I lived my life as an Agnostic, exploring other faiths. I have found myself wanting to commit to Christianity and am starting to believe in the story of Jesus Christ. I had tried in the past, but something is different this time around. For the first time ever, I completed one of the Gospels. I ‘ve never read one of the books in full before, so I know that I am making an effort now to try and learn. I still have occasional doubts and would appreciate any help on how to really solidify my faith?

But also... I am here to ask for advice on how to stop sinning. My sinning relates mostly to lust and gluttony. I have certain addictions to light drugs that I am finding very hard to have control over... these being cannabis and alcohol. I also have experimented with psychedelics in the past but no longer use them. Ironically they had a very profound effect on my life, in a positive way, and are actually what led me to Christianity.

Welcome to the faith friend! It's a life long journey, and you'll experience many victories in the Lord and also many valleys as the Lord tests and forges you. Don't ever lose heart as God will always be with you through Jesus Christ.

Also, ceasing from sin altogether is a life-long process called "sanctification" and will be the most difficult thing you've ever undergone, but God promises to complete his good-work he's started in you (Philippians 1:6). Those temptations and lusts will eventually get phased out over time and you'll be given the strength through the Spirit to overcome them as God builds your fortitude and faith.

Always remember, prayer and God's word are the most valuable tools to the Christian life - forsake neither of them, and you'll do well the rest of your life, no matter how bad things may seem to be.

God bless and I hope that you find many ways of growing in the Lord here by interacting with the plethora of brilliant saints that are active here.

We don't reckon to give a lot of advice here - well a thread could develop into a really, really, really long one.

How about starting a post here - Christian Advice https://www.christianforums.com/forums/christian-advice.232/

or here - For New Christians https://www.christianforums.com/forums/for-new-christians.43/

In either place you would be able to get a really good 'chat' going which could prove more helpful than here

Welcome to the Kingdom of God and to the Family of God. Trust God, He will cleanse you of your sinning if you confess it.
1John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

I stopped smoking marijuana in 1981. I stopped because it was a waste of time, money and was illegal. I have not used marijuana for about 37 years. It is a carcinogenic neurotoxin. It is not healthy. I was in my girlfriend's room. I read a story from her book case about someone who found God. I started to read the Bible. In 1982 I stopped smoking cigarettes. I attended AA meetings. I did not drink alcohol for years. I became celibate in 1982 after I read Proverbs 7. This proverb warned me to avoid the house of the adulteress. I broke up with my girl friend after told me she did not want to get married. In 1982 I was 22. I had no car. I started walking the Appalachian Trail from one state into another and bummed rides and walked after than. I did not return to my old neighborhood where I had partied and squandered my money. I was never obese. Christians and charities helped me along the way. After I found full time permanent work, I did not need charity. My parents got rich and gave me generous gifts. That gave me an added advantage. One day I thanked God for all that has been done for me.

You might continue to study the Gospels, Acts and the Epistles.
Some churches helped.

You have to be willing to turn your will and your life over to God in order to be made whole.

As a new Christian your doubts, concerns and fears are normal. Your like Neo from the Matrix, just waking up from a long sleep. As you feed your personal relationship with Christ your faith will grow stronger and stronger. As He makes Himself known to you, you will see and understand things in a whole new light. As He makes you to understand what your salvation in Christ consists of. That when “Christ died you died”. This is the way of walking a victorious Christian life. By reckoning oneself “dead unto sin but alive unto God”. It is this truth understood from the heart that sets a believer free from the old man and his deeds. Keep pressing into Christ and all these things will be showed you. Blessings to you, and may you grow in the faith, and your love of God, righteousness and all good things.

Much love in Christ, Not me

Hi newlyconverted101 & welcome to CF!

In hopes of helping you solidify your faith, following is an explanation of our need for salvation and God's plan of salvation.

Mankind’s Need of Salvation
What do I need to be saved from?
The wrath of God. (Romans 2:5-6)

Why do I need to be saved?
Your sin has cut you off from God. (Isaiah 59:2) To sin, means to “miss the mark.” The Bible declares, “all have sinned; all fall short of God’s standard.” (Romans 3:23)

What is God’s standard?
To perfectly keep His Law, the Ten Commandments, for your entire life. Keep all of the Law and God will let you enter Heaven. Have you ever:
  • used God’s name as a curse word? _____Yes _____No
  • stolen anything? _____ Yes _____No
  • told a lie? _____Yes _____No
This is just three of the ten. Answer yes to any? Uh-huh! You are guilty of breaking God’s Law. You have sinned. The “wages (penalty) of sin is (physical & spiritual) death.” (Romans 6:23)

If you die, without being saved, you will be eternally separated from God and your loved ones. After death, life does go on, either in Heaven (with God) or in Hell (away from God), depending on your acceptance or rejection of God’s plan of salvation.

God’s Plan of Salvation
The Futility of Human Effort
The Bible teaches that no amount of human goodness, human works, human morality or religious activity can get anyone into Heaven. Being a good person, belonging to a religious family, being baptized, going to church, none of these can save anyone. Everyone still falls short of God’s perfect standard. (Isaiah 64:6, Romans 4:1-5, Ephesians 2:8-9, Titus 3:5-7)

The Only Way
Jesus said to him, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) me.” (John 14:6)

What must I do to be saved?
1) Realize that you’re are a sinner. (Romans 3:23, 5:12; 1 John 1:10)
2) Change your mind about Jesus (repent).
  • Jesus said: “…unless you repent (have a change of mind that results in a change of action), you will all perish and be lost eternally. (Luke 13:5)
  • …now God charges all people everywhere to repent. (Acts 17:30)
3) Believe that Jesus Christ died for you, was buried and rose from the dead.
  • We are made right in God’s sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in the same way, no matter who we are or what we have done. For God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God’s anger (wrath) against us. We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus shed His blood, sacrificing His Life for us. (Romans 3:22, 25)
  • For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)
4) Go to God in prayer, confessing Jesus as Lord and your need for forgiveness of your sins. Give your life to Jesus, making Him the Lord of your life.
  • For it is believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. (Romans 10:10)
  • For anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.(Romans 10:13)
What should I pray?
Following is an example:

Dear God,

I know I am a sinner. I have broken your Law and deserve to pay the penalty for my sins, which is eternal separation from you. God, I need your forgiveness. I believe that your Son, Jesus the Christ, is Lord of all, that He shed His precious blood as payment for my sins and that, on the third day, You raised Him from the dead. I am willing to turn from sin. Jesus, please come into my heart, to be the Lord and Savior of my life. Live your life through me. In Jesus Christ name, Amen.
If you sincerely prayed this prayer, you are now saved and the newest member of God’s family. But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn! (John 1:12-13)

Your acceptance or rejection of Jesus is the most important decision you will make in this life. It is a matter of eternal life and eternal death.

I accepted God’s plan of salvation, what next?
Here is a good place to start: http://www.bible-truth.org/NewConvertpage.html

Anyone who has not followed God's plan of salvation cannot stop sinning. They are a slave to sin (Romans 6:6, 20). For a greater explanation of this, click here~~~> www.gotquestions.org/slave-to-sin.html .

So first, one needs to be saved before they even have a chance to stop sinning. Then, here is an explanation of how to go about doing it~~~> www.gotquestions.org/stop-sinning.html .

Now that you have a taste of Jesus I would encourage you to seek Him earnestly. He accepts us as we are and it is He through the Holy Spirit who will help you kick those habits. He works in our hearts and you slowly just lose the love of and the taste for what is not good for you in His eyes. We have the only living savior and living Word of God.

Yes, the Lord can turn bad things into good things (relating to your drugs). I'd read the entire Bible. And stay away from lust, drugs, and gluttony. A little alcohol is okay, though I don't advise it.

Hey man, it all starts with the New Covenant and Grace!!
Jesus teaches us how to overcome our sins especially our addictions. Jesus delivered me from inappropriate contentography, masturbation, lust, anger, doubt and a bunch of other things I was physically and emotionally bound to. I had to ask Him for wisdom as James says we are to do if we need it in times of temptation. Through obeying Jesus I overcame, church, people, studying the Bible, although all these things did help encourage me, it was directly Jesus, the Word of God who destroyed the sins out of my life through His Words and simply me believing and submitting.

With what I summarized above, my testimony is long but you can hear it here:

As for learning how to hear Jesus and learn from Grace which saves us I explain what I learned from my testimony here in a faster more condensed manner:

Be encouraged, we can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens us, this includes stop sinning.
