When it comes to certain things, following social norm is totally fine and makes no difference in the long run. But it's annoying and stressful for people who do follow social norm to the minutiae of the detail to expect the same from others. People who follow social norm usually can't wrap their minds around people who do not but rather choose to do their own thing, and unfortunately, they're usually given a hard time about it.
My niece is dealing with this very problem concerning her up and coming wedding in the spring. It's getting so bad she's literally considering just going down to the courthouse and tying the knot there. It'll be a darn shame if she actually does that because deep down inside I know she wants to have an actual wedding. What needs to happen here is this, she needs to finally learn to say "No" to everything she doesn't want that everyone else is insisting/expecting she do and brush off everyone's butt-hurt feelings, which is precisely what I told her. ...Welcome to adulthood, welcome to having in-laws, welcome to this-is-forever married life.
Amen, Miss Spaulding. And I'm glad you let your niece know that.
