  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Good Thoughts From Tolkien on Monogamy

As far as I remember, the elves in his lord of the rings universe tend to sleep around in their youth and then settle down once they get it out of their system.

No....that's ElfQuest. :D

Never heard of that.

Anyway, it's not really important what Tolkien thinks on this matter.

On a serious note, is that something that Tolkien's elves are supposedly known for? Is that from the Silmarillion?

This is good discussion of monogamy, gender differences, and true self-fulfillment.

I know that I've appreciated the literary allusions attached to Gandalf, and the striking friendship of someone like Samwise. In my own life, I don't think I've met anyone like either one of these two characters. Although, it seems to me that my wife thinks she is something like Galadriel. Well, I guess she is...

On that same note then, it doesn't matter what anybody thinks, and everybody should just shut up about it and never speak of it again.

This applies to everything of course, ever single crime then, is opinion and does not matter what someone says about it, to take it to such an extreme.

I don't recall this. Could you cite something?

Just because you made a faulty argument doesn't mean that my argument is faulty.
I pointed out how your argument was faulty, if what someone who disagrees with you says is not important then nothing anybody says is important.

When did Tolkien become an expert on women and female sexuality? The last time I checked, women are unfaithful nearly as often as men. Women are hardly more inclined towards monogamy at a significant rate. It is also disturbing that anyone would suggest that women withholding sex could/should result in men bettering themselves in order to "earn"sex.

Blech, glad I'm married.

Indeed, although I like Tolkien, I'm not aware of how his comments line up with reality. Women are perfectly capable of being unfaithful.

I agree that the notion of "earning sex" is disturbing, but I have had to get used to it, since it's very common.

The problem with jumping through hoops to earn sex leaves you with men who believe they are owed it.

Women devalue themselves whenever they approach sex at extremes. Sex isn't nothing, and it isn't everything.

Another problem with it is that it means every marriage (or other sexual relationship) is just prostitution, which no one seems to think about when they promote this idea.

Also, why should women who desire sex make men jump through those hoops if they don't want to? Just so that the men stay virtuous?

That's just another flavor of telling women to dress modestly so that they don't tempt men.

I don't know that he was expert. He was writing a letter.

His opinions ring true for me. Women do stray. They're more likely to be lured away by a "good listener." Men are lured by physical attraction, not necessarily connected to communication.
