  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Sabbath guarantees that God's people are never to be a slave race - despite what some entities have tried over history, and want to continue to do. Slaves don't rest; indeed, the Hebrews in Egypt never rested. Even in the foundations of everything, God's gesture to rest (at least) one day means that even He does not work all the time. Naturally, His people do not work all the time, and must have at least one day of rest in which they abide in Him. The Sabbath, therefore, was made for His creation since the beginning - not for us to do our own thing, but for us to treat it as a holy convocation.

It is described in celestial detail how, when and why to follow the Weekly Sabbath in the bible - specifically Exodus. The way to practice the other Sabbaths are in the bible, and their importance.

The Sabbath was supposed to be a gift to us - especially in the context of the Egyptian Hebrews. We were commanded to have one day (at least) to totally devote to Him - and rest from all servile work. It isnt supposed to be a burden.

Indeed "one day of rest" -- which is specifically "the 7th day" not merely "one day in 7". For as we see in Exodus 16 "tomorrow is the Sabbath" -- it is the 7th day.

What was the point of God repeating the 10 Commandments over and over to them, if he really wanted them to keep 9?
Why does it show during the 1000 yr millennium with Christ that we will be keeping it again along with the feats?

Mark 7

7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
8 For laying aside the Commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:
11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.
12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;
13 Making the Word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

James 2
8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture,You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well;
9 but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by THE Law as transgressors.
10 For whoever shall keep the whole Law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.
11 For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of THE Law. 12 So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty.

The utterly ironic twist to all of this is that those such as the SDA who are most vocal about Sabbath-keeping have transferred Protestant Sunday-keeping traditions to Saturday and are utterly convinced that these are what God commanded (i.e. Saturday is not a day of rest at all, but a day of religious activity).

Turns out - Genesis 2:1-3 and Exodus 20:8-11 and Leviticus 23:2-3, and Isaiah 66:23 came long before "Protestants" -- and we all know it.

It is "every Sabbath" that they come together for worship and Gospel preaching in Acts 18:4 for BOTH Jews AND Gentiles.

And we all know it.

Yes, so you have a thread of scripture on which to reject the idea of Sabbath rest and build upon it Protestant religious activity.

Yahweh already said the Sabbath is holy. Why would it become not holy for us?

Because we are not under the Sinai covenant found in Exodus 34:28, which was not given earlier as proven by Deuteronomy 5:1-3.

It is the sign of a now "obsolete" Sinai covenant (Hebrews 8:13), which Paul told the believers at Galatia to "cast out". (Galatians chapter 4).

Because we are not now come to Mount Sinai, but to the New Covenant of Mount Zion, instead.

Heb 12:18 For you have not come to the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and darkness and tempest,
Heb 12:19 and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so that those who heard it begged that the word should not be spoken to them anymore.
Heb 12:20 (For they could not endure what was commanded: "AND IF SO MUCH AS A BEAST TOUCHES THE MOUNTAIN, IT SHALL BE STONED OR SHOT WITH AN ARROW."
Heb 12:21 And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, "I AM EXCEEDINGLY AFRAID AND TREMBLING.")

Heb 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels,
Heb 12:23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,
Heb 12:24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.

Why would you need to keep the "sign" of an "obsolete" covenant, which Paul revealed as temporary in Galatians chapter 3?

Yes, so you have a thread of scripture on which to reject the idea of Sabbath rest.

Just not in real life.

In real life we have Exodus 20:8-11, Leviticus 23:2-3, Isaiah 66:23, Isaiah 56:1-8, Acts 18:4, etc.

Yes Jews and Gentiles were in the synagogue. No they were not gathered to hear Gospel preaching. Verse 6 is proof this assembly in Acts 18 was not that of Christians.

We who are believers and who are in Christ are not under that law, but that is a separate issue. Without judgment over it, we can still do the good that Yahweh had said was meant for doing. The Sabbath is holy, apart from what we do, and it is good for rest from work and coming to Yahweh our God more, and through Christ.

The Sabbath is holy, apart from what we do, and it is good for rest from work and coming to Yahweh our God more, and through Christ.

When God commanded Abraham to go to the land of Moriah and offer his son, his only son as a sacrifice, it was a shadow of something much more important.
It was but a shadow of God offering His Son, on Mount Moriah for the sins of the whole world.

Based on Colossians 2:16-17, the Sabbath day was but a shadow of Christ.

He is our Sabbath Rest.

Those who continue to focus on the day fail to understand that Christ is our rest every day of the week.

Is the Sabbath important. You better believe it. But it is the Son of God, instead of a day of the week that is our Sabbath under the New Covenant fulfilled in Blood on a wooden Cross.

This is why Paul compared the Sinai covenant to "bondage" in Galatians chapter 4 and compelled the Galatian believers to "cast out" the Sinai Covenant.

Paul called it a "ministry of death written on stones" in 2 Corinthians 3:6-8.

Paul reveals in Galatians 3:16-29 that the law was given 430 years "after" the promise made to Abraham "until" the Seed could come to whom the promise was made. Paul tells us the Sinai Covenant was temporary in nature.

In Hebrews 12:18-24, the writer is telling us to let go of the Sinai Covenant.

However, some of us continue to worship at Mount Sinai, instead of Mount Zion.

Yes, but, without believers being under law, the Sabbath is holy (separate), as Yahweh said, and it is good to rest on it, in Christ, just as we still should not kill, steal, or commit adultery.

We cannot ignore the temporary nature of the Sinai Covenant found in Galatians 3:16-29. Paul said the law was "added" 430 years "after" the promise made to Abraham "until" the seed could come to whom the promise was made. Chris is that seed. Their are two different sets of commandments in John 15:10. The commandments of Christ are found in 1 John chapter 3.

Col 2:16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths,
Col 2:17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

The Sabbath is important.
However, it is not a day of the week. It is Christ, who is our Sabbath rest.

What of the law was added? It was the system for priestly mediation with its sacrifices, the cleanings, and judicial consequences in judgment. Things for right and wrong did not change, so it is that what was said in the ten commandments didn't make something wrong that hadn't been wrong, it showed what was right for coming before Yahweh God. Even the Sabbath requirement was told to people of Israel before the commandments or the law were given. What is said of the Sabbath is that it is holy, so this is independent from what we do, it is meaning that it is separate for it to be remembered, and this was said to be for always.

And why not also say commandments of Christ are in the gospel accounts in the new testament of the Bible? They should not be superceded.

So don't judge ... as that is saying. I won't judge, either. This rest for then is just through Christ then, but yet still a day in the week, as Christ did say, the Sabbath was made for man, so that does not have it done away. It is even for what is coming in prophecy, as said in places such as Isaiah 56:6.

That is not what the text says.

Exo 34:28 So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.
(The Sinai Covenant is the ten commandments, written on the tablets of stone. The 600 plus other parts were to show how the children of Israel how they were to keep the 10 commandments.)

Deu 5:1
And Moses called all Israel, and said to them: "Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be careful to observe them.
Deu 5:2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
Deu 5:3 The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who are here today, all of us who are alive.
(The Sinai Covenant was not given earlier.)

2Co 3:6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
2Co 3:7 But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away,
2Co 3:8 how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious?

Above Paul contrasts the New Covenant made at Calvary with the ministry of death written on stones, which is the 10 commandments.

We are not come to Mount Sinai, but to the New Covenant of Mount Zion.

The Old Covenant given at Mount Sinai is finished, having been made "obsolete" by the New Covenant, written in Blood on a wooden Cross.(Hebrews 8:13)

Hi BABerean, why is it that anyone would want to put anyone under any part of the old covenant? None of us were born under that covenant and most of us are not Jews who fail to accept Jesus and His covenant for all mankind. Is it because they cannot comprehend why Jesus would mediate a new covenant? Do their Bibles end at Malachi? It really amazes me that some are so conditioned that they will not accept or even consider the verses you continuously post. Maybe they are so bent on getting their propaganda out there that they refuse to read the real truth from the New Testament. We can lead a horse to water...........

The excuses that some have made are so shallow. Some believe that they are under Torah and have to observe feast days, but as to the remainder of the book of the law they just pick and choose the laws that suit them.

Brother Bob,

The battle between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant began in Acts chapter 15 and continues to this day.

The books of Galatians and Hebrews were specifically written to address the tremendous error of attempting to merge the two covenants.

The strategy today seems to be to claim that the New Covenant is really just a "New Administration" of the Old Covenant.

Those who claim they are keeping the Sabbath know in their hearts that they really are not.

We are fighting the same battle that Paul fought.
It is a battle for the Gospel itself.
Some are attempting to save themselves through their own works.

All we can do is use God's Word to show the truth.
There are others watching who really want the truth.
Some of the others will never admit that they have been wrong. Pride is a powerful force.

Paul also became very frustrated at times, as revealed by the following words...

Gal 5:12 I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves!

Php 3:2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation!
Php 3:3 For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh,

The deal about what is going here is a war for your soul. Our enemy comes as an angel of light.

Pay real close attention to Gal 5:1-6.

1Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

2Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. 3For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. 4Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. 5For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 6For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

They are trying to get people to trade their salvation for the law which only brings condemnation and death.

One should notice they only like parts of Scripture. For instance event he words of Jesus are hated by them. Perfect example is Jn 14:15 and 15:10. The first is easily distorted to mean the 10 Cs while 15:10 can not be twisted to their liking. In fact one of them asked where I got the verse. They had never heard of it. Notice their use of the word "you." Them it means all mankind while the rules of English will not allow that. The word "you" in English is always limited.
