  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I’m not sure if he preaches the entire message of the gospel or just the attractive parts of it, but one thing he did say: He believes Jesus is the only path to God but there are many paths to Jesus.

Nothing wrong with that.

Truly well said, Pastor Joel Osteen concentrates on the positive......
engages in very little accusation of others........
after a number of years the Apostle Paul learned to take a similar
approach to his mission......

Phl 4:8

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things arehonest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

The primary problem with Osteen is that he preaches Word of Faith gospel, also called Positive Confession and Prosperity (Health and Wealth, or "name it and claim it") Gospel. While it appears to be a positive and uplifting message, it is actually harmful.

The man credited with beginning the Word of Faith movement is E.W. Kenyon. His disciple was Kenneth Hagin, whose disciple is Kenneth Copeland.

And overview of this errant theology can be found here.

I suggest that you are misinterpreting this. St. Paul was not like, and never was like, Osteen or the Word of Faith people. He preached the bare and unabashed truth, which is why he was beheaded because he upset so many people. Osteen would never be beheaded as he never wants to step on toes.

This verse is about moral virtue. As mention in the Ignatius Study Bible commentary:"[Paul] challenges us to ponder all that is virtuous in order to crowd every impure and unworthy thought out of our minds."

In the Council document, Apostolicam actuositatem, 14, it says of Phil 4:8: "Catholics should strive to cooperate with all men of good will in the promotion of all that is true, just, holy, all that is worthy of love."
