I no longer attend a Messianic congregation. There aren't any in my area, but I would be very picky about where I went if there were. My husband is a Jewish believer. I have done Ha Yesod at least twice, but I am not Torah observant at this time. I don't feel the need to post to religious threads where my beliefs are different than standard Messianic belief. So - - I don't want to be a party crasher but there are some topics I am interested in that you address. So that's me. What do you say? Thanks for your attention in this matter.

I am sorry to hear you don't have any congregations close by, have you tried searching on the internet for those who livestream services?

I'm disabled and can't get out much so that is what I do. Normally on a Shabbat (including erev Shabbat) I 'attend' from 1 to 4 services depending on how I feel.

It's nice that they are spread out across the country so I can watch back to back but at the same time live so I get the feeling of being with Mishpocha.

Some I 'attend' are from New York, Alabama, Arizona, and Washington state. If I miss the exact time I can always play the saved video.

Some have online seddur but if you have any you can usually follow along.

If possible, would you mind posting the links to the service live streams? I've found it difficult to find them myself, though I have to be several good recorded ones. Beth Immanuel in Wisconsin, my favorite and the one I'm a "virtual member" with does not do live streams on Shabbat so as to not violate the day for the members that are more Torah observant.

Do you listen to Bet Tikvah in Newcastle, Washington? We used to live 100.miles from their congregation, and we were able to go there occasionally. I was able to go to their women's retreat one year. I loved that Hylan and Rita are actually Jewish and there was no weird stuff in the service. Rita is a beautiful woman and knows everything about the women in her congregation, with a real heart of a pastor.

my beliefs are different than standard Messianic belief.

What is the standard? In my experience the beliefs from congregation to congregation differ greatly. Even within congregations the beliefs differ so greatly, that unfortunately, they sometimes break up.

The good news.... (I guess) is that none of the adults that I have met were born into MJ. Almost all arrived to it, seeking the truth. They've helped me to grow in my understanding; as I've helped them to grow in their understandings, despite our differences. Our differences come from someone not understanding the whole truth. I'll be the first to admit that I have a long way to go in my search.

Thanks. That is encouraging. I have found some beliefs within the Messianic community to be a little fringy, I think because it's a growing edge, and I think Satan tries to get in on the action.

What are the key diversities?

Just about every level of theology - sufficient for him to write a whole book on it!

Here is an excerpt of a review of the book:

Book Review by Raymond Pfister of Richard Harvey's
Mapping Messianic Jewish Theology: A Constructive Approach - Studies in Messianic Jewish Theology.
Milton Keynes: Paternoster, 2009. (316 pages) ISBN 978-1842276440.

As an engaged Messianic Jewish practitioner himself, Richard Harvey was a founding member of the London Messianic Congregation, and also served as President of the International Messianic Jewish Alliance. This book is a revised version of his doctoral dissertation (Ph.D., University of Wales, Lampeter).
The publication of Harvey’smost significant research fills an important gap in a relatively new field of study, i.e. Messianic Jewish theology (there are some 150,000 estimated Jewish believers in Jesus worldwide). Being the first of its kind, logically this monograph does not claim to be exhaustive. His proposed taxonomy is extremely helpful, as it shows how plurality rather than uniformity characterizes its more recent developments. He identifies eight distinctive approaches (which he calls
types or streams of thought) on a theological continuum moving from a more Christian (i.e. Gentilized) to a more Jewish understanding of the faith. He quotes extensively various Messianic Jewish authors on a selection of major theological themes: the doctrine of God, the messiahship of Jesus, Torah (in theory and practice), and the future of Israel. It is particularly significant to take note of the fact that Messianic Judaism is actually not a child of (modern-day) Judaism, but is born out of (modern-day) Protestant evangelicalism and the Charismatic movement.
Harvey’s work pays however very little attention to the pneumatology of Messianic Jews! Moreover, a great majority of Messianic Jews have adopted and are directly or indirectly influenced in their thinking about Jewishness and Jewish identity by Dispensationalism and the presuppositions of its hermeneutical system. This is most obviously seen in the considerable impact of dispensational eschatology and its specific premillennial features (i.e. detailed discussions around end-time scenarios and various views about a thousand-year reign of the Messiah). There is little expectation that this will change in the near future

Copyright: Raymond Pfister

The book is titled: 'Mapping Messianic Jewish Theology' by Dr. Richard Harvey, published in the UK.

The book has been in the Book List sticky for quite some time :)
