  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I feel i must celebrate the Sabbath but i cant drink wine due to past addiction problems would grape juice do ?

I never drink wine - always grape juice.

The Passover - (the first Communion service) was part of the feast of unleavened bread and there would be no brewer's yeast - and no bread yeast at all in the house. They were drinking Grape Juice.

So then you are celebrating as did Christ and his disciples when you avoid the fermented beverages at Communion service - the Lord's table.

there is only me in the house my husband is uninterested in any religion he always been like that so there is only me so am unsure if am allowed to say the blessing for the wine and other male blessings of the Sabbath etc
at the moment my husband takes me to church as i am unable to go there on my own due to how bad my mental health is
i am at a church where people are understanding about my mental health and i have support there

"There is neither Jew nor Greek - male nor female" in the Gospel dispensation according to Paul. You are free to worship the Lord - read 1 Corinthians 11 about the communion service - and enjoy worship.

Jesus healed on the Sabbath and was opposed by the religious establishment. He and his disciples picked grain on the Sabbath and were opposed. In modern Israel most businesses were closed during Sabbath. If one does not obey the Sabbath laws, one might be evicted from a kibbutz or excluded from synagogues. A son or daughter violating Sabbath laws might be disinherited. Couples divorced over differences of religious opinion.

An American named John Fulton published an account of a visit to Safed in Galilee during 1910, "Palestine the Holy Land," from pages 311-312.

Safed ... is occupied by a Jewish colony founded not later than the sixteenth century. It is also the seat of a celebrated school of rabbinical learning, and besides the schools which were originally taught by famous Spanish rabbis, it once had eighteen synagogues. Half of the present population of Safed -- which is about 25,000 souls -- are Jews. They are punctilious sticklers for the law; and Dr. Thomson says that "their social institutions and manners comprise a grotesque mingling of filth and finery, Pharisaic self righteousness and Sadduceean license. A Jew on the Sabbath Day must not carry even so much as a pocket handkerchief except within the walls of a city. If there are no walls it follows, according to their logic, that he must not carry it at all. To avoid this difficulty here in Safed they resorted to what they called Eruv. Poles were set up at the ends of streets, and strings stretched from one end to the other. Those strings represented a wall, and a conscientious Jew could carry his handkerchief anywhere within their limits." It was among just such superstitious punctilios that our Lord came preaching the gospel of liberty.

In modern Israel most businesses were closed during Sabbath.
Most stores are open from Sunday to Thursday between 9:00 in the morning and 7:00 in the evening. Stores that close for a break between 2:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon have a sign with their hours posted on the door. In some cities, stores are closed on Tuesday afternoons.

Stores close at midday on Friday and open again on Sunday morning. Stores close in mid afternoon on the eve of Jewish holidays and remain closed throughout the holiday. Shopping centers that do not cater to the religious population are open on Saturdays and others open on Saturday night or holiday nights to accommodate moviegoers. Coffee houses and restaurants that do not serve kosher food usually remain open on Saturdays.

Moslem-owned businesses usually close on Fridays, which is the Sabbath day for the Moslem community, and Christian-owned businesses are closed on Sundays.

A Jew on the Sabbath Day must not carry even so much as a pocket handkerchief except within the walls of a city. If there are no walls it follows, according to their logic, that he must not carry it at all. To avoid this difficulty here in Safed they resorted to what they called Eruv. Strings, grape juice and bread can all represent something.

I remember the some gas stations, hospitals and Ben Gurion airport in Israel are open seven days. The army is ready to mobilize anytime. I met a rabbi living in the United States who was tormented by the guilt of having to drive his wife to a hospital on the Sabbath in order for her baby to be delivered. After that they moved to within walking distance to a hospital.

Jesus taught us we may decide what we should do on Sabbath, or when we need rest. Others should not make the decision for us.

I don't believe that since to save a life, it is permitted to break Shabbat. Also, where did Yeshua say that?

The Lord of the Sabbath (World English Bible)

Mark 2:23 It happened that he was going on the Sabbath day through the grain fields, and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, "Behold, why do they do that which is not lawful on the Sabbath day?" 25 He said to them, "Did you never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry—he, and those who were with him? 26 How he entered into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the show bread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and gave also to those who were with him?" 27 He said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath" 28 Therefore the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath."

You may determine what you want to do on the Sabbath. It is legal to rest on Saturday or to work on Saturday.

Christ perfectly kept the LAW of God - and was sinless.

"Sin IS transgression of the LAW" 1 John 3:4 -- even in the NT.

The traditions of men would often condemn Christ as a Law breaker - but Christ repeatedly upheld the actual scriptures - while condemning man-made traditions that opposed it.

Thus even in the New Covenant "I will write My LAW on their heart and mind" Jer 31:31-33

Paul says that even after the cross - that same LAW condemns all mankind until they choose to accept the Gospel - Romans 3:19-21

Saving a life on Shabbat does not break Shabbat even if it requires work on Shabbat. The principle is found in John 7:21-24. Even though work was required to circumcise a child, it was permissible on Shabbat so that the Law of Moses not be broken. Not only was the circumcision performed without incurring guilt through sin, but doing it on Shabbat incurred no guilt either.

It was not circumcision taking precedence over the Sabbath, but health and life taking precedence over both. Conducting the circumcision as Yahweh commanded would prevent death and allow the child to keep the Sabbath all the days of his life. Both commandments remain unbroken. If work is permitted to circumcise one part of the body on Shabbat, then surely working to save the entire body would be permissible as well.

If you cannot believe scripture, believe the U.S. legal system. This place goes 24/7 whether you think it is legal or not.

Christ points out that the Jews themselves allowed humanitarian aid for both people and animals on the Sabbath. The Jews "invented" the rule that reaching out to eat grain as you passed through a field of it - was work - but that is not the Bible definition of it and no OT text forbade it.

My point was that Yeshua never said this, YOU did...

I was reading again the "Book of Jubilees" and one of the interesting statements is that the Sabbath is kept by angels in heaven. My mind went to the question about how people will be keeping the Sabbath come the millennium and in heaven. Sounds like Sabbath keeping is in the cycle not in the time frame of our sun cycle.

In the conflicts and confusion regarding the Sabbath and its keeping come various understandings. Rest, ironically, is an activity that must be prepared for and then pursued as any woman of the house can attest to. The purpose of Sabbath, however, is not simply to rejuvenate yourself so you can produce more during the rest of the week. Nor, is Sabbath the simple pursuit of sleep and pleasure. Sabbath rest is found in Him..

Although Sabbath rest receives a much smaller amount of time than the work week, it is a necessary counterbalance so that the rest of your work can be good and beneficial. In order to keep the Sabbath, the work week must circle around and prepare for its rest.

To think of it another way, God liberated his people when they were slaves in Egypt, and in Deuteronomy 5:12–15, God ties the Sabbath to freedom from slavery. Anyone who overworks is really a slave. Anyone who cannot rest from work is a slave in any example be it a need for success, from a buy and sell materialistic culture driven artificial needs, to exploitative employers who can not given their workers time off, etc etc. These slave masters will abuse you if you are not disciplined in the practice of Sabbath rest. In fact, you would not realize their entrapment if it wasn't for the Sabbath. Sabbath is a declaration of freedom.

Yeshua urges us, Matt 11:28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

One of the great blessings of the gospel is that He gives you rest that no one else will or can. His rest goes through to the soul. He is Lord of our Sabbath. When God gave these commandments, the Hebrews had been working from sunup to sundown, but the gift of the Sabbath was to stop working at sundown on Friday and rest until sundown on Saturday. If your Sabbath time is very busy and filled with scheduled Sabbath activities, it will not be beneficial like God intended. Rigidly working on a Sabbath schedule, defeats the purpose of what rest can bring.
