That's the difference between the Old Covenant and the new. God himself does not change. But he does operate in different manners. The OT has a lot of examples of that. God didn't do the same thing all the time. He changed his methods at different times. Through Christ he offered a New Covenant to replace the old. The old had its purpose and was fulfilled by Jesus. Jesus being God proclaimed this new covenant. Remember "all the old things have passed away, behold all things,are made new." Belief in Jesus puts us into the new covenant. A new way of doing things.Keep in mind in the Old Testament, God did ask to kill or maim in his name, and if Jesus is God, who is supposed to be the same forever, then that would not change. If Jesus is God, it would follow that he has God's same views. Though as the differences in our posts show, God in the Old Testament and Jesus in the New have different views in that regard.
