The pope is not a one man band.

The infallible teachings of the Pope are part of the Sacred Magisterium, which also consists of ecumenical councils and the "ordinary and universal magisterium." (wikipedia)
But the pope can declare something ex cathedra without the approval of the Magisterium.

As I stated in a different thread recently, there has been a history of violence within Christianity. It appears that I should perhaps list some of the highlights again.....

(1) The violence against Jews is one of the worst tragedies and Catholic theologian Hans Kung himself said that the Holocaust would probably never have happened but for the history of Christian violence and discrimination against the Jews.
(7) The endorsement of slavery in the American South by Evangelical pastors and the apparent tepid acceptance in Louisiana by Catholic priests, is another sad chapter.
(8) The endorsement of physical violence, aka torture, for six centuries, by the Holy office of the Inquisition, needs no further commentary.
(9) The persecution of the Native Americans also needs no further statement.

(1) Maybe but really doesn't make Christianity the fault. Anti-judaism in the Middle Ages is based on faith alone, but with the Advent of Nationalism a political faction called "Völkischer Nationalismus", race-based Nationalism in the 19th century established itself in Germany. These adherents and the National Socialists as well, did not base their hatred on faith, but race. Unlike faith, race cannot be changed.
(7) Both sides in the american civil war based their justification in christian faith (back then america was a christian nation). Just read the lyrics of battle hymn of the republic and take a look at the origin of abolitionist movement
(8) Only 2% of examined people were killled in the inquisition. Every single one is too much, but it is blown out of proportion, during the spanish inquisiton, that lasted 300 years, historians think that at most 3000 people were in fact killed
(9) The Church was also the first and most steadfast defender of the rights of converted indians

Can you show a case where a heretic was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death wrongly?

George Wishart.

The Catholic Church has repented, in the truest sense of the word. She has apologized, and no longer kills people for heresy.

Is that becaue she no longer has state power or because she has admitted she was wrong for so many Centuries?

God Bless :)

The Dutch Baptist Anneken Hendriks, accused of heresy when the Netherlands were under Spanish Hegemony.

What then? What is your view of the Inquisition?[/QUOTE]The Inquisitions, all of them, were more concerned with religious purity than anything governments wanted, except that governments wanted good order and discipline, and thus it was in their interests for their kingdoms to be of the same faith. That was true for at least 1000 years, as Goths, and others' kings converted to Catholicism, so did their subjects.

But what is your view of the inquisition? For example good/bad, right/wrong.

I am not sure we should be rushing to make a moral judgement on the actions of people 500 years ago. Different times, different laws, different histories. If we could transport some of these Inquisitors to modern day U.S., I think that they would be repulsed by our killing over 600,000 babies through abortion per year. This figure is several thousand times higher than even the worst year of the Inquisition. Then if we asked them to justify their actions, I bet they would also have much better reasons and much better deliberations before anyone was killed than we do.

Hello there. Good to meet you. In light of the ten commandments I believe there are certain moral absolutes. What's right or wrong 500 years past is still either right or wrong. Absolutely morality doesnt change over time. 600,000 babies dying is wrong in any time and place. God Bless :)

Good for the Church to have a process to determine the state of peoples' souls. Right for the same reason. It is possible that some inquisitors overstepped their commission, but that changes nothing about the overal Inquisition.

Hello Root. Thanks for your reply. Were the power to torture and execute part of the commission? Do you think it would still be good for the church to have a process to determine the state of peoples' souls? :)

Torture and execution were left to the state, if the Church felt she could no longer rehabilitate.

As a matter of fact, the Office of the Inquisition is now called the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Cardinal Ratzinger was the head of that Congregation when he was elected Pope. Luis Ferrer, SJ. I don't know if he's a cardinal, but I suppose he is. I know he's an archbishop.
