  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The point is the amount is irrelevant to what I was arguing. Someone said there is no verifiable credible evidence for Christianity. That is simply false.

Christianity is real and you can track it's development, as you can many other religions.

Now, examining the evidence to support the basic Christian theology, is another matter.

Some parts of the bible can be deemed credible with a high degree of certainty. Other parts are deemed credible with lower degrees of certainty.

Much of the bible though, can not be deemed with credible or reliable by historians who do that for a living. I have studied the NT extensively by reading the works of various NT scholars and historians. They can all pretty much agree on the following in regards to the gospels specifically:

-Jesus was baptized
-Jesus had followers
-Jesus was likely a real person
-Jesus was crucified

Beyond that, the opinions are all over the place and when the historical method is applied as it was intended to be applied, not much else has much credibility, in regards to being reliable history.

I would challenge that bhsmte. It seems that recently Jesus' existence has come into serious academic question. Richard Carrier and others can provide very good arguments that Jesus did not actually exist. I'm guessing you've heard them, if you haven't I can provide links.

Bible is a part of Christianity. Thus anything in the Bible can be used as evidence. You already mentioned some parts of the Bible are verifiable or deemed credible.

That makes my point entirely. Now what credible evidence can you provide for the Buggy Monster?

According to your logic, anything in a Spiderman comic can be used to prove that Spiderman is real. Well, New York city is discussed in Spiderman comics. According to your logic this is evidence that Spiderman is real.

I would challenge that bhsmte. It seems that recently Jesus' existence has come into serious academic question. Richard Carrier and others can provide very good arguments that Jesus did not actually exist.

I have probably read, the works of a dozen highly credentialed NT scholars and historians. In fact it was this exercise and what I learned, that caused me to conclude, that I could no longer reconcile the Christian theology with reality.

With that said, the vast majority of these folks, give a high degree of credibility to Jesus likely being a real person. Granted, there is much bias in NT scholarship and historical work, because the majority of these folks are Christians themselves.

I am fully aware of Carrier's arguments and will admit, they can be quite compelling and I would imagine, they will likely gain steam, because Carrier applies the historical method as it was intended to be applied, with rigor.

As I stand right now, I would lean towards Jesus likely being a real person, but I could be swayed as more critical examination takes place.

Dang, you sure have the ability to say exactly what you mean, wish I could say the same. Great response. Thanks.

Whether or not there was a historical Jesus (and yes, Carrier's book is pretty good), the more defensible position without getting mired down in arguable details is that there's no good evidence that a historical Jesus was a god.

LOL, fine. Legends of Greek Gods revolve around real places, Mount Olympus for one. So is that evidence that the Greek Gods exist, and they are more probable?

Until you demonstrate the mathematical probability that your God exists, or demonstrate mathematically that your God is more probable than another God, you can't say it is "more probable". I've explained this numerous times, and I'm still waiting for the mathematical equations.

Sounds like someone is suggesting false faith and for one that believes in God would understand that God knows the difference between fake and real. This, to me suggests that the person really doesn't think God it all that intelligent, because he can be dupped by anyone who claims to love him, so he can slide by Christ and enter into the kingdom of God, without really doing anything.

Among some of the scholars and historians, this is a heated debate. Jesus only implies that he is divine in the gospel of John and John was written the last of the four gospels and about 60-70 years after Jesus died. And virtually all of these scholars and historians readily admit, all the gospels were actually penned by anonymous authors. Also, John is the one gospel, that most scholars and historians call into question as having the least credibility, because of it's writing style being completely different and that fact that none of the other three gospels, ever mentions anything about Jesus being God and how could they miss such a crucial point.

Furthermore, there is clear evidence that John had verses added to it, hundreds of years later and the story of adulteress, is one example of a very late addition, that was no where to be found in the oldest available copies.

Was Legend of Greek Gods written as a factual account of people, events, and places? Or was it a fictional book that happened to include some real places?

I already demonstrated how the Christian God is more probable than the Buggy Man.

At the time, Zeus and the other Greek Gods were believed to exist and were worshiped, so these legends were believed to be true, and they were written as a factual account of Gods, people, events, and places. For instance, it was believed by many that Zeus was responsible for lightning.

I already demonstrated how the Christian God is more probable than the Buggy Man.

No you haven't. You have made the assertion. Now provide the proof.
