  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thanks.
please excuse my inquisitive nature.

How does one equate to being well studied. I have studied Christianity for a long time (20 years now). No theologian :)

Im an amateur

Does this make me well studied?
Or do i need a degree?

Cheers
It depends upon how and where you studied. If you can't see the countless flaws in the Bible I would have to say that your education was lacking.

This page does not make me tremble. It seems luke warm.

How bout you give me an instance?

Or

Got anything else?

Cheers

Tell me, why would the Bible being full of flaws make you tremble?

And no, it is too late at night to pick out specific cases for you. But I will name one that is surely in there, but I am not quoting it. Luke had Jesus born at two different dates, ten years apart.

Yes, but then one everyone has prejudices. I may disagree with how far he goes, but it does not seem to affect his scientific work.

But my prejudice effects my position?

How is he better than us plebs?

Cheers

I was referring to the page you linked. :)

In relation to luke. Could you supply the verses which seem to contradict?

Yes, he can be a bit harsh at times. He is an anti-theist. That is an atheist that declares all gods to be impossible. He also has little patience with dishonesty.
Our debate followed a pretty predictable pattern. He would elaborate on some pretty interesting things and then he would go ballistic, it never changed. His analysis of certain fossils was fascinating but he acted like he never heard of Charles Darwin. He caught me flat footed when I mentioned that Mendel had written Darwin, something I heard on NPR. When he challenged me to produce the source material he started calling me a hypocrite. I later found out that all that's left of the letter is a fragment, kept somewhere in a museum. At the time I was dumbfounded by his reaction and to this day wonder what he got so exercised about.

I remember he asked me why he should care about Gregor Mendel, calling him 'some monk'. It was kind of surprising since he was pursuing higher education at the time and acted like he had never heard of the father of modern genetics. Nelson was, and I assume is, a family man, totally devoted to his kids. I guess his parents were Mormons and he couldn't understand why Mormonism wasn't considered Christian.

I would have really liked to hear more from him on hominid fossils, I really would have liked to have heard what he thought of comparative genomics. Arguably my all time favorite nemesis on this board and while I have no real interest in his worldview, thought he was capable of real brilliance.

I wish him well, kind of miss him.

You let your prejudices affect you far more than he allows his to affect him. Look at how you won't face up to the fact that the Bible is far from perfect.

Really? You claimed to have studied the Bible. The nativity. Herod died in roughly 4 BCE. The only possible census that supposedly made Joseph go to Bethlehem was the Census of Quirinius. That was in 6 CE:

We have been over this. Your prejudices will not allow you to properly study your Bible. If one can't own up to obvious flaws then one is prejudiced beyond reason. One cannot properly study the book if you can't be honest with yourself.

Do you need the verses? They are in the book of Luke. He used the false excuse that a census required Joseph to go to his ancestral home. Of course censuses never require that to start with. The author of Luke failed there. That is counterproductive. In Luke 2 he tells how Quirnius ordered a census. The date of that is well known. It was in the year 6 CE:

Census of Quirinius - Wikipedia

But he also said Jesus was born in the reign of Herod, read Luke 1. Also Matthew has Jesus born during Herod's reign. Herod died in 4 BCE. That is an error that no apologist has been able to answer.

By the way, you are not using the Socratic method. You do not understand that. That is used when the questioner knows more than the person being asked. It is the other way around here. You are continually shown to be ignorant not only about science, by about your own Bible.

I would like to discuss specific instances with you if I may. I would like to ask first however, do you believe in a literal, inerrant Bible? If yes, fine we'll go from there. If not, could you state how you interpret the Bible?
