A mom and her roommate are facing charges after punishing her 10-year-old son. How? Making him dress like a girl and then posting the demeaning pictures on Facebook.

Authorities say they learned of the photos after relatives saw them on social media and noticed the boy was visibly upset. Christle Prado and Keith Driscoll were charged with cruelty towards children and infliction of mental injury on a child.

2024 headline: Son murders mother.
"Oh, Mother no!, Blood" ;)

Can't comment on how terrible since it didn't show what happened.

I don't believe it is right to force a child to dress inappropriately to punish them. Maybe an alternate punishment if they chose.
Punishment means negitive or dislike. If they liked it or didn't care it wouldn't be punishment.

You have to have some form of negitive feed back for breaking the rules. It needs to be equal to the infraction and something that motivates the child not to repeat the offense.
Spanking is frowned on. So how do you teach a child to live within boundries?
Forced cross dressing is clearly not the answer.

Praise in public. Criticize in private. Good advice for work, family, everything. There are ways to get your point across without ruining a kid's life. Those people that used to hang urine stained sheets out in public were/are complete idiots.

I think Mom is a pathetic excuse for a parent if she did this just to appease her bullyish boyfriend/roommate/landlord.

I think this falls under the headline of "abuse" because it was done purely to humiliate the kid, not to correct or teach.

This infuriates me.

For those single men out there with no children and no girlfriend or wife... please take this as a case example that being married and/or having children in and of itself is meaningless as some indication such people inherently know more about properly rearing kids than you.

Criticism alone is not leadership. Lack of empathy is not leadership. Intimidation is not leadership. Failing to guide is not leadership. Failing to teach your junior ways to resolve dilemmas is not leadership.

Coaches in boxing, with novices under their tutelage, if and when a novice is timid those coaches seek to build up that novice's confidence, not tear it down. One way is to have the stronger, more experienced opponent stop punching, and allow the novice to hit that other fighter repeatedly. And I've heard coaches refer (address) to their more experienced amateur fighters as "champ."

Boxing coaches know if you destroy a novices mind he/she may likely never rebound from it but be mentally broken forever.

Most people think being a good leader is simply constantly criticizing someone, belittling them, barking commands and demands, and treating them in ways you would never want someone treating you.

Publicly emasculating this boy was like privately raping him to instruct him about your dominance and his weakness in relation to you.

As each person is an individual one can not know for sure how this boy will psychologically develop from this. He may become acutely sensitive to any perceived slight or challenge to his masculinity (what some may perceive as "homophobia") or he may develop a confusion about his sexual identity per where he fits in in the gender world (he may become a cross dresser as an adult). Who knows...

I think many parent believe humiliating their kids is a punish. I'm sure that's how they were raised.

When I was a little kid the neighbor girls dressed me up as a girl with makeup, dress and apples for breasts.

My mother thought it was the funniest thing she'd ever seen, my dad just shook his head, he did alot of that. I got out of the house before mom could get the camera.

I'm just glad this all happened in the early 80's long before social media.

I feel for the kid, the person who tucks you in at night shouldn't be the person hurting you for their own pleasure.

That's one of the benefits for being 40, over 40 or even almost 40, because we did all of our stupid stuff before the internet. ;)

I think this belays a problem for society as a whole.

Imagine that you never went to school, never learned math, basic science, basic history. Now, imagine how ignorant you would be of the workings of the world. You would develop your own system of rules and logic to explain the phenomena around you. You'd think electricity was magic, the rain happened because angels were crying, etc etc.

I submit that the above happens in terms of Psychology, Mental Development, and child rearing.

Very few of us have ever had any training or education in matters of Psychology or child rearing, or Mental development. Every single person feels that they are experts in the subject because they use themselves and their experiences as a basis for understanding .

I feel that there subjects like Leadership, Psychology, and child rearing should be part of the curriculum. Wrap it all together (the basics) in a 1 year course: 1 semester in junior high school, and another semester in high school.

Everytime I go to Walmart I see the results of a populace not having any education whatsoever in matters of leadership, psychology, and child rearing...

And to be fair, I've seen the ignorance at all levels of income. in fact, some of the worst parenting I've ever seen was from wealthy parents who couldn't tell you the first thing about their own kids...

From what the article says, I cannot condone the action by the mother and room-mate.

Separate question: What did the kid do to warrant such 'punishment'?

When my kids were little and did something 'wrong' - that is, with malevolent intent or beyond limits of 'childish ignorance' - I would do several things.

I'd ask them why they did what they did. Try to figure out the motivation.

Tell them what they did wrong and as best I could, explain why it was wrong. Give clear instructions 'that' action was not to be repeated.

Depending on the seriousness of the infraction, I'd smack them on the butt. Hard enough for them to remember what I told them. Not hard enough to damage them. To the best of my ability, such matters were private and not published outside the family with intent to embarrass them.

Only if the praise is real and justified, otherwise it sends the wrong message if it is only for a public audience. I do agree, do not humiliate in public or embarrass.

It's like the NFL coach who tells the press a player played a good game, when everyone knows they didn't. Doesn't really serve any purpose except to pretend.

Yep. You can correct your kid in other ways than this.

And as for allowing this guy to decide how to punish her kid? Unbelievable. SMH.

We raised ours without spanking and they are all great kids/adults. It just takes some thought and consideration.
