All the better. :)
I am, however, under the impression that a lot of people speak out against exploitation in porn while appealing to capitalist mantras in all other areas.
I am also under the impression that a lot of people defend "consuming porn isn´t healthy for you" by referencing to the production conditions, while I have rarely heard "consuming bananas isn´t good for you" substantiated with reference to the production conditions. (IOW: the question whether it´s damaging your physical and/or mental health is a completely different question than whether the production conditions are acceptable.)
And on another note: If we all agree that the production conditions are unacceptable the obvious postulation to make would be to improve the production conditions (as opposed to criticizing the product, per se).

Sorry, but I don´t recall having made any statement to that effect. You must confuse me with another poster. If not, I´d be thankful if you´d point me to the post where I made this claim. I´ll be glad to stand corrected.

Oh my gosh I am so sorry, I must have quoted the wrong post!! I meant andy b's post somewhere up there :(

I'm sorry about that!!

I'm not sure how I feel about porn..

I don't think it turns people into serial killers. I've been into S&M since I was 3 or 4 and I haven't really gotten any darker since then.. Snuff films and other gory porn just look stupid to me, lol.

I do think an over-consumption of porn and sexuality in the media is leading to more and more people becoming bored of sex at an increasingly younger rate. This isn't a good thing, but I'm not really sure what we can do about it.

Porn can lead people to various fetishes, but I do not see how this is a bad thing. Usually people who become serial killers are those who are already born with abnormal mental problems. I highly doubt porn had any factor in their crimes.

The anti-pornography camp used to be a place for right-wing, religious fanatics. But it is increasingly being secularized as those formally "pro-sexual liberation" and "anti-religious" folks realize that Internet pornography is an incredibly ugly beast.

The following article highlights it:

Will quitting porn improve your life?

And this website.

For those that don't want to read the article, here are some important quotes from the article. These quotes come from people across the religious and political spectrum:

"It really messes up your mind for what sex is actually supposed to be. It sets the hopes too high for normal men and women to be able to perform at that level. I believe that’s causing a lot of relationship problems among my peers."

"Every walk through a public place feels like I’m 14 years old again, searching for beauty, but not in an objectified way. My mind is more free for things that give me joy."

"I want society to value sex as something meaningful"

"Before [stopping look at porn], whenever I’d see a woman, the first thing I would look for is what have they got hanging on back there, or how big are their breasts. Lately, I’ve been catching myself looking at their eyes.”

"[ I ] was raised by parents who told [me] masturbation was healthy and viewing pornography was a valid form of sexual expression."

These quotes are not solely from "porn addicts" either, just people that watched porn casually. I swore off porn about 3 years ago, not because I was an addict (it wasn't hard to stop doing it), but just because I didn't want to have those images in my mind anymore and I wanted to improve my self-control in all aspects of my life (including diet, exercise, procrastination, etc) so that I could live a more productive and valuable life.

This sounds strange that they wouldn't embrace Hugh Hefner's lifestyle as their own. Isn't Hefner's libertarianism in accordance with his atheism/agnosticism?

So, everyone is suddenly seeing the light and will be committing for life to one partner in holy matrimony? Right? [I've gotta see this!!!!]

I don't get the connection, unless I assume you don't really know what atheism or agnosticism are.

Wow, its kind of disturbing how many people with the christian faith cross are not really against porn and/or still look (at least from what I am reading). I thought the bible made it pretty clear porn is a sin. I'm tempted to report this thread since its almost supporting porn. >.<

His what?

He's hardly what I would call a libertarian. In any case, his lifestyle does not define libertarianism for me.

I did. She happened to leave me, but I was in it for life.

I thought the bible made it pretty clear porn is a sin.

I've read the entire Bible and I don't remember that. Is there an eleventh commandment that I had missed?

They also don't seem to know what libertarianism is.

Questioning other people's Christianity is also against the rules though I think! ;)

Also: You don't need to be socially conservative to be a Christian, you can be liberal and a Christian! :)

I think it's actually the other way around. Financial pressures, changes in the way that relationships work, the way that people have found that getting to know and pursue relations with the opposite sex and the ease of production on the Internet have simply increased demand.

From what I understand, studies show the opposite, that porn use and legalized prostitution seem to decrease sex related crimes.

It amazes me that prostitution is illegal when porn is not.

Do you think that porn should be illegal and if so how do you think that would benefit anyone?
