  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I wonder what we're going to do

One of the first things Obama did when he got in office (so many really but this is just one) was to destroy NASA's original mission and make it one of outreach to the Muslims. No longer would we lead the rest of the world through space exploring through NASA, We would instead "hitchhike" on Russian rocketships. (I remember thinking wow! Michelle Obama really WAS serious that she was never proud of her country until her husband won the primary--wasn't even proud of the moon landing or how the whole nation pulled together on that real-live incident aboard Apollo 13 (it wasn't just a movie) or later on after the whole nation came together after 9-11.)

Well now that it's seen that Russia is indeed not very hospitable and is intent on taking over, I wonder how we'll be able to "hitchhike" on their rockets? Sounds more like we'll be left in the dust. Or perhaps Obama thinks he can tell Putin "I won't object to your military intents on Poland if we can take just one more ride...?"

This makes absolutely no sense. So... You're saying Obama killed NASA and Michelle hates America and now we can't catch a ride on a rocket. Right? Should we give Putin the Ukraine in case we need to catch another ride? We get it. You hate Obama. Can we have an actual discussion about a real issue?

No I'm saying that one of the first things Obama did was CHANGE the mission of NASA so that NASA would no longer be involved in space exploration. (He did that years ago--how come you don't seem to know?) We were just supposed to hitchhike when other nations sent rockets up. Seemed a good idea at the time (remember Hillary's "reset" button supposedly "resetting" our relations with Russia?)

Well now that Putin has "shown his colors" and is decidedly against the West, how are we supposed to continue space exploration?

Yep. That's a real issue. Are we giving up JFK's dream of space exploration? If not, how are we going to achieve it with no program?

The comment Michelle made was evidently so egregious as far as the Dems were concerned that they took her off the campaign trail until the furor about it calmed down. But it was just her opinion during the 2008 campaign. You must have heard it too? It wasn't a secret. But when I heard it, I couldn't imagine her not being proud of the country before her husband got the nomination. We had a lot to be proud about.

We're hitchhiking because our shuttle had some serious flaws which caused some accidents. We need a new vehicle for space exploration. However, *nobody* has put forth anything that would increase NASA funding.

It just keeps going down or being kept low. I have no idea why you are blaming Obama for this when all those in power have not worked to fund NASA.

That is easily proven to be a lie. Many NASA employees are involved in space exploration every single day.

What Does NASA Do? | NASA

NASA Today

NASA conducts its work in four principal organizations, called mission directorates:

Aeronautics: manages research focused on meeting global demand for air mobility in ways that are more environmentally friendly and sustainable, while also embracing revolutionary technology from outside aviation.

Human Exploration and Operations: focuses on International Space Station operations, development of commercial spaceflight capabilities and human exploration beyond low-Earth orbit.

Science: explores the Earth, solar system and universe beyond; charts the best route of discovery; and reaps the benefits of Earth and space exploration for society.

Space Technology: rapidly develops, innovates, demonstrates, and infuses revolutionary, high-payoff technologies that enable NASA's future missions while providing economic benefit to the nation.

there is some rightfully deserved flak that obama should receive. this one that you put forth I can not comprehend. this is almost on the same level, same vain as illuminati, peter joseph, alex jones, jesse ventura speak.

Maybe you can't understand, but I was surprised to hear the very SAME question last night. (There wasn't an answer unfortunately.) What ARE we going to do now that we no longer have NASA and can no longer rely on the Russians to get us into space? Forget that there's supposed to be an International space station? Forget that we were supposed to have an exploration to Mars? You know that previous astronauts (first man to walk on the moon, commander of Apollo 13) all were pretty upset over the decision to scrap the program. They were told "it's okay, we'll just hitchhike", well now that we can see that isn't going to work, what are we going to do? Revert to the 1950s and forget that JFK had a dream?

AMDG,

Neither side has done a thing to increase the budget NASA gets. In fact, all sides have decreased NASA's budget in favor of their own pet projects. It's a really stupid thing that our politicians have done but it cannot be pointed at one person.

Increase a budget to do what--help the Muslims simply feel better about themselves?? (That's what Obama told NASA is their new mission--and according to friend, who lives in the state where NASA had most of it's employment, when Obama told them that, there simply was no need for a budget increase. And yes, she said it meant jobs were lost because NASA's mission was no longer space exploration and people WERE depressed.) We even got rid of the shuttles. Didn't you see the news where cities vied for them? They are all gone. Our wings have been clipped.

So now what? Plans to restore to NASA her mission? Plans to build a bigger, safer rocket or shuttle? Plans to reawaken the excitement of the space program for the next generation (and all the new discoveries that will bring)? Or plans to settle back into "has been" status and "light up the eyes" of the next generation with fantasy video games?

The shuttle was, for 15-20 years, an outdated, unsafe ship. If it was a vital system, the time to budget and build its replacement was 20-25 years ago. It was decided that the SHuttle was not a vital system anymore. Travel to the Moon is not something that would yield much in the name of science so it is not a priority. No system that we had was suitable for a manned mission to Mars and maintaining them would not bring us closer to that goal. While I am very impressed that you happen to know a person who lives in Texas or Florida, I know people in NASA. They are working on exploring Space every day. None of them has Muslim outreach among their duties. Your friend is hysterical and you should be concerned for her.

Ah, lives in the same state.

Well, I just asked my friend who works for NASA and says there is no truth to what your friend has said except that budget cuts cost jobs. You know, like the budget thing I've kept talking about.

I thought of using that search engine to find the article you don't seem to remember reading about, but there were just too many for me to list. So I picked one--one from the UK so no one could accuse me of just repeating Repub talking points (like I am so often falsely accused).

Barack Obama: Nasa must try to make Muslims 'feel good' - Telegraph

Aside from the fact that all this paper did was quote people with an axe to grind without really putting forth any actual journalism

I would point to media matters on the subject:

Yet again, an Obama official says "Muslim," right-wing media freak-out follows | Blog | Media Matters for America

What Obama said was the NASA needed to work on a global scale with the best scientists they could find. That meant reaching out to all nations, even Muslim nations to find the best people possible.

It take a lot of spin to make that into "NASA's job is to make Muslims feel good" but, hey, we have computer disks that spin at 10,000 rpm so it's possible I guess.

One must never assume that the right-wing has any interest in speaking the truth anymore. They no longer thrive on that. They thrive on paranoia and fear. The used to have ideas and thoughts I agreed with. I haven't heard a new idea put forth since about 2008 when their entire motivation changed to obstructing the guy in the White House.

Told you, that there were too many newspaper article for me to post so I picked one. Don't like it? Pick another. (You know I'm surprised that you all didn't hear about NASA getting a new mission back when it first happened.)

But you didn't. Now since there isn't a space mission for NASA, we've divested ourselves of the shuttle, and Putin is no longer our "buddy-buddy" who we can rely on for hitchhiking, even you guys should be wondering "what's next?" and "how are we going to continue space exploration under the circumstances?" You know that's all I asked. Ya'll have the agenda.

NASA still has a space mission. However, people don't support space exploration enough in this country to convince their congresspeople to increase funding so NASA does what it can.

Do you have nothing to say to the lie that Obama changed it to a Muslim outreach mission when the exact quote that right-wing paranoid sites are latching onto don't support their claim?
