A teen took his life, now his family is suing his school and the police - CNN.com

A 16-year-old high school student was summoned to the principal's office for what appears to have been a failed "scared straight" session... that ended with him taking a swan dive off of a parking garage after being led to believe that he was about to be hit with life-altering criminal charges.

Given that just about everything the principal and the campus police did was illegal, I'm hoping that his family gets every last penny they're suing for.

God have mercy.

Praying for all of Corey Walgren's Family and loved ones and all who knew and loved this 16 year old, at this most tragic and excruciating time of shock, loss, and grief.

Yes, everything was illegal, including the statutory rape…

if you're saying he is guilty of statutory rape then since they are both sixteen and it's illinois then she is just as guilty of statutory rape as well.

I'm praying for the girl who was involved as well. I hope she does not feel responsible for his death. This is so sad.

It IS tragic. Certainly we wish to pray for this girl, but at the moment, her parents will not be attending a funeral under horrific circumstances and tragic beyond comprehension reality of Corey Walgren's demise.

Continuing to pray, and for the girl and her family, however this is about this boy who died tragically. He's gone. I can't imagine the indescribable and excruciating pain and trauma they are experiencing.

It's heart wrenching.

This is why justifying doing whatever you want with "...as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else" is a fallacy.

We have no idea who we hurt, and how deeply we hurt and affect them.

What is more alarming (and perhaps indicative of the society) is that somehow, all of these young people have reasoned suicide as the best option. When did kids as young as 8 find out suicide is an option at all - with the fortitude to actually go through with it? What does it say about our present and future if the kids are killing themselves off? This is ridiculous.

The police and principal need to face appropriate consequences. There was already a legal precedent for persons who provoke another to suicide (ex girlfriend egged on her ex boyfriend to kill himself on video chat and comments.)

His parents said that the night before they had been talking about which college he would attend.
A felon, registered sex offender, is not going to get into college. He had to be thinking that his whole life was ruined.
When will law enforcement be trained in how to talk to kids.

When enough people understand that the "scared straight" and other get tough on whatever the latest moral panic nonsense isn't beneficial.

Well, to say that those kinds of programs aren't beneficial at all would be false... I think there's a certain level of merit to the idea of showing where certain kinds of actions end up. The question is really, what kinds of actions should the "scared straight" strategy be implemented for?

In this case, he was having consensual sex, and recording it (why people continue to do this, I don't know...with all of the leaked sex tapes out there, people should know that's a bad idea) knowing that he and his partner were underage. He definitely made a mistake, and people have been charged in cases like this...however, I don't know that telling him a huge scare story was the right approach in this situation.

I understand that. But, there are many people (some would say an entire class of people) wrongfully accused, and abused by the system such that at fifteen their entire lives are ruined and utterly destroyed.

So, let me say: this is not a "strength" or "spirit" thing necessarily - or a comparison of classes/races/ages/etc. I am focusing purely on the objective humanity: why is this human not only entertaining suicide as a pubescent, but he has the fortitude to go through with it?

This bothers me because children aren't full of urine and vinegar like us adults. I know this person is an adult some places, but he is still a kid*. And, since children represent the best of us, why are kids turning to suicide instead of endurance, or confidence? What have we done to get to the point where our children would rather kill themselves that talk/write/sing/train it out?

Again, I am critiquing the objective (as possible) humanity; every time I hear of a child (up to the point that you can support yourself) committing suicide, I personally feel like a failure in a way. As said, these younger generations represent the best, albeit most idealistic of us. What is going on?

*
As per the example of young(er) kids receiving harsh, life-ending punishments - for fun, legal injustice or circumstance - do not kill themselves. Sure, they may go down darker paths, but while they are alive they are redeemable.

actually under illinois law both can be charged with statutory rape of the other.

The state is apparently run by barbarians.

Hopefully the parents will sue them so much that they won't do anything like this ever again.

What an awful law. Is all sex among teenagers Illinois rape by law?
