  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As well as Anthony De Mello, there are other controversial catholics. Seems they test the boundaries. Some are coming under the microscope of the CDF, (Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith) I'll include some clips here of People like James Finley, Richard Rohr and Thomas Keating.
Are these people off track? Do they have a sinister, heretical agenda? Or are they heroic, courageous and following a well-formed Christian Catholic conscience? That is an ongoing dilemma for me.

There was a Brazilian priest who advocated for sex whenever possible, thought nothing wrong of adultery. Though, he was defrocked and excommunicated.

that is beyond controversial ! :)

Joan Chittister, OSB has some controversial opinions, primarily due to her feminism.

I've read several of her books. She writes beautifully about prayer and monastic life. She opposes the hierarchical, top-down leadership of the Church.

She has been in leadership positions in her congregation, her order, and the LCWR, all at a very early age. I think that many American sisters regard her as an elder stateswoman for women religious.

I get Richard Rohr's enewsletter. I know a little about the Enneagram, enough to know that I'm a 7, but I haven't found that knowledge gave me unusual insights about myself or the other people in my life. I find some of Rohr's insights inspiring and some not especially relevant.

I am familiar with Rohr and Keating but not Finley. So I checked his website. He offers a variety of retreat topics, focusing on contemplation. He does sessions on St. John of the Cross, Julian of Norwich, Thomas Merton and Meister Eckhart. I am in the midst of an Eckhart book right now. He had to defend himself against accusations of heresy some 800 years ago, and today he is quoted in homilies and spiritual writings.

Another controversial Catholic whose writing really speaks to me is Louis Evely, who was popular in the 1950's and 60's. Some of his stuff may be available in electronic format; worth checking out.
