• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Here's the text

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

What do we know about it?

What is it?

Where did it come from?

Who does it apply to?

Who was it given to?

What does it mean?

How is it applied?

Should be an interesting thread.

In the "Where it came from" section - Ex 20:11 argues that it came from Gen 2:1-3

Origin –
Gen 2
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Exodus 20:
8 ""Remember The Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 ""
Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
11 "" FOR in six days the LORD MADE THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH, THE SEA AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed The Sabbath day and made it holy.

Ex 20:11 - and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed The Sabbath day and made it holy.

Mark 2:27 “the Sabbath was MADE for Mankind – not mankind MADE for the Sabbath”

==============================================================

In the How is it applied section we see that it is applied in both NT and OT.

we don't see the third commandment quoted at all in the NT - it reads like this.

Ex 20
7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain."

Can we then bend-wrench the Bible and "imagine" that only the last 6 commandments apply and not the first 4??

"No" says the Bible in James 2 "For HE WHO said" do not commit adultery also said the first 4 commandments.

"No" says the majority of even pro-sunday scholarship- as we saw on page one -- thus demonstrating a level of "obvectivity" on this point never even attempted by the "at war against God's ten commandments" POV.

And how many times do we see God's Sabbath Commandment quote even in part in the NT?

Acts 4:
24So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: "Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them,

Acts 14:15
and saying, "Men, why are you doing these things? We are also men of the same nature as you, and preach the gospel to you that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, WHO MADE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM.(NASB shows the quote of Exodus 20)

Rev 14:
7and he said with a loud voice, "Fear God, and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who made the heaven and the earth and sea and springs of waters."

Heb 4
4For He has said somewhereconcerning the seventh day: "AND GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY FROM ALL HIS WORKS";

Heb 4:9 "There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God"

In Heb 10:4-12 "He takes away the first to establish the second" when it comes to animal sacrifices.
But in Heb 4:9 "there REMAINS therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God" when the OT law is not taken away.

Christ said "The Sabbath was MADE for Mankind" Mark 2:27.

He is right.

"from Sabbath to Sabbath shall ALL mankind come before Me to worship" Is 66:23.

And in Ex 20 we find that sure enough - Israel is "part of mankind".

What do we know about it?
It's one of ten commandments in the covenant between God and the Children of Israel.

What is it?
These words are a sign of the covenant between God and the Children of Israel.

Where did it come from?
It came from God at Mt Sinai.

Who does it apply to?
The Children of Israel and those who live within their borders.

Who was it given to?
Moses for The Children of Israel and not the world

What does it mean?
It means that the God who created the world in 6 day and rested on the seventh day is the God of Israel. He has set us free from bondage and given us the 7th day to rest from all kinds of labor.
How is it applied?
By ceromonially resting on the seventh day as written in the ordinances of the law.

All the commandments were given to Israel, not just the Sabbath. The new covenant was for Israel only as well.

I'd agree we can find that both the Old and New Covenant was made with the Children of Israel.

That fact does not mean that all nations of the world does not benefit from what God promised to do through Abraham's seed or one nation or especially through Jesus Christ.

Jhn 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Jhn 3:17
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

The word for rested is shabath and means to cease as v 1 verifies creation was complete. We have a stopping of creating. This word shabath is translated as cease in other passages. One such passage even says the Sabbath will cease (shabath). I didn't provide the references for my statement for a reason. Its not to hide. I want other to avail themselves of the Bible study aids abundant on the net. I also have hard copies of such things.

Another definition of the word shabath is desist from labour. Desist means stop and not do again. Desist is a legal term used in law to place restraint on an individual from doing something.

We see v 2 even says ended which means stopped or ceased. The Bible is self defining for those who pay attention to details.

We also see the phrase seventh day in v 2. We don't find the word Sabbath (shabbath) in Genesis. Notice these words are very close in spelling. The difference is a single b and a double b. The word with a single b is a verb and the word with the double b is a noun.

V 3 says God sanctified the 7th day. It doesn't say the Sabbath. There's no mention of the Sabbath day.

Now we have a confession God Blessed and sanctified the 7th day and not the Sabbath. We also have a reason God did this. That reason is God ceased from His work of creation. There is no other reason stated in Gen 2. One should also note there is no end of the 7th day God blessed as the days of creation. One should note the 7th day of creation week isn't a periodic day on a cycle of days. Its an end.

There's another very neat and important word found in Exodus 8:11 I'd like to call attention to, therefore in Bob's version. Mine says wherefore (KJV) and means essentially the same thing. (Deut 5:15 uses the word therefore and a different reason for the requirement).The short definition is because. That's the way I've always read the verse in question. The more direct and literal translation would be for as Bob's quote shows. I use the KJV mainly because all my Bible study aides are based on it. I can see no justifiable reason to buy a new library for a new version of the Bible. It also implies a reason doing so. The reason preceded the word therefore. It expresses the reason God instituted the Sabbath first mentioned in Exodus 16. It doesn't call the seventh day of creation week the Sabbath.

The word therefore seems to be supplied. I believe it is justified with the first word of the verse "for."

In Ex 20:11 we have God blessing the Sabbath and not the 7th day.

We should also note that God doesn't require the Sabbath of anyone outside of Israel. I'll address the word "sojourner" in another post. Thus there isn't any importance to those outside of Israel about the 7th day. No one else has the Sabbath. Both Ex 31:13 and Eze 20:12 should make this very clear. Ex 20:8-11 was verbally given to Israel according to Ex 19 and 20.

This verse is taken out of context to prove something Ex 20:8-11; 31:13 and Eze 20:12 flatly disprove. The OT says the Sabbath was given to Israel only. In Mark Jesus is directly answering and talking with Jews. It is said but there are Gentiles present hearing Jesus. Note Gentiles didn't ask the question. The answer Jesus gave also isn't directed to or about them. If it were Jesus would be calling Moses and Ezekiel liars. I could throw in some other major players I Israel's history from the Bible.

Ex 20

This has nothing to do with the topic and is merely filler material.

We have no need to do so and don't.
"No" says the Bible in James 2 "For HE WHO said" do not commit adultery also said the first 4 commandments.
Readers please examine James 2 for yourselves. This statement is a misrepresentation of James. Its more like a run on sentence meant to confuse. First of all James isn't teaching nor requiring the keeping of the law.
"No" says the majority of even pro-sunday scholarship- as we saw on page one -- thus demonstrating a level of "obvectivity" on this point never even attempted by the "at war against God's ten commandments" POV.
Not on page one of this thread. You're just mindlessly c&ping filler material.
And how many times do we see God's Sabbath Commandment quote even in part in the NT?
So those references really aren't talking about the 10 Cs nor the Sabbath.
Exodus 20:
8 ""Remember The Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 ""

10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
11 "" FOR in six days the LORD MADE THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH, THE SEA AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed The Sabbath day and made it holy.
Not even a NT quote. The rest is nothing but off topic filler material, so I snipped them.

Already addressed.
"from Sabbath to Sabbath shall ALL mankind come before Me to worship" Is 66:23.
This is off topic because it has nothing to do with the Sabbath much less the OP quoted passage.
And in Ex 20 we find that sure enough - Israel is "part of mankind".
This is only worth some smart aleck or wise crack response. All such things seem to a violation of the rules.
Is 56 -
Is 56
2 Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil.
3 Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the Lord, speak, saying, The Lord hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.
4 For thus saith the Lord unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;
5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.
6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the Lord, to serve him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;
7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.
Now this is where the word "stranger" in the OP needs to be addressed.

The "sojourner" isn't an Jew or Israeli under the demands (requirements) of the law except while in Israel. Such an observance would only be reasonable decorum on the part of anyone. If I were to visit your house I'd respect your authority there. That authority doesn't exist if I'm not within your gates (in or on your property). This wasn't demanded by the Jews of others when in a foreign land. They did however invite and welcome them to their religious institution, the synagogue.

A "sojourner" or "stranger" is only one when within their gates (in or on their property) and hasn't joined themselves to the Lord through their covenant.

Who is this stranger Isaiah talks about. If they take on the covenant (join themselves t the Lord) they're not a stranger and to be as one born in the land (an Israeli) according to Ex 12:48-49

48 And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof.

49 One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you.

The stranger is forbidden to partake of the covenant rites and obligations unless they join the covenant by the rite of circumcision. Only then does the covenant apply to them. Those that do so are no longer a stranger nor sojourner.

If they're not in Israel they're not strangers nor sojourners and aren't required to perform that covenant. They don't sin in that respect concerning the rites or obligations of the law.

Thus the 4th commandment doesn't apply to non Israeli or those not submitting to the requirements of their covenant.

That direct contradiction of scripture is the entire point of the discussion.

God said
"11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it."

Gen 2
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Ex 20:11 and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it."

11and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. (NASB)

Gen 2:3 Clark's Commentary
Because that in it he had rested - שבת shabath, he rested; hence Sabbath, the name of the seventh day, signifying a day of rest

Ex 20:11 Young's Literal Translation
and resteth in the seventh day; therefore hath Jehovah blessed the Sabbath-day, and doth sanctify it.

Gen 2
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it:

"House of Prayer for ALL nations" is the world wide scope of Gospel evangelism - and even in the OT God "So Loved the WORLD" and declared himself to be calling "ALL on earth" to salvation.

IS 56 does not say "to the stranger that moves to Israel"

IS 56 does not say "to the stranger who while visiting Israel must honor God's Word otherwise live in rebellion"

I think we all agree on that point.

3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Ex 20:11 - and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed The Sabbath day and made it holy.

Mark 2:27 “the Sabbath was MADE for Mankind – not mankind MADE for the Sabbath”

==============================================================

Heb 4
4For He has said somewhereconcerning the seventh day: "AND GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY FROM ALL HIS WORKS";

You're just mindlessly c&ping filler material.So those references really aren't talking about the 10 Cs nor the Sabbath.Not even a NT quote. The rest is nothing but off topic filler material, so I snipped them.

"Not even a NT quote" is only true of the 3rd commandment to not take God's name in vain.

But the examples above give many NT quotes of the Sabbath -

And if the argument is "a full quote" then there is a great many commandments without a "full quote in the NT" in the first four commandments.

Already addressed.This is off topic because it has nothing to do with the Sabbath much less the OP quoted passage.This is only worth some smart aleck or wise crack response. All such things seem to a violation of the rules.Now this is where the word "stranger" in the OP needs to be addressed.

Therefore according to your reasoning God's domain of authority is as big as the land of Canaan. If you're outside the land of Israel no Law applies to the transgressor and he can do whatever evil he wanted.

“Avoid foolish questions and genealogies and contentions and striving about the Law for they are unprofitable and vain … knowing that he that is such is subverted and sinneth being condemned of himself.” Titus 3:9,11.

Note the word "genealogies".

Hebrews chapter 7 verses 11,12 If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood for on the basis of it the law was given to the people why was there still need for another priest to come one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? For when there is a change of the priesthood, there must also be a change of the law.

John chapter 15 verse 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

Galatians chapter 5 verse 14 The entire law is summed up in a single command love your neighbor as your self.

Galatians chapter 4 verse 21-31

Tell me you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says? For it is written that Abraham had two sons,one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman. His son by the slave woman was born in the ordinary way; but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a promise.

These things may be taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written: "be glad, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry aloud, you who have no labor pains; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband. Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. At that time the son born in the ordinary way persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now. But what does the Scripture say? Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman's son Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.

1 Kings chapter 8 verse 46 When they sin against you for there is no one who does not sin

2 Chronicles chapter 6 verse 36 When they sin against you for there is no one who does not sin

1John chapter 1 verse 8 If anyone claims to be without sin they deceive themselves and the truth is not in them.

James chapter 2 verse 10 If anyone keeps the whole law yet stumbles at just one point there guilty of breaking all of it.

Galatians chapter 5 verse 14 the entire law is summed up in a single command love your neighbor as your self.

In Gal 4 - Paul is talking about the ceremonial law.

In 1Cor 7:19 "what matters is KEEPING the Commandments of God" -- this is Paul speaking to gentiles in this case.

In James 2 - James does not argue that we need to break all the commandments of God instead of just breaking one.

Matt 19
And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?” 17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18 Then he *said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “
You shall not commit murder;
You shall not commit adultery;
You shall not steal;
You shall not bear false witness;
19 Honor your father and mother;

and
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

"what matters is Keeping the Commandments of God" 1Cor 7:19

"do we then make void the Law of God by our faith? God forbid! In fact we ESTABLISH the LAW" Rom 3:31

What law? The Law that condemns all mankind as sinners -

Rom 3
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

That same law - same chapter

"do we then make void the Law of God by our faith? God forbid! In fact we ESTABLISH the LAW" Rom 3:31

Rom 7
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

Rom 13

8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
9 For this,
Thou shalt not commit adultery,
Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal,
Thou shalt not bear false witness,
Thou shalt not covet;

and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

James 2
8 If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” (Lev 19:18) you are doing well.
9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
11 For He who said,
“Do not commit adultery,”
also said,
“Do not commit murder.”
Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty

The effort to show that the lost do not gain heaven by sidestepping the Gospel and simply "being sinless" -- is one that Paul makes in several places. And of course nobody doubts him on that point.

Yet for the saints - Paul argues that the New Covenant has the Jer 31:31-33 LAW of God "written on the heart and mind" Heb 8:10-12.

And of course "do we then make void the LAW of God by our faith? God forbid! In fact we ESTABLISH the LAW of God" Rom 3:31.

Also written to gentiles.

in Christ,

Bob
