  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is Chivalry: Medieval Warfare ok?

Okay, so there is this game that I love playing......its called Chivalry:Medieval Warfare( I love medieval). There is a problem with the game play. I played the game before I was saved, and when I truly became a Christian, I couldn't decide if it was Christian or not. The thing about the game that makes it questionable is the gore in the game. The gore is pretty bad, but I barely ever even notice the gore happening. I just focus on the competitiveness of the game play. I'm not impressionable.

Do any of you know about this game?

About 30 years ago I attended a seminar presented by a retired US Army general. He pointed out that it is very difficult for most people to be motivated to kill another human being. This is a very real problem for the military. In a combat situation many soldiers 'freeze up' in various ways. Some simply refuse to shoot, others will shoot but not at the enemy and some others will simply go through the motions without actually firing their weapon. For example, following the Battle of Gettysburg approximately 11,000 unfired muskets were recovered. The vast majority had been loaded and reloaded sometimes over a dozen times but had never been fired.

In the mid 1950s following the Korean war this officer was tasked with finding a way around this problem. As a psychologist he decided to try desensitization techniques. Recruits were shown professionally prepared extremely graphic films depicting military actions that included soldiers being wounded and/or killed.

Did this approach work? Yes, it certainly did as witness the Viet Nam War. Some American soldiers were desensitized to the point that military discipline was broken and mass killings of enemy civilians occurred.

So, what was the point of his presentation? He pointed out that desensitization actually works very well but it is no longer limited to military training purposes. The population, particularly the young and most impressionable, are now being exposed to movies, TV programs, comics and video games that are far more graphic and brutal than the military films that were prepared under his direction.

His concern was very simple and straightforward --- we are in the process right now of desensitizing an entire population to violence and death. It should be no surprise to us at all when we see young people brutalizing and killing each other sometimes on a large scale.

Is this a problem that we should be concerned about?

I think so.

One of my family members actually was a devout Christian, and they would play Halo.

What do your parents think?

Well my parents are pretty much "Lukewarm", so they don't really monitor me on what I play.

I would recommend taking it before God, for me it is not forbidden, i do disagree with Jack RT, yes videos were used, but there is more that must happen to breakdown that wall. If someone is having difficulty distinguishing reality from virtual reality, then it does lead to problems. I am quite a fan of Battlefield 1 and For Honor. I have the gift of discernment and I can play with no problems.

The only person who can really answer that for you, is you. Sometimes, following Christ means not doing things we'd really like to do.
James 4:17 says, Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
So what's the Holy Spirit telling you? Is the game good, or not?

Do you want to be the best person you can be for God? Are you content with just being OK? What kind of relationship do you want with God? Playing the game may no be the issue. You may be mature enough as a Christian to play the game without suffering detrimental effects. Are other people going to look at you playing the game and wonder if being a Christian is really any different than being unsaved? On the other hand, is playing the game going to offer you opportunities to talk to others about Jesus?

I used to play World of Warcraft, not bloody or violent but there are many symbols in the game that's also present in witchcraft.

I've not been playing it for months now.

For what it's worth, I've only played Paladin, which is supposed to be a holy warrior and the names of its abilities were taken from Christianity like "lay of hands", "repentance" lol!
