  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Of course... did you forget that I don't actually believe this nonsense ever happened?

You did, didn't you?
I'm just wondering what you tell your students who ask you what the "sons of God" are?

You asked me as a literature professor. I answered as a literature professor.

If a student asks, I preface that with "in my professional opinion..."

And how do you answer a student if they ask: What is a siren?

"I believe it's a mythological creature thought to lure Greek sailors to their deaths with its hypnotic singing."

Any other mythical creatures you want to discuss?

There was no rain, the earth was humid and warm. At night there was always a heavy dew. Also, evidence from encapsulated bubbles in amber have shown that the atmospheric conditions were much different. Higher O2 levels and higher barometric pressure...why do we just assume that everything 6000 years ago was exactly the same as it is today?

Because the bubbles aren't from 6,000 years ago, they're from millions of years ago.

12 As a sign of this everlasting covenant which I am making with you and with all living beings, 13 I am putting my bow (rainbow) in the clouds. It will be the sign of my covenant with the world. 14 Whenever I cover the sky with clouds and the rainbow appears, 15 I will remember my promise to you . . .

Why does God need a reminder of his promise? If there were no rainbows, would the all-knowing being forget and flood the world again?

If it had not rained until after the deluge then rainbows "in the cloud," would be a new phenomena.

Not nescessarily. Rainbows can form in clear conditions. It's rare, but it does happen.

They would not have existed pre-deluge since they are created by the refraction of light passing through suspended water (water drops).

The fact that rainbows are typically seen AFTER it rains should tell you what's wrong with this.

It seems likely that God used the new phenomena known as rainbows as a 'reminder' to both him

Again, why would God need a reminder? If he's all-knowing, he shouldn't be able to forget things.

He didn't turn the other cheek? hmm...
Well, if that's the only response you have.......you don't understand the difference between the conflict of a one man with another, as the teaching indicates, and the contamination of all of human kind with the survival of a pure line of human DNA at stake.

But, again, you said that Noah preached and tried to warn people of what was coming, and that he would've let people on board if he believed them. So, what if one of those impure humans had believed him and repented? Wouldn't Noah have let him on board?

A myth, of course.
A myth that constructed the stone at Baalbeck or stone of the pregnant woman, the sturcture at Machu Picchu,
the sun gate near the the ancient city of Tiahuanaco in Peru, and others...

No... those things were constructed by actual people.

So, you kicked the 14 kids out of the house and got restraining orders on them so they couldn't come withing 100 yards of the farm, you , your wife or the one child that had a good heart....

That's what God did..... in His way.

Isn't God supposed to be omnibenevolent? So instead of coming down and offering guidance, he decides to commit mass genocide. This doesn't sound like an all loving God. This sounds like a power hungry, violent human being.

Do you have any evidence for that claim? Some of those megalithic structures are stumping engineers even today.

Check out this guy's talk about geologists not wanting to delve into it and architects being amazed and with no explanations....

This has very interesting information and presents some evidence that is hard to deny.

"I believe it's a mythological creature thought to lure Greek sailors to their deaths with its hypnotic singing."
So do I have this correct?

Student: What were the "sons of God" in Genesis 6?
Valentine: In my professional opinion, mythological creatures.
Student: What were the Sirens?
Valentine: Mythological creatures thought to lure Greek sailors to their deaths with their hypnotic singing.

Do I have that right?

Yes.

What were the "daughters of men" in Genesis 6?

He isn't power hungry as He is all powerful. The fact is that the human race was going to be totally wiped out. God was disgusted with the humans. Noah found favor due to the fact that he still was a Godly man and of pure DNA. Who knows, maybe there were others with pure DNA but they were not Godly and had turned into the unrighteous people that God despised. So, God agreed to start over with Noah and his family.

What would you have done with millions of people who were totally off the rails? You're just going to come down and show them how to live right? Hmm didn't He do that? And, ya they crucified Him.

It's also important to note that Bible never actually says that it didn't rain before the flood,
How do you interpret this, then?

Hebrews 11:7a By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet,

Are we presuming that I have all the authority and powers of an omnipotent deity in this scenario?

If so, even with my limited imagination, I have a feeling I could come up with more options than "kill them all".
Do you have some examples of these options?
