Because addiction is characterized by nedd while desire is characterized by want.

One is a chemical dependency.

Addictions come in different forms.

There is physical addiction and there is psychological addiction. Binge drinkers tend to be psychologically addicted, constant drinkers tend to be physically addicted. Both, are real addictions.

We're not concerned with them. We're concerned with the non-addict drunkards.

You still have not demonstrated, how you tell the difference (with any level of reliability) between a non-addict drunkard and the addicted drunkard.

You do acknowledge, there are both physical and psychological addictions, correct?

That's because it isn't necessary.

Yes, but that is irrelivant.

Demonstrating that there is a difference between addict and non-addict. It is obvious that not all drunkards are addicts.

If it is obvious, please demonstrate how you objectively determine, whether someone has an addiction; either physical or psychological or whether no addiction is present?

Have you never been to college? I mean, do you disagree? Because we are wasting time and words.

I have an advanced degree, so yes, I have seen plenty of college. I was a division one college athlete as well, so I have seen plenty of partying.

Again, if it is so easy to separate out these groups with reliability, how do you do it?

It doesn't need to be reliable right now. First we want the core concept. Now we compare it to worship.

Hi all

I'm new to the group.

My 2 cents - idols can be anything that comes before God in your life. Money, fame, etc. can all be idols if they are more important to you than God.

That's cool. We must then see how people feel and act regarding them to understand the nature of worship.

Just a note to the OP - alcoholism comes in both varieties, daily use or weekend bingeing. They're both alcoholism. I suspect you think that the weekend party drinker is not an alcoholic? If so, you'd be wrong.

This is the medico-psych perspective, by the way. Not the anecdotal perspective.

I would submit that anything non-essential and material, when it becomes overweeningly important, is an idol. Having a well kept house, nice furniture, a new car, a weed-free lawn, nice clothes, etc. Oddly, this appears to be significant problem amongst conservative theists.

We're not even talking about that.
