• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You dislike a form of godliness that many religious people observe.

To say that I share the sentiment would be an understatement.

I have never been fond of cheap imitations, whatever form they take.

I like the robes, the incense, the hymns, and the carols :) But I agree entirely, a spoken English mass is a very poor substitute for a fully sung Latin mass.
I'd probably like it if I went now (especially if they went back to the old style); it was only being obliged to go that made it eventually pall.

I can understand that. I was raised without religion or atheism, so visits to churches/temples/mosques etc have been at my own volition, and mostly enjoyable. Apart from Protestant churches ... which I find deeply creepy. I have a soft spot for Catholic high mass, Thai Buddhist services, and Mosque prayers. Anything in which my heathen presence is welcome and unquestioned, and in which there is plenty of textured ritual.

Thank you for this. It is very insightful.

I suggest a better way. If you want to know the truth, you don't have to wait for the publication of the findings of neuroscientists.
Why not? Will your assertions not be validated by their findings?
God loves you and wants you to experience the joy and peace and assurance and hope that will sustain you as you go through life. He wants the best for you and is able to bring it about if that is what you want.
Proselytizing is inappropriate for this forum. If you care.
Read the gospels as if God were speaking directly to you, and find yourself in what they say.
This sounds like an exercise in self-deception.

As much as I would like to get free stuff, I would not write letters to Santa as if he is real.
In Christ, you will find the answers you seek.
I seek an accurate description of reality. Will I get that from someone that has been dead for 2000 years, if he existed at all?

I have found it trustworthy, not because it says it is, but because I tried it, many years ago, and over the years since it has been a source of inspiration, instruction, and hope.

I like your avatar by the way. I am sure Dr. Craig would be tickled to death by the fact that you have a picture of him as your avatar. ☺

And if they told you that the scripture is a lie, placed there by Satan to fool mankind? Again, how would you know who to trust?

You don't ... at least in the sense I expect you're asking.

The being doesn't have to be ghostly, however. The same question can be applied to humans.

None of which speaks to it being an accurate description of reality.

He does look rather silly, doesn't he? :)

I think it is where it makes claims about reality. I have good reasons to think it is and have none to think it isn't.

I wouldn't say silly. Although I do think he can be quite funny at times when debating or teaching when he uses illustrations to show how ridiculous some arguments are.

Of course. Is that not what every religionist says about their particular religion?

Indeed.

I suppose the irony is lost on you at this point.;)

I can agree with that. I think that is true of everyone though, religious or not.

And I think a great many people like yourself are simply deceived and are wrong even though they think they are right. You probably think the same of me and others who share views dissimilar to yours.

You think Craig's arguments are ridiculous. I have known this for quite some time. But you have not made even the first step in showing that they are not good arguments. The only thing therefore that I see ironic is you thinking that irony would be lost on me.

Everything you said.

Cool :)

Then I suspect you may have enjoyed the bit about being raised neither religious nor atheist, because my affection for some religious observance isn't particularly interesting. I'm assuming you do understand what 'neither god nor no god' means, in practice? It's not uncommon, where I live, to see parents raise kids without mention of religion one way or another. Neither for nor against. To give you more fuel for your bonfire, once we were at the age of reason (8 - 10), our parents introduced us to comparative religion. ie, gave us an overview of various faiths, even handedly.

.

Except that, there is considerable evidence for many things theorised by science, which are dismissed by religionists. And there is zero evidence for supernatural claims made by religionists. You're not even on the same playing field, much less an even one.

Is that supposed to be a problem for me?

I am a Christian and claim Jesus rose bodily from the tomb He was buried in on the Sunday following His crucifixion. This was a supernatural event and there is evidence that it happened. Check out N.T. Wright's work on the subject for starters.
