  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Federal judge: Arguments against gay marriage 'are not those of serious people'

Of course it is! Do you think it makes sense to vote for a guy based on the color of his skin? MLK would indeed think that would be silly, but the sheeple of America did just that.

And yet all those people who voted for McCain or Romney because they are white still ended up on the losing side of things. Sheeple indeed they are.

That's about it.

LOLing that those who vote in Bush for two terms aren't considered 'sheeple'.

I guess what I meant was that marriage was once something that was between a man and woman who were committing themselves to one another in holy matrimony. But now that it's an activity that is licensed by the government, it seems to have more to do with how property is divided up and what taxes are paid and at what percentage. If the federal government would just stick to it's original main purpose (national defense), then people wouldn't have to rely on lawyers and judges to tell us how we can do things. That's when freedom and traditional values are able to exist, when government isn't a part of it.

You mean like how it started as a secular institution and was thought of by the Christians to be a non-religious matter? ^_^

And then the government prohibitions against same sex marriage will evaporate, and anyone of any religion can marry whoever/whatever they wish.

Isn't that already the case?

What part? People having SSM, or people of any religion getting married?

Neither. It was the part where you suggested that people could marry "whoever/whatever they wish".

That is not the case at all.

Although, yes, SSM and people of any religion getting married is already the case. Has been for a while.

I don't have a problem with it at all; I love Star Trek. My wife has a Star Trek tattoo, and loves it even more than I do. But it is the product of a staunch atheist, the sort of person you say is a corrupt fool who commits abominable acts. So I'm just curious as to why, if atheists are as bad as the Bible says they are, you would support them or anything they do.

If an atheist developed an important medication that you needed, would you refuse to use it? If n atheist owns a restaurant, would you refuse to eat there? Do you even check out those things before you make a purchase decision?

Are you asking Skaloop (whom you quoted), or were you asking me (the one Skaloop was addressing)?

No.

No.

Do you even check out those things before you make a purchase decision?

No. Well, not religion. There are some companies I will not patronize because of their politics, etc. I don't shop at Wal-Mart. I don't shop at Hobby Lobby. I have just had to stop purchasing products from Eden's Organics.

But then, I'm not the one claiming that atheists are corrupt fools who commit abominations. Nor am I the one claiming that while using a logo known to be the creation of an atheist.

And just an FYI, Bill Watterson is also an atheist.

Let's not forget that I'm using a computer which may or may not have been invented by an atheist.

So what is it that makes you get up in the morning and live the day? Also, what hope do you have for after your life on Earth is over?

Right. So that's kinda what I'm asking; why do you take advantage of what corrupt abominations create? How do you pick and choose between using atheist products?

So what is it that makes you get up in the morning and live the day?

A desire to live. Love for my wife. Love for my brother. Love for my parents. Love for my friends. Cheese. Fine wine. Ska music. Good beer. My cats. Volleyball. Ultimate. That smell just before it rains. Snow. Sex. Swimming. Enjoyment of nature. Responsibilities for my work. Lots of things.

But mostly my alarm clock.

Also, what hope do you have for after your life on Earth is over?

None. I have hope for my life before my life on Earth is over. I have no hope for anything after that. And I don't consider that a bad thing; it makes the before more valuable than the after.

You keep inflating some idea of something I may have said rather than quoting me directly. But I've never said anything about not using anything made by an atheist.

All things of the present time. So, when you die, it's all over then? You are comfortable with the idea that you are gone as if you never existed? I don't know if I could live like that. I would be asking myself, "Why bother then, if this is all that there is? If I'm gone forever eventually, why live now?"

I used to not believe in God, and eventually became suicidal when I thought there was no real purpose to life except to live now, doing my everyday responsibilities, with no real meaning since it all comes to nothing in the end. That way of thinking still seems very depressing to me. I'm curious as to how you're able to not believe in God, or in having a soul, or an afterlife, and yet find purpose in the current life that lasts maybe 80 or 90 years at most, and then ends as if it never existed (in your perception after death).

Lets not forget that the person who invented the modern computer and cracked the German Enigma code was gay.

Let's not forget that Neil Armstrong was the first person to step foot on the moon--and he was straight!

As you can see, this type of argument doesn't prove anything.

No, but you said that atheist are corrupt fools who commit abominations. If I found out that someone was that bad, I would not support them in any way.

All things of the present time. So, when you die, it's all over then?

Yup.

You are comfortable with the idea that you are gone as if you never existed?

Yup.

I don't know if I could live like that.

You don't have to. You are free to think otherwise, but I'm good.

I would be asking myself, "Why bother then, if this is all that there is? If I'm gone forever eventually, why live now?"

That says more about you than it does about me. If you're so nihilistic about living without a belief in God, so be it. I'm not. I am perfectly happy and fulfilled with my life.

Well, for starters, I am sorry and empathetic that you felt suicidal. I have also been in that mindset, so I hope you are not in that spot anymore. That my life may end in nothing doesn't negate the joy that I can take from my life before that, though.

You ask how I can find meaning in 80 or so years of life. I ask how can you find meaning in the eternal life promised in Heaven? My life is important because it is short. The things I do have meaning because they are fleeting. What is the meaning of your short Earthly life if you will have an eternity in the presence of God upon your death? Why do you care at all about what happens to you now when you are awaiting forever in the presence of what you consider pure love?

The judge in the OP was referring to a very specific ( and ludicrous) set of arguments against SSM when he said they "are not those of serious people" -- but as this thread goes on, I see it becoming more and more generally applicable.
