  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As Dr. Lawrence Principe notes, "The idea that scientific and religious camps have historically been separate and antagonistic is rejected by all modern historians of science."

David gives just a few example of quotes given throughout the centuries from different faith , Christians, Deist and atheist. All quotes are religious.

If you accept the principle asserted in these quotations, why do you maintain that what scientists (most of whom are or were Christians) have found about the age of the Universe and the solar system, and about the evolution of living things, is false and must be rejected in favour of a particular interpretation of the Bible?

He's really not a science guy.
That is interesting that he does not have any actual training in science. He is pretty much just as actor. Of course he works for PBS and his job is to get children and young people interested in Science. Perhaps he is acting as a Pit Bull for PBS when he gets himself into controversy that they would not want to get involved in sense they are supported by contributions.

The only thing we'd have to give up us the delusion the God did it...
I can name that tune in two notes: double standard. If you live by the sword you have to be prepared to die by the sword. You are going to have to live by your own standard. You can not just impose your standard on others and not expect to live by it yourself. That is just the way the laws of the universe work. As you judge you will be judged. The very same judgement you impose on others is the judgement you will be given.

Science had made sure nobody else ever gets Polio again... not too shabby...
That is a feather in their cap to be sure but in all things we should give Honor and Glory to God. He is the one that is doing a work of restoration in this world. That is why Jesus died in our place at Calvary so that we can have life.

No actual training in science? lol.. "just an actor" ??

The reason why guys like Nye and Tyson do more work as actors than actual scientists is because most scientists are not all that charismatic, and it takes a certain amount of charisma to bring science to the masses through entertainment. So, when media producers find someone who is unusually personable in their field, sometimes they get luck enough to entice them into the entertainment industry where their talents can do more for science than the actual scientific work they do.

if you go back to the 1600s you will find that the church was the instigators of learning as they launched most of the universities in those days.

I think most folks already know that, & it doesn't change the truth of what I said at all. Religion has advanced knowledge but it's also held it back at times.

It's amazing how many back flips you can do to justify your beliefs. I thought you rejected evolution.
I do not reject evolution. I have said a million, billion, quadrillion times there is no conflict between science and religion. None, zip, zero. What part of nothing do you have trouble understanding. True science and true religion are 100% compatible. There just so happens to be false religion and false science out there. In fact the whole aim and purpose of science is to find the truth and eliminate the false. Religion also claims a zeal for the truth.

mechanical engineering is math, not science. You do not study evolution at all when you study mechanical engineering. He can go on TV and be a science guy because he is an actor following a script. My sister was a teacher at a jr college for most of her life. She said if you want to teach then you only have to keep one chapter ahead of the class. That is all a teacher has to do is teach the text book. In a lot of countries the students do not even have a text book. They can not afford the text book. The only person with a book is the teacher.

The more education one has, the less chance they believe what you state above.
So you admit then that the more formal education they have the more they are brain washed.

In response to Joshua's quote above:

Actually, you might be mistaken on this. I sincerely believe you are over-estimating the educational level of the general population of the USA.
The NSF (the same guys who just found gravity waves) did a survey a few years back and found that a full 25% of Americans still think the sun revolves around the earth.
Here is the link:
http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...ink-the-sun-goes-around-the-earth-survey-says

So when joshua says there's a bunch of idiots out there who think god created the earth 10,000 years ago, don't be so quick to dismiss it.

Hey Joshua,, you might want to take a picture of this post of mine.. its not often I defend you eh? LOL

Why would you manipulate what he just wrote like that? You're not helping Christians to look any better, mister.

ROFLMAO.. dude.. sometimes you should probably think about what you post before you hit the little "POST REPLY" button..
Both my sons are engineering students so I know what classes they are taking. I know how much they have studied evolution: not much.

You have this habit of creating strawman and putting words in people's mouths. Trust me, you are doing yourself no favors.

I tend to think, the more education, the more people learn.

Of course, if what others learn disagrees with you, they must be brain washed, correct?
