Thank you. I suspect that the article I recall was prior to the explosion of DNA based studies. Still, even at 70,000 they were spread extremely thinly over the world's largest land mass. Extremely!

The definition of life is hotly debated.
My recommended method of analysis is to board a spaceship
for a few thousand lightyears of travel and when you get
back here you'll long for the taste of earth in your mouth
and have some idea about what defines life.
