  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit unforgivable?

Something I've been wondering about for a while.

Why is blasphemy of God and/or Jesus forgivable, but not blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?

It is the work of the Holy Spirit that bears witness to the truth about Jesus Christ, Salvation and God. When one hears all the truth, then rejects that truth and attributes it to the work of Satan and calls it a deception, there is no forgiveness for that sin. Why? Because that person has already rejected, with full knowledge, all that there is to know about being saved. Nothing else will convince him/her to believe. By the way, the people that commit such sin are not walking around afraid and worried that they are damned. They don't believe in Christianity, they don't believe Christ and His Word, it's all foolishness to them. So to them, there is nothing to fear, since it's all a lie.

The people Jesus was talking to when He said this were those religious ones who thought they had all the answers. For all their orthodoxy they did not recognise when their Messiah arrived among them. They accused Jesus of casting out devil through the power of the devil himself. It was more than just the accusation, but showed the incorrigible evil that was in the hearts of the accusers. It is a warning to those religious people who accuse those who cast out demons and engage in believing that God does healing and miracles today as workers of the devil. Those who can accuse other Christians in this way are not demonstrating the spirit of Christ, and if they do not have the spirit of Christ then they have nothing to do with Christ Himself. They may name the Name of Christ, but when they appear before Him, He will say, "I never knew you. Depart from Me you workers of evil." Anyone who has the spirit of Christ would never accuse fellow believers of being workers for the devil.

If God uses every avenue of contact with a person, and they harden their hearts against them, against all forms of grace, and the Holy Spirit is grace, then there is nothing more a gentlemen God can do to persuade the person to repent, or else any sins even murders can be forgiven. So read Hebrews 6 and see the list of graces and the explanation of no return there for tasting and sinning against all graces. So I would leave the power of the resurrection until I am mature before asking for it. Living water, Jesus' sacred blood, anointing oil, for healing, mission and laughter, and fire, light and love as in Romans 5:5 I have in view.

So does this mean even if I accepted christ when I doubt or think to myself "what if Jesus was actually the devil?" does that mean I have committed a unforgivable sin?
You can ask for a word of knowledge from someone gifted and receive Jesus' blood, and it would clean your heart and conscience. If you can turn back, you can be forgiven.
