  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

God waits for people to cry out to Him for help. At the end of WW2 people had seen a lot of suffering and they were crying out to God at that point in time. There was a lot of break through in research and a lot of lives were saved. By comparison the world today is calm and peaceful. We do not see massive destruction where millions of people are destroyed. Remember that science created ways to destroy all those people. Now people tend to want to use science more for good then evil. Even science has found a way to sustain more people today then has ever lived before. Although many believe this will not last for long. We will have one last world war and then 1,000 years of peace.

So all the millions of people who must have prayed and pleaded to heal their loved one with polio or other terrible diseases don't count as crying out for help?

God will not take the credit for the mess that man and the devil made out of this world. Although Jesus died for the sin of mankind so that we could be forgiven and receive eternal life. God established law and for those who violate that law then there will be consequences. When was the last time someone got away with breaking the law of gravity? Only with God He waits for people to complete their sin and then they will reap what they sow. People do not sow and reap in the same season.

It is rather amazing how some give their God credit only for the good when it is rather obvious that he has to be responsible for the bad in the world too.

I have said a million, billion, quadrillion times there is no conflict between science and religion.

And I've told you a million times not to exaggerate!

True science and true religion are 100% compatible. There just so happens to be false religion and false science out there.
Can you give some examples of false science?

Bill Nye is point blank anti Creationism. Yet when you listen to what he says, he admits he is against his understanding of Creationism.
Bill Nye is messed up.

Like any scientist that tries to combat the Sword with a clipboard.

The son that is doing college right now is trying to decide between computer engineering and computer science so I have a list of all the classes he will have to take for both of those degrees. He has already been taking them in High School otherwise it would have taken him five years to get though college but now it will take more like three or four. My brother was like that. He did college in three years and graduate school in three years and NONE of them got any training in evolution other then the little bit that was required in High School. Back when I took biology evolutionary theory was not even a part of it and my Biology teacher was a graduate of Harvard University.

Well your biology teacher having gone to Harvard doesn't mean all that much. My aunt is a Duke graduate but when she was w Teach for America she said she felt more like a trained monkey lots of the time cause she was only allowed to teach from workbooks they gave her. It was super frustrating. For real it's a shame your sons haven't gotten a stronger education in biology. Idk what to say. I am just super grateful my school is doing a much better job giving us a well rounded science education. Everybody is required to take at least 1 biology class & it actually teaches biology so yeah of course evolution is taught in depth. Like I said b4 it's in other classes too. Like a huge part of astronomy was about stellar evolution.

Just read your post above where you said you worked in construction for 50 yrs. How old are you? That could be why you didn't get a strong education in evolution when you were young. Idk.

Good job on denying history.

The focus on Galileo was directly related to his views being in contrast with the christian doctrine of the time.

In fact, it took many many years before the vatican officially recognised that yes, the earth orbits the sun and not the other way round.

The Inquisition started investigations concerning Galileo's theories headed by Cardinal Robertus Bellarminus and gave Gallileo an offical "warning" to stop defending his theories publicly in 1616. In that same year, they banned the works of Foscarini and started reviewing Copernicus. In 1620, they came with 10 "corrections" to Copernicus' works. The book could no longer be sold or printed without those 10 "corrections".

At first Galileo complied with the "warning", but several yeas later again started to engage the whole heliocentrism vs geocentrism debate through one of his students.

In 1624, Galileo received permission of the pope to write a new book in which he was allowed to again theorize about heliocentrism - with emphasis on the word "theorize". As in: it was forbidden to talk about it as if it was a fact.

He completed this book in 1632, but the inquisition forced him to change the title.
He was forced to remove all hints about the tides from the titled, because he had used the concept of tides to previously theorize that the earth wasn't stationary, for which he received the "warning" in 1616.

The only reason why the book was allowed to be printed, is because he included in the prelude that "all of which follows is only hypothesis". Without mentioning that, the book couldn't be printed.

The book was written in the form of a dialogue between 3 people. At the end of the book, he attributed a few statements of the pope to one of the people that clearly lost the argument. This was Galileo's way of saying that the church's position in the helio- geocentrism debate was incorrect. This infuriated the pope so he ordered another investigation by the inquisition, which resulted in his house arrest.

And, of all things, in 1992 the Pope issued an apology for how Galileo was treated. In other words: the vatican itself admits it. Why can't you?
I'm not a fan of the Catholic church which Galileo was part of himself. Galileo was warned not to be dogmatic about heliocentric since the science at the time went against it. He made the pope, who like his idea, look like a fool in his book which got him into trouble.
It's was Isaac Newton (a fundamentalist) who really sold heliocentric with his calculus. It was years later after Isaac that the strong evidence the support heliocentric was seen.

The Church didn't have as much clout to suppress it as they once did.

That is right Joshua. The people who do believe that run into hundreds of millions. Those that don't run into hundreds of thousands. Funny how atheists conveniently ignore facts like that.
What???

More people believe in astrology than believe in christianity, so I guess that makes astrology correct, right?

I do not understand what you point is. For the saved and the redeemed God will cause all things to work out for the best. For the unsaved and those who live in rebellion then life for them goes from bad to worse. I can gave my life with God simply based on if my life is getting better or worse. If my life is getting better then I know I am living a life that is well pleasing to God. If life is getting worst then I know that I am living in rebellion and need to bring my life into obedience to God.

God accepts full responsibility for the good and the evil that is in the world. For those who walk with God He will cause all things to work out for the best for them. If people are living in rebellion then for them life will continue to go from bad to worse.

Yes, a good example of false science is a McDonald's commerical that says McDonald's food is healthy and good for you. Nothing could be further from the truth. Science itself tells on itself. There is good science to show us the bad science. Perhaps science monitors itself better then religion does.

That's certainly not a very loving view of God, Joshua 19. I understand the Bible as saying God loves everyone, not just the elect. Your post reminded me of the Puritan minister Richard Baxter, who argued we should not help the poor, as they are reprobate and so God wants them to suffer that way. It's that kind of insensitive attitude that has alienated many from the church. For me, I believe God is truly loving, loves everyone, and seeks to help everyone live a more beautiful life. I also resist any form of Christian Imperialism, the notion that only Bible-believing Christians are saved. That notion, though quite popular, allows faith to collapse into mere consent to doctrine. It is more important to God what dogmas you hold than how you live. Because I see God as loving and l;ur9ing us to a better world, I think it is much more important to God how we live than what our religious beliefs are.

I was hoping that you could find something that was published in a peer-reviewed journal or in a book written by a professional scientist. Was the McDonald's commercial written by a professional scientist?

I am 60 something. At my age you only count birthdays every 10 years. One of my first jobs when I was 15 was remodeling a run down Hotel to convert it into sleeping rooms for homeless drunks. That was interesting because we still had the coal furnace that needed coal shoveled into the feeder. Also that was before drywall so all the plaster had to be repaired the old fashion way. They use to build things to last for 100 years back after WW1. Now they do not try to fix up the old building so much as they want to tear them down and start all over again.
