  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why I'm No Longer a Republican- Gerry Myers

As Bush floundered, the brilliant and charismatic campaign and message of William Jefferson Clinton hit the scene and I voted for my first Democrat.
During the next eight years, I watched how President Clinton oversaw the longest peacetime economic expansion in our history; how the nation enjoyed the lowest unemployment rate in decades; how the home ownership rate grew to the highest it's ever been in the country's history; how he improved economic equality that led to a strong economy and a surplus federal budget. Though his tenure was plagued with scandals and impeachment, it is important to remember, he was acquitted of all charges.

If the controlled Supreme Court hadn't appointed Bush as president we would have had peace, further economic expansion and prosperity, and no deficit. Too bad not enough people are smart enough to see what the real Republican agenda is all about. If they would open their eyes and minds, they, too, would say they are no longer Republican.

*Note - there is no actual profanity in the title but the site's filter somehow posted in this manner.

HAHAHAHA!!!!

Good one.

I voted Republican a few times in my long life. But no more. Here is one reason why:

"the poor should wither and die"

Indiana Republican: 'No One Has the Guts' to Let the Poor 'Wither and Die'

While this does not represent the majority view, where are the Republicans to condemn this hate filled nonsense from a member of their party ?

But, it was the creation of the Tea Party facet of the Republican Party in 2010 that turned me into a loyal Democrat, rather than an Independent. I don't feel I abandoned the Republican Party but, I do feel the Republican Party abandoned me. Their emerging views on government, religion, women's rights, workers' rights, income inequality, violence against women, equal pay for women, minorities' voting rights, made me move away from these radical ideologues as quickly as possible.
This nailed it for me and ended my relationship with the GOP, even though it did not turn me into a loyal Democrat but brought me back to my socialist roots.

The fact you said you had social roots, suggests you never were a Republican in the first place...

No, I guess that's why I voted for GW twice and McCain and the lovely Alaskan part time governor. But I bow to your expertise in these matters. :p

And please try to get it right next time - It's SOCIALIST roots, not social roots. Humans are social creatures after all, so even YOU have those.

A lot of liberals voted for George W. Bush, seriously look at the people he was running against (a windbag tha was full of hot air, and a guy that flip-flopped so often he had no clue what position he was advocating at any given moment).

It's called a typo, I don't take issue with you when you've made typos...

Poor woman must be terribly disappointed in Obama. He's the opposite of what she apparently valued. BTW, it was the GOP leadership that accomplished much of the above.

While not defending the increase of the federal debt under President Bush, it's curious to see Clinton's record promoted as having generated a surplus. It never happened. There was never a surplus and the facts support that position. In fact, far from a $360 billion reduction in the national debt in FY1998-FY2000, there was an increase of $281 billion.

Verifying this is as simple as accessing the U.S. Treasury.

Still smarting over that I see. Problem is Bush won by every single recount that was undertaken. Get over it. It's ancient history now and we can all be thankful Gore was never elected POTUS.

You were a Republican so-and-so? You should be ashamed!

Reminds me of the Beverly Hillbillies episode where Jed refuses to become a bank VP after he looked up the word "vice".

Thankfully, I had the vision and wisdom not to join this un-American party but did vote for some of their candidates as we had a few moderates in NY back in the day.

Fact is that the economy thrived under Clinton and would have done so under Gore. The WTC would still be standing and we would be at peace. Frankly, we would be better off under Benedict Arnold than under Bush.

I voted Republican from my first vote in 1976 until 2004, when I could not vote for the 2nd George Bush (I like his father), when I voted for my friend for President since I could not bring myself to vote for either Bush or Kerry. The article (and the part that Stamperben quoted is exactly why I quit voting for the GOP. As long as they pander to people's worst fears and do everything they can to fire up those fears, they will not get my vote. We are paying the price for that and it is only going to get worse.

And as long as the right wing media gets its wishes in stirring up war hysteria with impunity, we will have further conflict. The treasonous NY Times's Judith Miller was largely responsible for pretending Iraq had WMD when it did not and now she cries 'stop picking on me':

Judith Miller wants people to stop blaming her? Ok... I've got a deal for her!

''
“I intend to write about this decision in the NY Times to send a successful team back home just as progress on WMD is being made.” Military officers quoted by Kurtz reported that Miller regularly told army personnel that she would go directly to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld or Undersecretary Douglas Feith about decisions with which she disagreed. “Essentially, she threatened them,” said one officer
So you weren't just wrong. You weren't even just a mouthpiece. You were actively bullying career military in service of chicken hawks like Doug Feith who feathered the nest of his son's college fund with blood money. Now, some might argue you were just star-struck when you wrote such wonderfully helpful stories as - "U.S. Aides Say Iraqi Truck Could be a Germ-War Lab,"
- "Radioactive Material Found at a Test Site Near Baghdad" and
- "U.S. Analysts Link Iraqi Labs to Germ Arms." ''

No question that Miller and Bush are traitors. Our Founding Fathers would have given them the hanging tree for their treason. Let's see the forum's infinite amount of capital punishment right wingers call for the same solution.

In the 90's I was a republican. I drank Hannity, Savage, O'Reilly, and Limbaugh's koolaid and supported Bush while hating Clinton. After listening to their rhetoric year after year, I realized that they had made me an angry person. After Limbaugh was exposed as a hypocrite for his arrest and illegal prescription drug addiction, I turned off talk radio and Fox News and have been trying to reclaim my soul after 6 years in the darkness. Witnessing the continued republican support for Bush during and after his crusade against the middle east, it solidified my decision to never jump on another republican bandwagon.

Not going to lie, this makes me want to say some things that would get caught in the filter for significantly more legitimate reasons. I sincerely hope that he's shot himself in the foot to the point where he can never successfully be elected. He's running against an incumbent, so if the state GOP's fairly certain that they're going to lose, they might be more willing to field wing-nuts there and electable candidates elsewhere.

I was the same. My father was a huge dittohead and so was I. Now, I can't stand to listen to him. I seriously doubt I will ever vote Republican again, even if the moderates take charge again. I have changed a lot since 2000.

Very glad to see that former Republicans here have seen the Light. Thank you for keeping an open mind.
It's actually sad seeing that some of these people feel that politics should run their life. I consider myself a conservative, but Jesus is my foundation and that is where I get all of my beliefs and most of conservative beliefs agree with the Bible, so that is why I call myself a conservative even if a few of their beliefs I don't agree with. And to the people who changed their beliefs because of OTHER people's actions..I've never understood that nonsense. So because other people with similar beliefs do something you think is bad you're going to change your whole belief system? That's like "Christians" who say they don't like all the things Christians are saying in America today, so they become a Muslim or atheist. Obviously they weren't very rooted in God in the first place if they changed their beliefs because of other people. And it's sad how often I see this ridiculous claim...
