  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I wonder what we're going to do

NASA still has a space mission. However, people don't support space exploration enough in this country to convince their congresspeople to increase funding so NASA does what it can.

Do you have nothing to say to the lie that Obama changed it to a Muslim outreach mission when the exact quote that right-wing paranoid sites are latching onto don't support their claim?

You didn't bother to read the news article or choose one you do like? It wasn't a lie. The head of NASA indicated that Obama told him three changes in the mission of NASA and one of them was an outreach to the Muslims to make them feel better about themselves for their contributions in math and science. When it happened it was in all the papers. I can't believe you are now claiming that you had no idea especially since the facts (now no shuttles, having to hitchhike into space but now that's impossible because Putin is not our buddy, etc.) is staring you in the face!

You said "No I'm saying that one of the first things Obama did was CHANGE the mission of NASA so that NASA would no longer be involved in space exploration."
That is a lie. NASA is still exploring space. Pioneering science in aeronautics and space was NASA's first mission and it remains their primary mission. The friends I know who work with or for NASA are among America's best scientists. Stop spreading false information about these brilliant and dedicated Americans, many of whom are veterans. They are proud of the valuable work they're doing and I am too. Grow up.

I think you didn't bother to read the news article without your Obama-hate glasses on.

Mr Bolden said: "When I became the Nasa administrator, he [Mr Obama] charged me with three things.
"One, he wanted me to help reinspire children to want to get into science and math; he wanted me to expand our international relationships; and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering."

He was charged to do three things. See how it says "CHARGED" and not "CHANGED". I could post definitions if you'd like me to.

First is to reinspire children into science and math. THIS IS A GOOD THING.

Second expand international relationships. THIS IS A GOOD THING.

Third reach out to the Muslim nations to pull them into the space mission. THIS IS A GOOD THING.

It is only with paranoia that one can view it as a bad thing.

Glad you think it's good. The head of NASA didn't. (Probably a lot more in NASA aren't too happy about it.) Neil Armstrong, and other astronauts don't. There are quite a few people out of jobs who don't appreciate this leaving us "high and dry". Bunch of Legislators who don't think this was all too wise. And of course many Americans are asking "what no space program after what JFK said and did? What was the purpose of the moon race? And remember all those discoveries? Gone. Why?"

You can take your "hate" talk and do what you want with it, but the fact is we are stuck. No space program. No way to hitchhike either. No sparking the imaginations of the youth. The youth are simply "in the mud" with nothing exciting on the horizon. And all you guys can think about is that someone had the audacity to point out that we haven't a space program anymore and we can't even hitchhike our way into space. Sheesh.

I'm sure you have a link about how the head of NASA didn't like reaching out to the International community and how Neil Armstrong didn't either, right? You wouldn't be lying here, would you?

That's a moon rock

It's still where it's supposed to be and still in existence.

Hence all discoveries are NOT gone.

QED

You're wrong.

You're wrong.

Discoveries, as in things that end up being helps to the human race (even minors ones like powdered orange drink and different foods and fabrics that ended up useful for the astronauts and filtered down to society--not simply rocks! ^_^. We won't be getting anymore since there will be no need.

You though I meant moon rocks. That's rich! :D

Well perhaps if the rocks yielded precious minerals (like the ones China has been buying up) or if the rocks yielded gold or silver...

Here's a partial list of things we owe to the space program:

The dramatic pearl clutching is amusing. Keep it up. Makes my Cesar Chavez Day pleasant.

Here's a partial list of things we owe to the space program:

If you're going to copy and paste from a bot that has been spamming forums with this identical list, you should at least credit the bot. Also, you should fact check just a little bit before you type lest you be caught spreading falsehoods yet again. We'll start at the beginning of the list.

Scheduling software

I am ignorant as to the history of scheduling software. It seems likely that it would have been invented with or without a space program, but we'll give it to you. I can't prove it to be false, so that was some of your finest cutting and pasting.

semiconductors
Semiconductors in the rectifier sense were common at the end of the 1800s. Bell Labs invented the modern semiconductor in the 1940s. Transisters were in pocket radios before several years before we put a man in space.

microchips

The microchip was invented by Texas Instruments and was quickly put to use in all sorts of government and consumer goods, rockets among them. It was not discovered for or because of the space program.

structural analysis software

No clue, not going to google. Great job.

air quality monitors

Air quality monitors of one type or another existed in submarines and mines in the 1930s. If you count canaries, long before that.

virtual reality

That is far to vague a term to state when or why it was invented. Air and sea travel simulators preceded our space frogram though.

Advanced keyboards

Who determines which keyboards are "advanced"? That is so vague as to be meaningless.

Customer Service Software

I bet Obama gave it to India.

Database Management System

Give Melvile Dewey his dew. Due.

Not going any further. Do you really believe that we owe "athletic shoes" and "self-righting life rafts" to the space program? Both were relatively commonplace at the end of the 1800s. Much good came from the space program and space exploration and much good will continue to. If it is important to put a man into space, we will do so. Although there isn't a whole lot to be gained by sending astronauts to the ISS at this time, we will likely continue to do so. Your constant hand-wringing and chicken-littleing reflects negatively on your politics (which don't need your help) and the Church you profess to believe in when it suits you.
