  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

5 Challenges to Trump's Wall

Physical challenges; the political/economic ones are another kettle of fish.

5 challenges Trump may face building a border wall

Their bullet points; my commentary.

1. The terrain is very rough in some areas

Anywhere Trump can't build a wall easily is going to add delays and expenses... anywhere he can't build it at all is going to be a gap which needs to be covered... somehow.

2. Unlike the Western border states, most of Texas is privately owned

Trump's no stranger to "eminent domain," so let's see how Texas reacts to being on the wrong end of it from President Trump.

3. Most of the border is natural, but a human-made barrier is not

Just going to build a wall along the river, eh? Have we forgotten that rivers flood?

4. Surveillance makes the barrier effective

Obvious, really -- 2,000 miles of wall is going to require 2,000 miles of 24/7 surveillance... will Mexico be paying for that, too? Another Spanish I.O.U. in Trump's handwriting?

5. Migrants are determined and often have few options

Having already established that a wall is not the solution to the majority of our illegal immigration woes, Trump seems to be relying heavily on the "intimidation factor" in it -- but considering that many illegal border crossers are either seriously desperate to get away from something, or worse, drug cartel mal hombres, there's very little to be intimidated by.

And let's not forget that Trumps economic policies have the potential to damage the Mexican economy forcing millions more Mexicans to head north looking for work.

Not necessarily... I already posted a thread that shows that it's most likely going to be Mexican construction companies building the wall... after all, they're closer to the site, and they work cheaper.

Mexico's going to build a wall and make America pay for it.

Nothing like a massive construction project to jump-start the local economy, eh?

6. And the very well financed Cartels will compromise any physical wall in a matter of weeks, if not sooner.

Please -- between the bribery and/or intimidation of the work crews, they'll have their tunnels built before the cement sets.

Quite aware. Are you aware of the cost of that fencing? And how utterly ineffective it is without constant patrols?
ARe you aware of how much it costs to provide medical services and education to illegal immigrants? The fence in California is credited with reducing illegal crossings by 95%

Doubt all you want, but when the Donald decides to accomplish a task and tells the World he is going to build a fence, with gates, you better bet it will be done.

When the wall is built it will have the latest surveillance devices and the manpower to keep all the drugs and druggies from the continuous harm they are now doing to our young people. You also better bet that those who pass through the gates are needed in our country and are thoroughly vetted.

Mexico will still supply our country with goods, but our country will apply tariffs on goods that we too can and will produce.

We all have sympathy for the poor and downtrodden and when thousand of people invade our borders illegally many end up in ghettos, and end up being a burden on our economy. are you personally doing anything to relieve their condition?

Doubt all you want, illegal immigration has to stop. Our new President is the man who will do it. We all need to support him in doing what is right and good for the United States of America. America and Americans first.

Honestly, I think the fence is our responsibility....but it is not our responsibility to house, educate, or give medical care to illegal non-citizens.

Gotta find them first, chief.

Then you've got to detain them, try them, give them due process, and then move them... all at your expense, all while they contribute nothing.

Well, I can find a lot of them...check every public school in Texas. Mexico deports their illegals in 72 hours.

To a certain degree I find a lot of this ironic, as many of the families saying this had the luxury of their ancestors coming over in droves when immigration only turned away ~2% of people who tried to come in. Now that they have theirs they want to stop so many others from trying to achieve the same dream for them and their children.

I want border security, but that is mainly to keep criminals and terrorists out. It doesn't make much sense to have the TSA groping me every time i want to get on a plane when someone can just walk into the country.

The wall is going to take a while. In order to be built in nearly the time frame Trump desires, congress would have to fast track funding. the ~$25 billion needed isn't something Congress is going to be wanting to cough up easily. then you have all the eminent domain issues. That can get tied up in court for years.

He would probably be better off building it in sections, starting with large tracks that aren't on private land, are easy to construct on, and are hot spots for crossings. Doing this while hiring more border patrol would help security and give time to shore the rest of the funding and hash out the domain issues.

As for tariffs, they are a terrible idea. It could spark trade wars and greatly damage the economy, and if it hits mexico even harder we could end up with more illegals flooding over.

Do you even have any idea what the immigrations laws were? They had to have a citizen sponsor who would vouch for them and be legally responsible for them. They had to have a job and a place to live already lined up. They had to have perfect health (many family members were sent back home if they didn't pass the physical. It wasn't easy to immigrate but thousands still did legally. If your number of 2% is correct, maybe it was because most knew the rules and were prepared to meet the immigration laws and do it legally before they got on the ship.

So basically, we shouldn't build a wall or fence and protect our border because it is hard to do and mean to the Mexicans?

You didn't need a sponsor, you just needed to not have a criminal history, be sick or be considered an anarchist. Jobs were not a problem, as companies would pick up the immigrants immediately, some even recruited them in their own home countries. This was part of the reason for backlash against Italian and Irish immigrants. They came in huge numbers and took many jobs at lower wages.

I'm not sure what the OPs motivation is, but my point with a list like this is to temper people's expectations. The wall is coming, but it may take a loooong time. And how effective it is, may leave some disappointed.
