  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

One central motif of the novel is that all actions have consequences, and that it is impossible for an individual to stand aloof and be a mere observer of life, as Jack tries to do (first as a graduate student doing historical research and later as a wisecracking newspaperman)
I watch movies and read literature because they can fill the gaps that religion seems to miss or not directly spell out.
For me, this is a very important theme. I have often chosen to be an outsider or spectator in life, instead of taking life full on as a 100% participant. Afraid of criticism, failure and disappointment, I have frequently chosen the apparent softer route. And maybe that is what the narrow gate means too. Choose life 100%, don't go in half-hearted, otherwise you'll end up with half-hearted answers to life. My parents chose to have seven kids, despite the economic challenges. How brave is that! And guess what? They lived a life that is full!

I read the novel many years ago, and am not sure if I saw the movie. I have tried at times to stay removed from current events but it never lasts long. One "nice" aspect of this forum is that it gives me an outlet for my questions and views on religion, people, society, the economy, etc. Looking at history, one can see that without someone, or some group, challenging accepted wisdom or the status quo, a lot of evils just continue on and even increase, while "good" does not happen.
