  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You'd be surprised how many Creationists actually think that science is busily trying to prove that dogs can become cats.
I don't.

I think science is more concerned with other things.

Only unless they have to, will they do it.

Find rabbits in the Precambrian?

No problem.

Just make a couple program changes, recalibrate some equipment, rig a vote, and voilà, a new paradigm emerges.

Then all they have to do is change all the textbooks and sell them in the student bookstores for another $275.00.

No, science does not work that way, AV, and you know it. But I will comment on the people making pigs and mice glow with gene insertion is something I have always found odd.

Pigs, mice, cats, rabbits, monkeys, dogs, fish, and many other things now have been made to glow through inserting a gene via virus.

It's unlikely that any well-established system
could naturally be stretched that far. But some
systems may have the flexibility designed into
them to cross over into new species as man
has chosen to defined them.

When we have mapped every implication of
every combination of DNA in all known environments
then the answer may be clearer.

i suppose this is a jab at me and especially in regard to my poll.
i guess i should have clarified "what were canines before they were canines?"
can anyone answer this?
seeing as we have the fossils and all.

A proto-canine. Something basal to the entire canine lineage. Which was a kind of canid which diverged from other canids (for example jackals, foxes, and tanukis). A basal canid diverged from other caniforms earlier, and thus a basal or proto-canid shared a lineage with other caniforms, the canids being most closely related to bears, but also related to the racoon family, mustelids (weasel family), and more distantly the pinnipeds (seals and walruses).

We can go back far enough back to reach a basal carnivoran that would be ancestral to both caniform and feliform groups, namely the miacids which appeared shortly after the K-T extinction event which wiped out, among many other animal groups, all non-avian dinosaurs.

So H E L I X isn't too far a stretch.

I thought of mentioning the series, but am knee deep in work.

MOD HAT ON

This thread has undergone a cleanup. Staff has removed off-topic posts. Please address the subject, not each other, and stick to the discussion of whether evolution makes it possible for one animal to change into another one.

Thank you.

Not in a billion years. That's why they are still cats and dogs. That's why E coli are still E coli - despite a billion generations and billions of mutations.

They just can't overcome that variation limit. The exact reason real scientists have all but given up on it as a viable source for new species.

http://www.weloennig.de/Loennig-Long-Version-of-Law-of-Recurrent-Variation.pdf

And to comment on glowing mice - are we equating evolution with intentional directed manipulation now? And aren't those mice still, well - mice?
