Goodness me, it's called metonymy! You know, how "suit" can stand in for "business professional" or how "the pen is mightier than the sword" is only true if pen represents the words that pens are used to write?
My, that's an awfully big word. What are you doing using technical terms like that in GT? ;)

Come on guys.

The wood accomplished nothing.

Certainly not righteousness.

Try 2 cor 5:21.

Nothing? If it causes you to consider what was done upon it, it has accomplished something. If noting else a substrate for a wonder. Yes I am quite aware it's mere wood.
Have you never looked upon a photo of a loved one and began to think upon them? It's really not that hard to do.
Iconaphobia setting in there guy?

I think, mostly, what I think of is how that whole thing reflected some of that "giving them over to their own lusts" that God did so much of.

He allowed them to become so frenzied and self-focused, that they actually murdered their own longed-for hope.

Willie - SO good to see you, dear brother! :)

I must say, that's a kind of "other side of the coin" reflection. No less valid, of course.

I thought about Judas, but not so much about the frenzied crowd. Or I should say, my thoughts shied away from thinking about the frenzied crowd. You're right - so blinded. It's hard to imagine how they could be so - except that surely this all was part of God's ultimate plan?

But thinking of the feelings of those who loved Him who were nearby, the crowd becomes that much more terrible. And something I had to turn away from considering too much. Judas was bad enough.

You come on. Do you think we don't know that a hunk of wood is just a hunk of wood? The wood symbolizes what was on it. We are not so dense and illiterate as you would like to believe that we are.

Goodness me, it's called metonymy! You know, how "suit" can stand in for "business professional" or how "the pen is mightier than the sword" is only true if pen represents the words that pens are used to write?

A hunk of wood is right.

But why not just give the attention to the ONE that deserves it.

Saved/born again people (rom 10:9) do not need to make "symbols" when they have Jesus.

Seems a little odd to be objecting to? It's not like there aren't plenty of hymns and songs about the Cross in Protestantism of all kinds. This is not a "Catholic" thing ...

Humans make symbols. It is how we process things. The Scripture is full of symbolism, in the words of Christ no less, who taught using symbols all the time.

There is a huge difference in a scriptural God given symbol versus a man made one.

"Blessed is the wood by which righteousness comes." Wisdom 14:7

What comes to mind first when I think of the Cross is that it is on the Cross where we see the fullness of God's revelation of Himself to us. That it is only by first seeing God hanging on the Cross that we can truly know Him for Who He truly is.
Amen.

Do you know some gathering of people who tend to forget this? I mean except in a dementia ward.

Sure seems like the RCC and Orthodox sure do focus a lot on the Baby and the Cross (with him still on it), then they do with the resurrection..... No offense but just sayin..

I think what you wrote is offensive, it certainly isn't a "just sayin" thing.

Did you ever stop to think why Jesus rose from the dead with wounds? Jesus rose from the dead with a glorified body. I never asked myself this question until a number of years ago when I read Deacon Keith Fournier's excellent book Wounds that Heal which really inspired me.

The barriers of time and space no longer apply to him. The Lord appears and disappears with shocking suddenness. He continually demonstrates his physical reality. The Apostles and the disciples see him, hear him, and eat with him. Thomas is told to touch his wounds. The stone rolled away from the entrance, and the carefully folded burial cloths direct our gaze to the physical. He has truly risen.

The disbelief and uncertainty evidenced by those who saw him testify to an apparent strangeness in the appearance of the newly risen Christ. Slowly they came to recognize him, but they still struggled with doubt. We are accustomed to an annual celebration of Easter. However, for the first disciples of Jesus, resurrection was totally new. Let us remember, that the son of the widow of Nain, Jairus' daughter, and Lazarus were all brought back to life by Jesus, but not one of them continued their lives with a glorified body.

... (see Reflecting on the Resurrection: Why did Jesus Rise with Wounds? )

If you believe that - you seriously need to attend a Pascha service in an Orthodox Church. And for the - what is it? Seven or so weeks after?

The Resurrection is HUGE!

1 Corinthians 1:18King James Version (KJV)

18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
Amen.

The cross is not our shame as Christ's friends; it is instead the end of our shame because on it hung the saviour of the world.

If a Catholic or someone who smells like a Catholic mentions the Resurrection, then we're told we don't emphasize the Cross enough. If we mention the Cross, then we're told we don't emphasize the Resurrection enough. No matter what we say, we are emphasizing the wrong thing and not putting enough emphasis on something else.

My suggestion would be to spend one year actively attending Orthodox services and then come back and tell us your thoughts on how much we emphasize what.
