  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. I suggest you read Proverbs 13:18 and then read the whole of the document before picking it apart line-by-line. But if you are going to pick it apart, pick apart every line and answer how the rest of the document refutes some of your statements with quotings from scripture and simple first truths.

I addressed the verses in the beginning of the post. At least you can do is reply to the first one or two paragraphs of what I had written with Scripture. Also, insults from Scripture are not helpful to prove your case here. Stick to the topic at hand please.

If you are going to preach that we must be perfect to be saved, then you must be perfect or you're not saved. This would mean you have never sinned and never will. Otherwise you need the blood of Christ to bring forgiveness. If it doesn't apply to us after we're saved, then one sin and we go to the lake of fire for all of eternity. I pray the Holy Spirit convicts you of whatever sin you are still committing as a Christian, even if it is only in that you deceive yourself by claiming to be without sin.

This principle is described most aptly in Romans 7:7-13.

In Romans 7:7-13, Paul is recounting Israelite history and speaking as a Jew throughout time with the coming in of the Law of Moses and what that was like.

How do we overcome sin?
By believing in the OSAS message that says we can sin and still be saved?

No.

Scripture says,
"But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof" (Romans 13:14).

"For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God."
(Romans 8:2-8).

I preach that we are saved unto perfection, not by it. That is accurate to the scriptures.

I do not believe that Sinless Perfection is the same thing as walking uprightly in the basics of God's Eternal Moral Laws (like do not murder, do not steal, do not covet, etc.). Sinless Perfection is putting away minor transgressions of faults out of your life that do not deal with salvation. 1 John 5:16-17 says there is a sin unto death and there is a sin not unto death. So not all sins lead to the Lake of Fire like the ones mentioned in Revelation 21:8.

If you say so. I believe I have just refuted this write up rather easily by pointing out the context. So any new readers who will come across this thread by chance who are seeking truth, will know it.

You addressed less than 5% of the whole. Sorry I didn't mean to insult you, it was meant as an admonishment, see Romans 15:14.

Alright. My apologies. You are right. But the author wrote a lot. I already pointed the error of misinterpretation of the beginning of the post and I was rather lengthy in doing so (so as to be fair to what the Scriptures really say). Now, you need to address what I said in return with Scripture. If not, then you are not even addressing 5% of what I said.

Actually, what you think the scriptures REALLY say is a misinterpretation. Just about every statement you make to refute the first few lines is refuted later by further things in the document.

On another note, the sin not unto death is all sin that has the blood applied to it. The sin unto death is anything not forgiven through the blood of Jesus Christ. So if you think that minor sins will not put you in the lake of fire, you are mistaken. Anything not forgiven will put you there, especially if you are trying to get to heaven on your own, by living a perfect life (which you cannot do apart from Christ).

Well, I skimmed what the author was saying and it is simply more of the same crazy thinking that is outside of Scripture. I addressed his thoughts on Scripture with Scripture in return for the beginning of his write up. I believe I have refuted what he said with Scripture. But now it is your turn to reply to what I said with Scripture. That is why we are on a Christian forum. We are here to discuss the truth of God's Word. If you do not want to do that, then that is your choice. But normally people come on these forums to discuss back and forth the truth of God's Word and it is not a one way street of information.

For someone who claims to be perfect, you really do have an attitude problem. You speak evil of things that you don't understand.

Not everyone is correct in what they believe.
There are many religions out there.
Have you never spoken ill of other religions or other beliefs you disagreed with?
I believe God saves us by His grace (Justification) and by us producing good fruit or obedience (Sanctification).
Do you believe that?
My guess is that would be a .... "no."
Now, have you ever spoken ill of those who believe they are saved by God's grace + works? If you have, I can say, "you speak evil of things that you don't understand", too.

Anyways, the key questions that should be asked here are:

"Does God's Word appear to be more in support of what I believe or what you believe?"

"Does reality (real world examples that supports God's goodness or morality) match up with your belief or my belief?"

So far I believe I have provided Scripture that refutes the author's thoughts.
Also, Eternal Security is a belief that you cannot make a real world example with. Remember, Jesus and even the Canaanite both made parables or real world examples to illustrate truth. This is something Eternal Security proponents can never do. Trust me, I asked them many times over the years and they have failed to give me a rational parable that mirrors the parables of Jesus.

In any event, good day to you, dear sir;
And may God's love shine upon you this fine day.

Now the wet paint principle of the law might take effect, if I begin to think that I am justified by the law. If I base my salvation on my performance rather than on the finished work of Christ on the Cross, then sin will take advantage of the law and I will sin in that thing wherein I base my salvation on my own obedience.

Scripture teaches that we are saved by God's grace + works and it is not exclusively one or the other alone (We are saved by God's grace: Ephesians 2:8-9, Titus 3:5. We are saved by works: Matthew 19:17, James 2:17-18, James 2:24, Titus 1:16, Hebrews 12:14).

For example: 1 John 1:7 says that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses of all sin if we walk in the light. If you were to compare 1 John 1:6-7 you will see similar wording used in 1 John 2:3-4. The words "walk in the light as He is in the light" is another way of saying "keeping God's commandment" and the word "darkness" is in reference to "not keeping his commandments" or "hating your brother."

6 "If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."
(1 John 1:6-7).

3 "And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him."
(1 John 2:3-4).

(a) If we say we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness (1:6) = He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments (2:4).

(b) We lie, and do not the truth (1:6) = is a liar, and the truth is not in him (2:4).

(c) If we walk in the light, as he [Christ] is in the light, we have fellowship with another, (1:7) = Hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

Anyways, I know what passage the author is referring to here. The author more than likely believes that Paul is talking about his struggle with sin as a Christian (See Romans 7:14-24). However, Paul is actually talking as a Pharisee (Before he became a Christian) who tried to obey a distorted version of God's laws that did not include Jesus or God's grace. The Pharisee religion was all about law and it did not include a Savior or His loving grace of forgiveness. So yes, it is true, if one seeks to follow a salvation system that is only works alone without God's grace, then one will always struggle in trying to keep God's laws. For one needs to get forgiven by God's grace and then the Lord will help the believer from there to obey God's commands.

In Romans 7:6, Paul says we should serve in newness of the spirit and not the oldness of the letter (Which is the Old Law and not the New Testament Scriptures that were still being formed). We are told to SERVE. How do we serve? Do we just do our own thing? No. We follow God's commands in the New Testament. This talk of the Old Law is the context of verses 14-24.

We are dead to the Law by the body of Jesus Christ (Romans 7:4). Would this be the Old Law or ALL law? 1 John 3:23 is a commandment that says we are to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. This is a New Covenant Law. So obviously we are not dead to this Law or Command. The Scriptures also say, "but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent." (Acts of the Apostles 17:30). Are we dead to this Law? Surely not. Jesus said "repent or perish." (Luke 13:3). Peter told Simon to repent (by way of prayer to God) of his wickedness of trying to pay for the gifts of the Holy Spirit so that he may be forgiven (Acts of the Apostles 8:22). Sin is merely transgression of the Law (1 John 3:4). All this lets us know that men of God can break God's laws and they can be separated from GOD because of it. So surely some kind of Law of God is still in effect and has dire consequences for any person's soul who commits them. For Jesus said that if we do not forgive, we will not be forgiven by the Father (Matthew 6:15). If Jesus was talking to unbelievers, this would not make any sense. They would first need to accept Christ. So the only logical conclusion is that Jesus is talking to believers in Matthew 6:15. You do not forgive (i.e. you sin or break this law of God) and you will not be forgiven or saved. 1 John 3:15 says if you hate your brother you are like a murderer and no murderer has eternal life abiding in them. Again, you hate your brother (which can be a one time act) and you do not have eternal life. It's that simple. Also, Paul condemns circumcision several times. Galatians 5:2 is the biggest verse that condemns circumcision salvationism. Circumcision is an Old Covenant Law and it is not a New Covenant Law. Paul uses the word "law" when he speaks against circumcision. So we have to conclude that Paul is saying we are dead to the Old Covenant Law and not all Law. So again, this talk of the Old Law plays into verses 14-24.

In addition, Romans 8:3-4 says,
3 "For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:3-4).

So which Law did God send His Son for so as to condemn sin in the flesh?
It was the Old Covenant Law.
For when Jesus died on the cross, the temple veil was ripped from top to bottom letting us know that the Old Testament laws were no longer valid because the Old Laws on the animal sacrifices and the priesthood were no longer acceptable.
Jesus Christ was now our Passover Lamb.
Jesus Christ was soon be our Heavenly High Priest (after He ascended to His father after His resurrection 3 days later) so He can be our mediator between God the Father and man.

Romans 8:4 says, "That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."

This is saying that the righteous part or aspect of the Old Law can be fulfilled in us.

Paul says elsewhere,
8 "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law."
(Romans 13:8-10).

So loving your neighbor is the righteousness of the Old Law!
We fulfill this law by walking after the Spirit and not after the flesh (i.e. sin).

So we see a consistent theme here. The word "law" used in general (with no actual description attached to it) is in reference to the Old Law in Romans 7 and Romans 8. This helps us to understand that Paul is telling us his past experience or life as a Pharisee in struggling to keep the Old Law unsuccessfully because he did not have Jesus Christ yet (in verses 14-24).

Furthermore, in Romans 8:2, we see the mention of how there are TWO laws. We also learn from this verse that keeping one of these Laws helps us to be set FREE from the other one.

In Romans 8:2, we see:

Law #1. - Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus.
This is a New Covenant Law that we are still under. What is this Law?
It is fulfilling the righteousness of the Law (i.e. to love your neighbor - Romans 13:8-10) by walking after the Spirit (See Romans 8:3-4).

Law #2. Sin and Death.
This is in reference to the Old Covenant Law as a whole (i.e. the 613 Old Testament Commands within the Torah). It is called the Law of Sin and Death because you could physically be put to death by not obeying this Law.

What is the relationship of these two laws in Romans 8:2?

Keeping the New Law helps us to be free of the Old Law.
For there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus who WALK not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (Romans 8:1).

But when I begin to understand that nothing can ever separate me from the love of God—not even my violation of the principle of the law

First, nowhere does God's Word ever say that we can disobey God's laws with that not separating us from the love of God. As another poster mentioned before, Jesus said if you love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15). Paul says if any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ let him be Anathema (accursed) (1 Corinthians 16:22). So if we are not loving Jesus the way Jesus desires us to love Him, we would be accursed according to the words of Paul (if you were to read Scripture as a whole).

Second, I recognize the passage the author is quoting. By the way, if I was writing an important major article to be published or circulated for many to see (and not just an obscure post on a forum), I would strive to make sure that the article had verse numbers included. Why? Because that way the reader can check the verse out for themselves (to confirm the truth). To me it looks like he has something to hide by not providing verse numbers every time, so that people can be good Bereans.

Anyways, the author is quoting from Romans 8:35-39:

35 "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
(Romans 8:35-39).

Please take note that all of the thing listed in Romans 8:35-39 are external things only. There is nothing said about how about "YOU" or "SIN" (VIOLATION of the LAW) is mentioned in that list. The author merely makes an assumption that Paul is talking about the violation of the Law (i.e. sin) is in the list within Romans 8:35-39 when it is not there. On the contrary, we know that if the author were to skip up and read the rest of the chapter, he would see words like:

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:1).
"to be carnally minded is death;" (Romans 8:6).
"they that are in the flesh cannot please God." (Romans 8:8).
"For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die:" (Romans 8:13).

When I begin to understand that I am that blessed man to whom the Lord will not impute sin—the wet paint principle is then dealt with because its power lies in the condemnation that the law brings to the one who is not counted as forever perfect in Christ.

The author is in part here quoting Romans 4:8 again. I believe I already addressed this verse before. But to make sure no stone is unturned here, Paul says elsewhere in Romans the following,

15 "What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?"
(Romans 6:15-16).

Paul says you are servants to whomever you obey.
John says he that commits sin is of the devil (1 John 3:8).
John says that all liars will have their part in the Lake of Fire (Revelation 21:8).
The Lake of Fire is called the "Second Death."
Paul alludes to this "Second Death" when he says, "whether of sin unto death."

Anyways, God will judge everyone according to their deeds.

5 "...God;
6 ...will render to every man according to his deeds:
7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;"
(Romans 2:5-12).

Anyways, again Romans 4:8 is talking about coming to the Lord Jesus Christ by faith and not in the way of the Jew or by circumcision (See Romans 3:1). Paul is saying that we are initially or ultimately saved by God's grace in Ephesians 2:8-9 and not works alone; However, works will follow because we are created unto Christ Jesus for good works. For God has before ordained that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10). Jesus says if you will enter into life, keep the commandments (Matthew 19:17).

The author also mentions the "Condemnation." (See my quote of the author in my recent post). However, the author is going off on a tangent with the "Condemnation" that the Bible does not really talk about. In other words, the author is not actually reading Scripture in regards to what the Bible says about the "Condemnation." Lets read God's Word to see what it says about it.

19 "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God."
(John 3:19-21).

Verse 19 says, the "Condemnation" is that the light has come into the world (i.e. Jesus) and men loved darkness rather than the light (i.e Jesus). Why? Because their deeds are evil.

Verse 20 says, for everyone who does evil hates the light (i.e. Jesus), and neither comes to the light (i.e. Jesus), unless their deeds should be reproved (by them repenting and asking Jesus to forgive them).

Okay. Let's stop right here. Verse 20 says anyone who does evil hates the light. So I see nothing about how a man of God can break God's commandments and say they love Jesus or God. It says that they are not even coming to the light if they are doing evil. UNLESS. UNLESS..... their evil deeds should be reproved by God's Word whereby they would then repent of their evil doing to the Lord.

Verse 21 says he that does truth, comes to the light and that his good deeds may be made manifest and that the are wrought in GOD (Meaning: The LORD will do the good work through them). For Jesus says you can do nothing without me (See John 15:5).

We also see opposite of the truth of the "Condemnation" being expressed in Romans 8:1, as well. For it says,

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:1).

It says there is no "Condemnation" to those who are in Christ Jesus. Many Eternal Security proponents I have talked with will stop right here and not add the rest of the verse. What the ENTIRE verse says is:

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:1).
Did you catch that?

It says there is no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus WHO WALK NOT AFTER THE FLESH, BUT AFTER THE SPIRIT.

Yet, the OSAS proponent will say that disobedience to God's commands there is no condemnation. In other words, they are saying the exact opposite of what God's Word teaches about the "Condemnation."

The wet paint principle has its effect because we begin to think that we are saved through our obedience and the Lord will not allow this to compete with the Cross as our means of salvation. So God will allow us to sin so that we will be driven to the Cross as the only remedy for sin.

This may be true with "Works Alone Salvationism" but it is not true after somebody accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior and believes in His death and resurrection on their behalf. God is not in a competition with Himself. The Lord not only saves in the work of the cross ("Justification" by our trusting in Him and what He has done for us), but the Lord also saves by the good work He does through our lives ("Sanctification" or in the Lord helping us to obey His commands within the New Testament so as to make us holy because He lives within us).

For who ultimately does the "good work" in a believer's life?

Is it God?
Or is it the believer?

Well, Scripture tells us that God (Christ) is the One who ultimately does the work within a believer.

For that is why the 24 elders cast their crowns down before Jesus (Revelation 4:10). For the crowns they received for their good work was all the result of Christ working in them.

Yeah, but doesn't a believer do the work, too? Now, yes, it is true; A believer is created unto Christ Jesus for good works (Ephesians 2:10); And a believer is indeed held accountable by their "good works" here upon this Earth at a Judgment. But we must also realize that true believers are not ultimately doing these "good works" alone or of their own power, though. For in 1 Corinthians 15:10 Paul said that he labored more than all of his brethren, yet he said it was not him that labored but it was the grace of God that was within him. So true believer's are just choosing to allow God's "good work" to flow within them or not.

So no. I do not believe in Man Directed Works Alone Salvationism. I believe if someone truly has accepted the LORD and Christ lives within them, then good fruit (And not bad fruit) will be evident in their life to prove that the One who is salvation itself abides within them (1 John 5:12).

After We are Saved by God's Grace,
Works Are Also Required As a Part of the Salvation Process:

(Here are a List of Verses):

“Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only." (James 2:24).
"Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.” (James 2:17-18).
"They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate." (Titus 1:16).
"If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, "(1 Timothy 6:3-4).
"...God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." (James 4:6).
"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? (Romans 6:1-2).
"And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him." (Hebrews 5:9).
"Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14).
"If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha." (1 Corinthians 16:22).
"If ye love me, keep my commandments." (John 14:15).
“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8).
"Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls." (James 1:21).
"But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: For there is no respect of persons with God." (Romans 2:8-11).
"For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved." (John 3:20).
“For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.” (Romans 11:21-22).
"...but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments." (Matthew 19:17).
“Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” (Philippians 2:12).
“...And having become servants of God, ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end, everlasting life.” (Romans 6:22).
“In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.” (1 John 3:10).

When we stay on the Cross as the only remedy for sin, then it truly acts as the remedy for sin at every level, and obedience is produced within us because we are born of God and are abiding in Him.

How does this belief work for the author, you, and others who believe this?
My guess is that it doesn't really work all to well because it contradicts many verses in the Bible.

I mean, what do you make of verses like Jude 1:4?

It says this in the New International Version:

"For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord." (Jude 1:4 NIV).

Okay, when a person says they are saved even when they disobey God, how are they not turning God's grace into a license for immorality in that particular instance?

Remember, Adam and Eve were spiritually separated from God by just one sin. In other words, it doesn't take lots of sin or an excessive lifestyle of sin alone to show that a person is not of God. One sin is all it takes.

Side Note:

Oh, and please take note that we can deny God by our lack of works, too
(See Titus 1:16).
