The Japanese cowardly sneaked attacked us. The things they did were as bad as anything Hitler and his goons came up with. Just ask the Chinese. They estimated losses on both sides as high as 3 million. There are videos of Japanese women throwing their children off cliffs and then following them rather than being "shamed" by surrendering to "barbarians".

The Japanese people of that era thought of the Emperor as divine. As in, he was a god. They, civilians included, willingly committed suicide for him. The military leaders in the US realized that with that level of fanaticism, an invasion of the main islands would cost more than 1 million casualties. So, they had the bomb and used it.

It is always so easy for subsequent generations to criticize the hard choices that their predecessors made. I find it ironic that most people today who have never experienced suffering or loss in any capacity can be so quick to judge those who were in the midst of world turmoil. I'm not necessarily defending the atomic bomb, but it wasn't some trigger happy snap judgement.

I agree. They basically had three choices. Invade, and cost millions of lives. Blockade, and let the war drag on for years and years, potentially costs even more lives. Or use the bomb. We know the results of that decision.
