I happen to think mice are very cute. They could use a little manners though. They never stick to and finish one item....If you have two loaves of bread, They will taste a little of both loaves instead of just finishing one loaf at a time......same with everything else in the cabinet......What's up with that?

Maybe they are secret restaurant critics

We just found out that we have mice in our house :confounded::fearscream:.

My wife and I were discussing the theological significance of this the other night and it got me thinking. I know that Yahweh sent mice in order to harass the Philistines (God's judgment upon them). Which reminds me that Yahweh can do more with an army of mice than any king can do with an army of warriors. But I don't believe that we have mice because God is judging us.

However, God may be disciplining us and weaning us off an inappropriate attachment to this world. Our loving Father might certainly do such a thing.

But then I got to thinking about Satan. Some people, when facing an issue like this, might be inclined to think that this is spiritual warfare and that Satan sent these mice to harass them and goad them toward unbelief and sin.

But is this biblical? Satan, through his lies and schemes, certainly is able to have an influence over people. But Satan cannot command anything in creation. He has no control over mice, wind, waves, or anything else. All of creation is under Yahweh's control. Even when Satan harassed Job he had to get Yahweh's permission.

So do I have mice because God is judging me, because God is disciplining me, or because Satan is harassing me? Or some combination?

Discuss.
You have mice in your house because it's warmer in your house than it is outside.... period...

I have not lived in a house, yet, that does not have mice. It is my understanding that if you have a house, you have mice too... They may just be in the attic or other areas that are not your living quarters. They may not be able to get into your living area if it has sufficient drywall and seals around the pipes and other fixtures.

But, don't be alarmed.... It's not God punishing you. It's not Satan either.

When God is going to go to any length to turn you around.... you will be well aware of it.

There will be no questions?

Most of the time when we face storms and challenges, from God, they are something that we grow from or learn from.

After we get through those trials, the lessons we learned or the change of heart we gained, will be to God's glory in how we live the rest of our lives, due to the experience of that trial.

It may even be to council someone else in their trials due to our experiences and mistakes in our own lives.

None of the above. You have mice because there is food for them in your house. Try using metal food containers to keep the out. If mice have no food then will not stay.

Good to know.

So God isn't involved at all?

Hi.

I think it's too easy to spiritualise everything. Sometimes things just happen, it doesn't have to mean God is judging you (isn't that Jesus point in Luke 13:1-6?). Of course, God can use these things to deepen our faith - and yes, he does discipline us, but to suggest that every thing that happens is God or Satan is, to me, taking it too far.

You said it's cold, so to me a better interpretation would simply be that the mice are looking for somewhere warm with food.

I think it's strange that a Bible believing Christian person would believe that some things "just happen" and that God is not involved. The hairs of our head are all numbered and not a sparrow falls to the ground without his permission.

Every time I plough a field I soon have a retinue of foxes and hawks feeding on the mice fleeing their nests. Poor creatures, no wonder they go for the Airbnb option.

I thought that mice were not the burrowing type. Do they live in the dirt?

It sounds like you're saying two things here:
  1. This is not the finger of God.
  2. This is a trial from God.
Is this a trial from God to refine me and improve my ability to minister to others? Or is this just a random event in which God is not involved?

Fieldmice, voles, other small critters do, they build nests anywhere that feels protected, using whatever is to hand. I’m not sure how much burrowing they do, they tend to be near the surface

Sorry for the confusion, I am not saying it is either...

I'm saying that it is part of life.

I'm saying that if you were going through a trial... you would know it, it would be specific to you and your family, you would go through it and be better for it.

Everyone has mice...not everyone knows it..

When they find out... they are surprised.

I think my six year old son is on the right track. He thinks that Satan is trying to discourage us and get us to "join his side" by tempting us to believe that God is not taking care of us. Furthermore, he thinks that God is trying to teach us about sin. He is right. Having sin in your life is like having mice in your house!

From the mouths of babes! I should ask his perspective more often because his answers usually cut to the quick.

Why do you think that trials are always obvious? Sometimes trials make us better. But sometimes they break us. That's why they're trials, right?

Here's what the Heidelberg Catechism says on the matter:

27. Q.What do you understand by the providence of God?

A.God's providence is
his almighty and ever present power, 1
whereby, as with his hand, he still upholds
heaven and earth and all creatures, 2
and so governs them that
leaf and blade,
rain and drought,
fruitful and barren years,
food and drink,
health and sickness,
riches and poverty, 3
indeed, all things,
come to us not by chance 4
but by his fatherly hand. 5
28. Q.What does it benefit us to know that God has created all things and still upholds them by his providence?

A. We can be patient in adversity, 1
thankful in prosperity, 2
and with a view to the future
we can have a firm confidence
in our faithful God and Father
that no creature shall separate us
from his love; 3
for all creatures are so completely in his hand
that without his will
they cannot so much as move. 4

If you are sure that the mice are messengers, micengers if you like, look at it this way.

Your cat is your spiritual protector, but he is not doing his job...he is not up to scratch. The mice have found a channel of which he is oblivious.

The mice are false doctrines, which are nibbling your bread, ( word of God).

Jude1:4
For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

But if you are not sure, then they are just a natural occurence, like the air blowing through the window....which may of course be highly toxic, unawares to you, because you are downwind a fracking site

Part of the theologically interesting aspect of this question is the notion of "natural occurrence". What do you mean by this expression? Does this mean an occurrence that is not caused by God and in which he is not a part? If so, I would challenge this notion as unbiblical.

God causes all natural occurences, but as the Bible tells us, nature's default setting is neutral and inconsequential, as the sun shines on the righteous and unrighteous alike.

This is not neutral and not without consequence. The sun shining is God's grace, blessing, and love communicated to his creatures. Nothing is neutral. An "unfortunate event" can be God's judgment for one person and God's discipline for another. A "fortunate event" is God's grace and love for sinners and the righteous alike.

When I break wind, I try to attribute it to divine factors, but my girlfriend does not see it that way

Every time you fart you should thank God for a well-functioning GI system. He maintains it, you know.
