  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It takes much prayer and a lot of faith. You have to believe you can do it for God to give it to you. It starts as a voice in your head from the holy spirit. Then you might feel your lips or tongue moving. Then when you feel that, let your voice come out with it. It won't make sense, but this is the "edifying prayer tongue" and no one can understand it unless it is interpreted.

What I'm confused about is... Well the language part. I thought in the NT they were speaking in other languages that other people know. I was under the impression that people today mostly speak in an unknown language to everyone. You said "unless it is interpreted" so they are talking in another language thwn?
My Grandmothers both did this so I don't doubt its authenticity, I am just confused of what it is you are doing or saying.

I didn't vote since there is no answer there that I would choose.

My answer would be a straight no. Not because I do not believe in tongues, but rather that I believe that not all will speak/pray in tongues.

There are two types of tongues. One that allows you to speak a language you don't know in order to witness/preach in someone else's language. This is called "xenolalia". There is also a tongue you speak that only the angels and God understands. This is called "glossolalia". Here are some verses about Glossolalia.

1 Corinthians 14:2 (NIV)
For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.

Romans 8:26 (NIV)
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

1 Corinthians 14:19 (MEV)
Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

Still does not say that all will speak in them. I know many Christians who ask, and believe that they speak/pray in tongues and it does not happen.

I know that God hears all my prayers even when speaking in the only language that I know, which is English.

If you look at the groups that received tongues in Scripture, it states "all" received (Acts 2:4; 4:31; 10:44; 19:2) with one exception - on the Day of Pentecost, not in the Upper Room, where there were mockers of tongues.

"Do all speak in tongues?" (I Cor 12:30 that Scripture is referring to the gift of tongues with interpretation).

I see nothing Biblically to indicate tongues as a gift that all will have or should be able to perform. I myself would love to have it but I don't. Anything that connects me to the father in prayer I'm all for it. Will I? That's totally up to God. I don't believe it's a matter of effort. Gifts aren't earned they are free. If you had to earn it, it's not a gift.

You can't teach it...lol. And I wouldn't try.

When Paul laid hands on them they spoke with tongues.

When they heard the preaching they spoke with tongues.

When I spoke in tongues I was at my bedside, alone, and was lifting up God in my native tongue (english) to the highest I possible could. When I hit a barrier and couldn't lift him up any higher in my natural language, that's when the barrier broke, that's when the tongues gushed out, like a river!

Paul said, I pray in tongues and pray in my understanding also.
Paul said, I sing in tongues and sing in my understanding also.

Clearly shows a distinction between the intelligible and unintelligible.

Unknown tongue is that of a person's spirit. No tongue is unknown to the Holy Spirit. God has given one of the greatest gifts of speaking in a known language.Gift cannot be shared! (speaking and interpretation)

It was crafty solution of Paul to notorious Corinthian church of that period!

in red ... there's that river of lifer again
and your right its not taught ..its bubbles up it bursts forth ...

most are not seeking tongues .. they are seeking the lord Jesus to know him more .

many do not receive tongues because they seek the the wrong thing for the wrong reason.
James says "you have not because you ask not and when you ask you ask amiss "..you ask for the wrong reason and wrong motive ..just before that he speaks of being double minded and says let not that man think he shall receive anything ..

the Holy Spirit loves to make the lord Jesus known to us he delights in glorifying the lord Jesus.. "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.…

I've been asking for this gift for years. Still nothing

this is going to come across harsh sounding ...

but you say 'still nothing" with such faith that there will be nothing ..

food for thought
