  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No one should be forced to participate in a wedding which violates the tenets of his faith. That's inhibiting freedom of religion, which should be an exception to civil rights laws. I'm unsure how the restaurant owner is protected by civil rights law. Otherwise, anyone can refuse service for any reason, which he can't.

Hi HIS,

Would you read my posts first before you respond. You keep coming back to argue exactly what I'm saying. I really don't need you to do that for me.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

I doubt anyone ever has. Because if anyone had, we would have heard about it.

They don't realize it yet, but this is a very, very, very, very, very bad week for the liberals. VERY bad.

Hi liza,

Gosh, if I didn't know better I'd think you were sock puppet account for President Trump. He says his denials in pretty much the same way.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

HI HIS,

You wrote:

Well, absent civil rights violations, under what circumstances do you think a business can refuse service? I always thought that a business could refuse service to whoever they wanted to so long as it wasn't an abridgment of a protected civil right. I mean, that's kind of why we have civil rights laws. A business can refuse service to anyone other than if the refusal can somehow be attached to a civil right abridgment.

That's why the baker wound up in court. He certainly had the right to refuse someone's business. However, if that refusal can be tied to a violation of one's civil rights, then he would have been in violation of the law. So, the gay couple tried to prove that his refusal to serve them was based on their sexual orientation. They didn't just go into court and say, "Hey, this guy refused to bake me a cake and I don't think he can do that." No!!! Not at all. They had to prove that his refusal to bake them a cake was tied to their sexual orientation.

Now, in reality, most businesses aren't in the habit of refusing service to people and so the issue comes up very rarely, but...

In this case service was refused based on the customers political leanings. As far as I know, there is no law that precludes a business from refusing service to anyone based on their political leanings. It isn't an issue that gets put out there, like it has in this case, very often. But you cannot sue a business for just not doing business with you. You have to be able to prove that the reason for their not doing business with you is for one of the protected rights.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

Hi HIS,

I'll let lisa fight her own battles with me. The truth of things is rarely beneath me. Yes, the way she responded with her very, very, very... and then repeated at the end 'very' again, can be seen in a lot of President Trump's denials or affirmations of what he believes.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

The reason they lash out in this manner is because they're losing a lot more than me and they know it. So they have nothing more than snarky replies.

Seriously, they refuse to cede on a Christian refusing to serve a gay wedding (and a gay wedding only) but can't see what's wrong--and in fact CELEBRATE--interrupting Sanders into her meal...just a meal. Deep down, they know this is wrong and hypocritical, but can't really address that. So they lash out.

Liza, who constitutes the "they"? Christians who have their eyes on Jesus & their lips aren't puckered up to Trump?

I'm not wading through that Reddit thread, but who is "the people"? Illegals? They already broke the law coming over our border without permission or clearance, just expecting entrance? HOw is that like Sarah Sanders? That doesn't even make any sense at all.

Lulz, Liza. It doesn't make any sense to you on account of how you've so badly misconstrued it. :tearsofjoy:

Well, in reading an article with more details about it, she already had been served cheese boards & wine when the owner politely asked her, just her, to leave. She said the cheese board & wine was on the house. The staff had seated Sarah & her party when they arrived. They contacted the owner, who then came, conferred with the staff & they came to a decision. She politely, privately explained to Sarah why she wanted her to leave.

I gotta say, I don't agree with them asking her to leave. If anything, only because this goes a long way to stroke the right's persecution complex as well as give the Trump administration a nifty little victim card they can play to gin up sympathy from their base.

FWIW, I don’t necessarily agree with the restaurateur’s actions, but the idea that the libs are the ones starting this divisiveness is laughable. I’ve been hearing anti-lib vitriol since I was kid. Many on the right have for decades espoused ideas that are ridiculous and downright horrible. Most people, however, weren’t really aware of them or at least of their implications. That’s changing, and folks are starting to expect better - just at the time that the right is letting the malicious crazies take over.

Fortunately, the demographics are shifting and folks are moving away from conservatism, even if it’s more slowly than I prefer.
You couldn't be more wrong... there is coming a moral awakening and a push for supposed religious values much to the detriment of many.... myself included.

Well, maybe don't include "God bless" or "In Christ" in your post if you're going to call someone a sock puppet. It's an awkward combination.

Imagine the awkwardness of the Pharisee's and Sadducee's being called a brood of vipers and a wicked generation in public... sometimes the truth hurts.

The difference being that the Pharisees didn't receive a blessing at the same time.
