  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was thinking that if I had to testify in court, I would be hard pressed not to open the bible to the New Testament & swear only on that half.

(This while being vaguely aware that swearing itself is arguable).

I know "testify" comes from swearing on the possible loss of ones testes, that he's telling 'the truth, the whole truth, & nothing but the truth'.
Does anyone know how that evolved into swearing on a bible? I wonder where & when that first happened.

It's non existent in our courts here. Largely conjured up on teevee.

I dont know the history (and I hope you are playing talking about testes lol...)

But, I think it is all bollocks, and borderline blasphemous as God told us, "let our yes be yes, and no be no." What does swearing on the bible do for atheists, Muslims, and people of other faiths? They may as well have a Dr. Seuss book out for people to swear on.

I have refused to swear in court and legal depositions on several occasions.

I think CHristians ought to not swear on the Bible, as CHrist says let our yes be yes and our no be no. So, if you must, at least let people know what the Bible says.

Can you explain that one a bit? I'd appreciate the context
