith.. no faith. With out faith we can never please God. Faith is not something we see feel hear.

Jesus went into some town and marveled at there doubt. Could only lay hands on some sick. Could do no might work.. then goes on to teach. What do you see at your Church or bible study? Hmm Now I cant find since Jesus left where that which is perfect has come. So.. nothing has stopped. We have to back up.. all this one HAS to have faith. You believe John 3:16-17 yes? So why does one not believe act on ask what He again said in Luke 11:13? Got to wonder how they made it back them yes? Well they didnt have the NT to argue disagree on. It was just asked.. have you received the holy Spirit since you believed?

Is what happen to me. And exactly what happen in the the word happen to me. I asked..they prayed. They stopped said you got it. I get up go to sit down and it came out. And I would have to lie to say the gifts are dead or gone. 1st time I seen something was with me. I had in that same bible study asked for them being him and his wife both grand parents and she prayed 4hours a day. I had this big wart inside my hand. Well he started to pray then just before he was done said something that shocked me "and lord for the warts between his toes" HUH? How in the WORLD did he know? yeah.. I had them between my toes. He said the lord show'd him.

One time alone in my house I was praying. I said lord show me what I have to do to be more like you. Well a week or two later in that bible study as we were praising the lord.. she says "Danny I dont know what this means but the lord says "I will show you what you have to do". I remember praying by a tree alone saying "I know you called me but I dont know to what." Then in Church that night this man which was praying for another choir member lays hands on me and said "my son I have called you but you dont know to what I will open all the doors.. you have great faith..." I then went to my pastor and asked about that man. Even thought I KNEW it was God. I still asked.

Now.. NOT HERE to boast. I can keep going. This is JUST the start. JESUS IS REAL! The gifts.. man stand in the back of our Church woman blind.. blind.. you know cant see? The man lays hands on and says in JESUS name.. she screams shouts crying.. seems she got her sight. My best friend came over one night asking for prayer (for those that know.. that then gave the Father the right to tell me things). So my friend Jeff starts to tell me the bad things he was in to.. as selling him self to other guys. The lord then out of no where says " I warned him three times". So I said.. the lord warned you three times. He said...you know.. everytime I turned on TV it was about GOD.. turned on the radio and it was GOD.. so forth.

Sorry I went on so long. I have not seen things heard what ever because I am so HOLY. praise GOD I am not. To my Father I am through Christ but.. I ASK MAN but in the then.. Jesus is in me the sweet sweet Holy Spirit is IN ME. So I ask Him.. HE shows ..tells me and ALWAYS backs it up by the word. It HAS to be written. This started when I was 13 or so. His word just.. would pop out.. I just believe what HE said. I dont believe what some man/woman said. Its HIS word. He cant lie.

Ask HIM..He is in YOU.. man PLEASE GOD FORBID..dont wait till something you cant handle to then try to pray and ask and believe. Work your faith.. start in small things. You ARE your Fathers child. Your NO GOD..but like Him.. what did HE promise you? over 7k promises in His word. Tongues? You dont believe? Praise GOD.. JESUS IS LORD yes?

We share a peeve.

To me it is more than a peeve. It is a serious problem and is why the "church" is in the state it is in with building full of the un-discerning and biblical illiterates.

Odd that such is rare in.pentecostal churches. Usually the interpretation exalted the pastor or another member of that church.
I never heard anything exalt a pastor or a member of the church in a Pentecostal church. In all denominations churches and pastors can vary a lot, not to mention what congregants tell each other. We're only human.

For me, speaking in tongues was done by the Apostles to spread the Gospel to all nations, where, they could hear it in their very own 'Language'.

What we hear today is babbling. I don't believe it is from God.

I also believe that! Tongues (languages) was needed when people from many lands came together. Most sound Bible teachers show that; and the "babel" (meaning "noise and confusion") with some religious souls, is deceit of Satan to get one to even utter things unaware as offensive to God. Some people don't want to (or can't) speak to God rightly, so just say: "God will lead and make it into praise" ---nonsense!

Exactly.

The lack of discernment continues to floor me.

The enamoration of ANYTHING but the living God is prominent.

Listen closely to WHAT is being spoken of.

It's me-me-me.

With a pronounced absence of anything having to do with the living God.

I say, put a gong in that church, so when that happens.....gong 'em!

1Colossians 13:1
If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love,
I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

I love The Gong Show.
There is a new version of The Gong Show out look for it in your schedules.

That Red Robin skit above was an excellent one. Some just don't recognize Talent when they see it.

Whatever "speaking in tongues" was, it disappeared from the church a very long time ago. There are no accounts of it anywhere in the history of the church.

Tongue speaking does die out early on, but there is record of it among the Montanists with Tertullian.

There have been groups here and there, the Montanists as you mentioned, that have gone out on their own to form some "charismatic" group or another. The Jumpers of Russia and the Pentecostals of the US are no different. Notice that the Montanists did not survive history and I believe these other groups will not either.

But in the entirety of the unbroken chain of commentaries in the history of the Church, there is no mention of "tongues".

The Montanists were not accepted by the Church. But Tertullian was a Montanist! Not a small fry!
