  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Seems like so often in the Old Testament it was clear who were the good guys and the bad guys!

Faroukfarouk,

Most of the kings of the northern Kingdom of Israel were evil. Of all the kings of Israel Ahab and his wife Jezebel were the worst.

2 Chronicles Chapter 19

After the battle against the Syrians, Jehoshaphat returned to his house in Jerusalem in peace.

A seer told Jehoshaphat that God was angry because he had helped the ungodly Ahab.

However God still appreciated that Jehoshaphat had taken away the groves to Baal, and he had seeked God in his heart.

Jehoshaphat brought the people back to God, and he sent out judges throughout Judah.

In Jerusalem Jehoshaphat used the Levites as priests and judges.

Jehoshaphat charged the Levites, “Thus ye shall do in the fear of the Lord, faithfully, and with a perfect heart. Deal courageously, and the Lord shall be with the good.”

Jehoshaphat was one of the great kings of Judah.

Wow!!! That's a theme i've noticed a LOT lately...the "fear of the Lord" and "perfect heart"....as if a Godly fear of the LOrd is what defines a "perfect heart" before God....

Brinny,

Yes you are right this is a wonderful quotation.

Thus ye shall do in the fear of the Lord, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.

The attack by Moabites, Ammonites and Mount Seir

2 Chronicles Chapter 20

A mighty host of Moabites, Ammonites and Mount Seir came against King Jehoshaphat and Judah.

Jehoshaphat was feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

Jehoshaphat prayed to God, “We have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.”

A prophet told Jehoshaphat that God would lead them to victory. God intervened and made the invaders fight each other in mass confusion.

The Moabites and Ammonites turned on Mount Seir and killed them all.

Then the Moabites and Ammonites fought each other until they were all dead. None escaped.

The army of Jehoshaphat came to collect spoil from the defeated armies. For three days they collected riches in abundance and precious jewels but there was too much. There was more than they could carry.

The army of Jehoshaphat returned to Jerusalem with joy. They celebrated with psalteries, harps and trumpets. The army of Jehoshaphat had not suffered any casualties at all.

The fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those counties round about, when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Judah.

So the realm of was quiet and God gave Jehoshaphat rest.

Sometime later Jehoshaphat King of Judah became friendly with the King of Israel. Together they built a fleet of ships. But God did not approve because the King of Israel was evil. So God sunk all the ships in a storm, and the fleet never put to sea.

Jehoshaphat reigned for 25 years as the King of Judah, and he was a very good king.
After the death of Jehoshaphat his son Jehoram became King of Judah.

Miss Rowy

This has to one the most amazing battles ever. The army of Jehoshaphat returned to Jerusalem without suffering any casualties.

The life of King Jehoram of Judah

2 Chronicles Chapter 21

When Jehoshaphat died his eldest son Jehoram became King of Judah.

To make his succession to the throne more secure Jehoram killed all his six brothers and also several other princes of Judah.

Jehoram was thirty-two when he became king and he reigned for 8 years.

Jehoram married the daughter of Ahab, and did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord.

The Edomites revolted against King Jehoram. The region of Libnah revolted against King Jehoram.

Jehoram built high places to worship Baal in the mountains.

God was angry with Jehoram. The prophet Elijah told him that bowl disease would be sent by God.

This terrible bowl disease would punish the people of Judah for fornication and whoring.

The Philistines and Arabians attacked Judah. They took all his wives and killed all his sons, with the exception of the youngest son Ahaziah.

Jehoram was sick for two years with a terrible bowl disease plague as was foretold by Elijah.

After two years his bowls fell out through disease and he died.

Jehoram died unloved by his people, and he was not buried in the usual place for kings.

When Jehoram died his youngest son Ahaziah became King of Judah in his place.

Wow! God literally caused Jehoshaphat's enemies to "fear" Him (God) and to "fear" coming against His people. And king Jehoshaphat and his army had NO casualties...that's astounding...

What a tragic life he had, of his own doing....to actually KILL his brothers and then marry the daughter of one so vile indicates a heart condition that despised God....and then if that's not bad enough he COMPELS his people he rules over to sin abominably. And for all intents and purposes he never repented, even after God struck him with a horror of a disease wherein he died a horror of a way, with his bowels "falling out"? What adds to the tragedy is that NOBODY sorrowed and he was not honored at his death, because apparently he was much hated by ALL.

What a legacy. Tragic.

Brinny,

Yes the life of Jehoram was a tragic story from beginning to end.

WARNING - Today’s story is not for the faint hearted.
Hundreds of people get murdered in today’s story.
If you are of a nervous disposition I suggest that you skip today’s story (2 Chronicles 22)
Even if you are basically a hard tough person you will still be very shocked by all the bloodshed.

2 Chronicles Chapter 22

When Jehoram died of bowl disease his youngest son Ahaziah became King of Judah because all the older brothers had been killed by the Arabian raiders.

Ahaziah only reigned for one single year. He was an evil king and the house of Ahab were his counsellors.

He was persuaded by the King of Israel to go join in a disastrous war with Syria.

Ahaziah was wounded fighting the Syrians and went to Israel to rest because he was very weak.

At this time God decided that the house of Ahab should be wiped out.

The Lord anointed Jehu to be the King of Israel. Jehu rose to power and killed all the house of Ahab.

Jehu killed the King of Israel, and hundreds of his kinsmen.

The wounded King Ahaziah was travelling there to meet the King of Israel was also killed by Jehu.

The news of Ahaziah’s death reached Ahaziah’s mother. (2 Chronicles 22v10)

His mother’s name was Athaliah. On hearing the news of her son’s death Athaliah killed all the heirs to the throne of Judah. The only survivor was Joash because he was hidden by the king’s sister.

Joash was the king’s son. The king’s sister hid Joash in the temple for six years.

When Athaliah thought all the heirs to the throne of Judah were dead, she seized power and reigned as Queen of Judah.

Athaliah reigned for six years as Queen of Judah.

High Priest Jehoiada puts Joash on the throne of Judah

2 Chronicles Chapter 23

Joash hid in the temple for six years. The high priest Jehoiada looked after him. In the seventh year Jehoiada organised a coup d’état against the evil usurping Queen Athaliah.

Jehoiada organised the army captains and the Levites, and they crowned seven year old Joash King of Judah in the temple.

Queen Athaliah was arrested and executed. The people rejoiced that evil Queen Athaliah was dead.

For the rest of the life of high priest Jehoiada, he guided King Joash. Jehoiada gave wise counsel to King Joash and the Kingdom of Judah prospered.
