I've started to believe in God but I think to believe I need some sort of proof that God is there. I've heard stories of people praying and then receiving a sign from God, but for me there is nothing. How do you receive signs from God? And am I doing something wrong?

Hi and welcome to the forum in Jesus name, it is a great place to be. I know that you will have lots of help and advice.
A good place to start is John 3:16
to accept the free gift of forgiveness and eternal life, thank you Jesus

Hebrews 11 has great principles of faith, even in the first few verses of the chapter.

"But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." (Hebrews 11.6)

I suspect that lots of people who think they have received signs from God, in fact, have not. There's certainly nothing in the Bible to suggest we should expect a sign, and in fact suggests that people who chase after signs are going about it all wrong.

In a very real sense, there is something like what the Danish Lutheran philosopher Soren Kierkegaard described as the "leap to faith". Not a leap of faith, but leap to faith. That no amount of reason or evidence can get us from A to B here; it is an existential leap.

Well if you really believe in God, that is in faith and with trust in other words. You should start to see Him reveal Himself in the little details of your life. Things you might have blown off as coincidence start to look more like they had a plan behind them. That's because they do, it's called God ! You start to see the life in things, so in other words a flower may be pretty, it always was pretty but now you see it as part of creation. It's not something that just happened, it lives.

With that said here is the real deal. Do you just believe that there is God ( a really good thing to believe ) or do you believe and trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior ? Jesus is the deal breaker, through Him the bigger changes in your life are seen because He is the communicator with God the Father for us. When we pray through Jesus, He decodes the message for us so to speak.

Of course non of this is like wishing upon a star or giving Santa Claus our wish list, it's not about a big miracle a day. Living with God in your life is seeing Him at work in things in your life. You just keep going and one day you can look back at the things He was in , the little things that worked out in your life when you thought they couldn't , protection from an enemy at times. But it takes faith and it takes trust and it takes Jesus Christ in order to open your eyes and ears spiritually..And it can take some time, you are new at this after all.

Hi Platinum12, first off, WELCOME TO CF ..

As for proof of God's existence, just take a look all around you :) The Bible tells us (somewhat poetically, in fact) that Creation itself is all the evidence anyone should ever need to be fully assured that God exists .. click here: Job 12:7-9; Psalm 19:1-6, Romans 1:18-20. I remember someone telling me once that the possibility of a tornado blowing through a junk yard and creating a fully-formed, fully-functional Boeing 747 is far more likely to happen on its own than the scope and complexities of Creation happening on its own (IOW, happening apart from an Intelligent Designer/Creator .. as our atheist friends and scientists would have us believe).

As for our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ (who is also known as Emmanuel, which translated means, "God with us" .. see Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23), along with the historical records, both Biblical and extra-Biblical concerning Him, many "signs" (so to speak) have already been given, but His death and His Resurrection to life, just 3 days after He was buried, is principle among them according to the Bible .. see Matthew 12:38-40.

If you'd like to know more about God, why we all need a Savior/what we need to be saved from (and the Good News concerning that), or anything else for that matter, please don't hesitate to ask us :)

Praying for you!

Yours in Christ,
David

Romans 10
9 If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
10 for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

When asked for a sign Jesus answered thusly:

Matthew 12: NKJV

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”

39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

From what I have read, you have received some excellent advice.

Now the first thing I would need to know is .....Are you A JEW?
You see, Jews required a sign.

You do not need or should you expect a "sign" from God. You now have the written Word of God which contain everything that you need in order to be save.

All any person needs to be saved is the simple truth that Jesus Christ died to pay their penalty for sin.

Jesus Himself said to us......"Blessed are those who Believe WITHOUT SEEING ".

Salvation is NOT something we have to see or feel or smell. It is not thrills and chills but instead the love Jesus Christ for ALL WHO WILL BELIEVE upon Him for the payment of their sins.

To me, whether or not I see signs from God is a result of my perception, not God’s revelation. When I look at creation itself, I see the work of God. When I see my family and all with which I have been blessed, I see the grace of God. When read of Calvary, I see the love of God.

I beg you that God may be omnipresent
Where we perceived chaos and nothingness
May be the loving and careful ministry of deity
Our universe functions on multiple dimensions above and beyond our 3 dimensions of perception
Through our supreme faith in the fairness and unchanging nature of God's divine plan
May we someday ascend to a place where me may get to know hem* and attain hem*

Christianity is based in faith, not signs. And in this current age of deception, it must be so, for the devil will quickly deceive someone with false signs and wonders.

Read a solid translation of the word of God (NASB or KJV), believe it for what it says, and trust that God will give you wisdom when you ask for it to make decisions and that His divine providence will order your steps as you traverse this wicked, deceptive world. Jesus is our only hope in more ways than one.

I don't know what more proof you could ask for than the existence of the universe. Have you ever asked yourself why there is something rather than nothing? Science tells us that the universe did not always exist, that it had a beginning point a finite time in the past. But everything that begins to exist has to have a cause, right? Things don't just pop into being out of nothing. We don't see cans of root beer, or horses, or wedding cakes, or mountains suddenly popping into existence. Why, then, should we think the universe did? Because it's really big? That's just silly. Science tells us that there was no time, space, matter, or energy before the Big Bang. There was no thing. At all. So where did the universe come from, then? As I said, nothing cannot produce something. There had to be something that was not in time, that had no physical form, that was unimaginably powerful, and that was personal that brought the universe into being. That timeless, immaterial, personal and powerful Cause of the universe the Bible says is God, the uncaused First Cause. This makes very good sense to me. How about you?

There was a religious sect among the Jews called the Pharisees. They wanted to see a sign from God. They challenged Jesus to show them such a sign as proof of his claims to being divine. But Jesus said to them,

Matthew 16:4
4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah." And He left them and departed.

Jesus' remark about Jonah pointed to his resurrection after three days in the grave - just as Jonah was spit out of the belly of a whale after three days. That was all the sign God was going to give to the Pharisees - and to all mankind. If you want a sign, then, look to the historical record of the Resurrection. For a great and thorough examination of this event check out:

God tells us how to approach Him and to enter into a relationship with Him. He sets the ground rules for us, not the other way 'round. When we start requiring God to do "something special," to act miraculously in order to persuade us to faith in Him, we are essentially demanding that God jump through our hoops; we are setting the ground rules, not Him. But God won't relate to us this way. He is God; we aren't. We must be prepared to do things His way, not our own. And so we read in His word:

Hebrews 11:6
6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
