  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Even in the NT "sin IS transgression of the LAW" 1 John 3:4

And in Heb 8:6-10 that same Jeremiah 31:31-33 LAW of God - the moral law that defines sin - is "Written on the mind and heart" under the NEW Covenant made in Heb 8 with the "House of ISRAEL"

Paul shows a change in our relationship to the LAW that condemns all mankind under sin - taking place when we are converted... only when we are converted... which is when that law is written on the heart.

Notice "the details"

Gal 3
21 Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. 22 But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. 23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. 24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

"Sin IS transgression of the LAW" 1 John 3:4 - even in the NT

Rom 8
He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

Rom 6
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? ... 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin. ...
.12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! 16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?

Jer 31:31-33 says it is the SAME LAW of God known to Jeremiah and his readers that is 'written on the heart and mind' -- as even C.H. Spurgeon admits.

Jeremia and Spurgeon "also SDA"?? in your posting?
Only if one ignores the first 2/3's of the sentence.

Even in the NT "sin IS transgression of the LAW" 1 John 3:4
Bible proves that sin is more than transgression of the law of a law, that was given through Moses 430yrs after the promise to Abraham. You reject the facts that Jesus claimed that Moses gave the law. John wrote the law came by Moses.
And in Heb 8:6-10 that same Jeremiah 31:31-33 LAW of God - the moral law that defines sin - is "Written on the mind and heart" under the NEW Covenant made in Heb 8 with the "House of ISRAEL"
You ignore Jeremiah and Hebrews claim, that the covenant given after Egypt is not like the New Covenant. So you accept the old and reject the New.
Paul shows a change in our relationship to the LAW that condemns all mankind under sin - taking place when we are converted... only when we are converted... which is when that law is written on the heart.

you mean 'notice the cocktail'.

You left the main subject out of the details.

Gal 3:19 What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.

The law was added to the promise (given to Abraham) until (Jesus )the promise came. That explains why if the law was given to Abraham there would be no promise without the condition of keeping the law.

Notice of how a SDA study of Galatians 3 have to dance around what Paul is teaching in this chapter. Paul spells out clearly, that if the promise had the law attached, it wouldn't be a promise at all, if the law was a condition. (proving that law came 430yrs after the promise as stated in this context Gal 3:17)
Gal 3:18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

Gal 3:23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Clue: After faith came we're not under the law.

You can see the part of Gal 3 that people need to avoid because they -- don't quote it.

1. In Gal 3 as in Romans 3 Paul makes the case that the Law applies to ALL mankind regardless of Jew or Gentile and that by that Law ALL are condemned as sinners - ALL need a savior.

2. As Paul points out in Gal 3 the Law of God does not "Save" it is not a "kind of savior" that used to work in the OT but now doesn't work so well. It never functioned as "savior".

3. Paul points out in Romans 7 and in Romans 10 that a person is born-again "Saved" at the moment that "faith comes". RND makes a good point about Heb 11 providing a great example of the giants of the faith - for whom "Faith had come" and they were "found pleasing to God" as a result of that Gospel transaction in their lives.

This is the same gospel event Paul is identifying in Gal 3 for all mankind. All mankind is lost - kept under bondage to sin and under condemnation of the law UNTIL we come to Christ and accept salvation. This was true in OT AND in NT. No change.

As Paul argues in Gal 3:7 the Gospel "was preached to Abraham".

As Paul argues in Heb 4:1 "the Gospel was preached to US just as it was to them".

As Paul argues in Gal 1:6-11 there has been only ONE Gospel in all of time!

BobRyan's and SDA explanation of the gospel is similar to their explanation of the Old Covenant.

And by "SDA" are you talking about D.L. Moody ??

============================================
D.L. Moody writes in favor of God's TEN Commandments as do many other Bible scholars and pastors - even pro-sunday ones.

http://www.fbinstitute.com/moody/The_TenCommandments_Text.html

BY THE
DWIGHT L. MOODY
The Ten Commandments:
Exodus 20:2-17
.

The Fourth Commandment

Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the LORD made heaven and Earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath Day, and hallowed it.

[FONT=&quot]THERE HAS BEEN an awful letting-down in this country regarding the Sabbath during the last twenty-five years, and many a man has been shorn of spiritual power, like Samson, because he is not straight on this question. Can you say that you observe the Sabbath properly? You may be a professed Christian: are you obeying this commandment? Or do you neglect the house of God on the Sabbath day, and spend your time drinking and carousing in places of vice and crime, showing contempt for God and His law? Are you ready to step into the scales? Where were you last Sabbath? How did you spend it?

I honestly believe that this commandment is just as binding today as it ever was. I have talked with men who have said that it has been abrogated, but they have never been able to point to any place in the Bible where God repealed it. When Christ was on earth, He did nothing to set it aside; He freed it from the traces under which the scribes and Pharisees had put it, and gave it its true place.
"The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath." (Mark 2:27)
It is just as practicable and as necessary for men today as it ever was
- in fact, more than ever, because we live in such an intense age.

The Sabbath was binding in Eden, and it has been in force ever since. The fourth commandment begins with the word remember, showing that the Sabbath already existed when God wrote this law on the tables of stone at Sinai.
How can men claim that this one commandment has been done away with when they will admit that the other nine are still binding?

I believe that the Sabbath question today is a vital one for the whole country. It is the burning question of the present time. If you give up the Sabbath the church goes;

Another de-javu moment.

Indeed -- you cirlce-back to spinning the idea that this is all "SDA" when it comes to affirmation of the TEN commandments - only to be reminded of the irrefutable fact that folks like D.L. Moody and C.H. Spurgeon are not all "SDA".

de-javu ...

You initiated a comment about this being "SDA" and then had it handed back to you as a statement from Moody that you knew full well is there to debunk the way you were spinning it.

And this has been the irrefutable point at which your argument ceases - only to wait and "circle-back" to the "just SDA" idea later on.
==================================

and when they are caught "in the act" of trying to spin the entire point as if D.L. Moody, and C.H Spurgeon, and R.C. Sproul "did not exist" but rather imagining that it is "all SDA" -- and when they are exposed in that fraud - what is the response?

To Double DOWN

Notice of how a SDA study of Galatians 3..
BobRyan would rather put other words in Paul's mouth or quote DL Moody

How predictable the response to their refuted rabbit trail.

We've addressed this before. You're partial quoting 1John 3:4 so you can take it out of context.(Sabbath school lesson style )
After the law was given, sin is transgression of whatever the law says. When the seed came the law was set aside.
And in Heb 8:6-10 that same Jeremiah 31:31-33 LAW of God - the moral law that defines sin - is "Written on the mind and heart" under the NEW Covenant made in Heb 8 with the "House of ISRAEL"
False, These scriptures cant be any clearer. It's tell us that the New Covenant will not be like the Old Covenant (THE TEN COMMANDMENTS), that was made with the fathers.
God's laws written on the heart is NOT what was written on the stone tablets according to these scriptures.

Paul shows a change in our relationship to the LAW that condemns all mankind under sin - taking place when we are converted... only when we are converted... which is when that law is written on the heart.
Gentiles should have no relationship to the law. They came to God under the New Covenant. Gentiles are called to salvation by faith in Jesus Christ and not by perfecting the flesh by keeping the law. "READ IT AND BELIEVE".
Gal 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Gal 3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
Gal 3:4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.
Gal 3:5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Your commentary is misleading the ignorant.
The details of Gal 3:21-26 are along the lines of these facts: 1. Did the coming of the law shipwrecked the promise to Abraham? No way.
2. If any of the commandments promised eternal life, then righteousness would have been by the law.
3. So the scripture put everyone under sin..................(allowing the texts to lead)

9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

You're good at confusing and dodging the issues with unreasonable repeated arguments.

Excellent!!! Why is it you won't accept and believe the bolded blue from your quote?
1. In Gal 3 as in Romans 3 Paul makes the case that the Law applies to ALL mankind regardless of Jew or Gentile and that by that Law ALL are condemned as sinners - ALL need a savior.
NOPE!!!
2. As Paul points out in Gal 3 the Law of God does not "Save" it is not a "kind of savior" that used to work in the OT but now doesn't work so well. It never functioned as "savior".
Yeppers!!! It isn't included as a requirement of salvation. Paul does point out who the law is for in I Tim 1:9-10.
Yes and some of that list were before the law.

Ah but you mean the law is the Gospel. Sorry its not!
Even in the NT "sin IS transgression of the LAW" 1 John 3:4
This is a partial quote implying sin is only and always a transgression of the law. This can't be true because sin was before the law. Rom 5:13
And in Heb 8:6-10 that same Jeremiah 31:31-33 LAW of God - the moral law that defines sin - is "Written on the mind and heart" under the NEW Covenant made in Heb 8 with the "House of ISRAEL"
No where does either reference make the claim the covenant given to Israel is written on the heart of anyone who believes in Jesus Christ.
Paul shows a change in our relationship to the LAW that condemns all mankind under sin - taking place when we are converted... only when we are converted... which is when that law is written on the heart.
NOPE!!! because of my above comment.
"Sin IS transgression of the LAW" 1 John 3:4 - even in the NT
A half truth is a full lie.
Excellent! Why don't you believe it? The law applies strictly to the flesh. It doesn't change the heart. I see you've read part of Rom 6 as you quoted it below. Unfortunately you leave out a lot of chapter. Maybe, well no maybes about it contradicting what you believe.

Notice of how a SDA study of Galatians 3 have to dance around what Paul is teaching

Notice how every detail in the quote of Paul's teaching as demonstrated above is ignored - to make the wild claim that Paul's teaching is not being discussed on this very point??

Paul shows a change in our relationship to the LAW that condemns all mankind under sin - taking place when we are converted... only when we are converted... which is when that law is written on the heart.

snips??

It isn't included as a requirement of salvation.

New Covenant "I will write My LAWS on their heart and mind" Heb 8:6-10
Rev 14:12 "the saints keep the Commandments of God AND their faith in Jesus"
Rom 8:4-9 the lost remain at war against the Commandments of God

Paul does point out who the law is for

Until you read Gal 3:21-22 and Romans 3:19-21.

Romans 3

19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

"Sin IS transgression of the LAW" 1 John 3:4

Gal 3
21 Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. 22 But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin,

After the law was given, sin is transgression of whatever the law says. When the seed came the law was set aside.

Your ability to "quote yourself" as the text for your doctrine remains undiminished.

This is confusing for a reason. Gal 3 is saying: non of commandments gives life, so we're not under the law. This is where SDA like to quote 1John 3:4 out of context, rather than accept the fact that the world has always been under sin but not under law. Because of false arguments, SDA have to run away from context.

Gal 3 is saying: non of commandments gives life, so we're not under the law.

Not under the law as a "gospel" as a way for the lost to gain eternal life.

But as Galatians 3 points out - that moral law of God continues to condemn the entire world as sinners in need of salvation.

And Romans 6 insists that sinning against the Law of God is not an option for Christians.

This is where SDA like to quote 1John 3:4

We quote it saying "SIN IS transgression of the LAW" - and thus both SDAs and the majority of EVEN pro-sunday scholars agree -- the moral law of God - remains for the saints -- rather the rank rebellion being the "gift" of the saints.

the world has always been under sin but not under law.

Gal 3 says all the world is condemned as sinners under the law - so then you "quote you" to contradict it?? How "instructive"

Gen_17:11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.

...................................................................................
Gal 3:17 And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect.

Gal 3:18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

Gal 3:19 What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.

Nice thread on Galatians 3 --

The entire chapter of Galatians 3 is about the Old Covenant law that was based on the 10 commandments, which Paul says is now an unemployed schoolmaster:

"But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster." (Galatians 3:23-25).

Fine - the Galatians topic it is. Will give you a thread fully devoted to the chapter - you will have lots of room to make your case.

Notice that in Gal 3 the role of the Law of God to the lost is to point them to the need of Christ - as we also see in Romans 3.

But nothing in Gal 3 says it is ok to "take God's name in vain" once we become a Christian" and we both know it.

Rather as Paul says in Romans 3 - "we ESTABLISH the LAW" as Christians. Rom 3:31 because it is "written on the heart and mind" Hebrews 8:6-10 under the NEW Covenant.

In Gal 3 - it is ABRAHAM that is demonstrating how this is lived out - who has the ONE Gospel preached to him Gal 3:8.

In the NT SIN is STILL defined as "Transgression of the LAW" in 1 John 3:4 and in James 2... and Romans 7.

Gen_17:10  This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised;
Gen_17:11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.

It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.

.

We all agree that it was "sin" to take God's name in vain - before Sinai and also to this very day.

The fact that it is "written down" at Sinai - changes nothing.
