  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is a general shout out to people who enjoy canoeing:

Where do you live? What routes/rivers/lakes have you done? Of all of them, which were your favorite?

I live in edmonton alberta.
I've been on the North Saskatchewan, Athabasca Rivers (in Alberta), and the Columbia in BC. All trips were between 3-5 days.

Athabasca was my favourite due to the challenge of the river at the time. The Columbia trip was beautiful though!

FYI! Canadians. whether you are aware or not, the PC government snuck in a clause in their last budget that repealed a law that allowed Canadian citizens access to public water ways.
That means all canoe trips are technically illegal. Is that going to play into your decisions at all?
For me? Not even the tiniest bit. I personally think that is absurd.

I haven't canoed in years. I almost bought one this year though but things changed so quick I felt that I needed to just hang on a little bit longer. But when I was going I have been on the Ogeechee river many times but only for a day at a time. Many small ponds and the lake at Helen Georgia to remember a few.

Sounds like you have had some good trips. It is fun to be out like that.

I just took up canoing last year...I have an old aluminum Michicraft canoe that I put on top of my truck and I hit the Alpin lakes in the mountains here in Idaho. Lots of little mountain top lakes and reservoirs to go to.....

I like the canoe because it is nice and quite, I can take it anywhere, and it is not high maintenance like a big power boat. My 3 year old daughter loves the thing too...she sits in the middle in a little chair and has her own little paddle.

I live in Milton, Fl. It is a small town just east of Pensacola. SantaRosa County may have the most beautiful rivers and canoe floats in Fla. None are deep or fast moving but if you want hours of slow moving canoe or tubing quiet time...... "Y'all come on down"
Blackwater River, Coldwater, Juniper are the most popular with Bobs Canoe rentals and Adventures Unlimited probably the main canoe trip outfits. I think there are more but Bobs has always been the one I use cause he's closer.
The beach heads are Snow White, the water is cold cold cold and the temps are hot, hot hot.
Pack lots of cold drinks and food and have a good time.
If you like canoeing...... You'll love it.

I have been down the St. Mary's river bordering Ga. and Fl. No real rapids, just easy going picnic. Reasonably scenic, a few rope swings here and there to stop off for.

Way back when I canoed the Delaware river a whole lot. It got built up since then.

Also the Adirondack lakes, they are fun, but of course there are portages. They were probably my favorite.

Also canoed the Colorado river below the Grand Canyon, down by Yuma. It was pretty boring and hot. There were a few fun places, but mostly the sides of the river were built up with large, unattractive and non-native boulders to prevent erosion. It just basically reminded me of a shrunken riparian area.

I love canoeing and have canoed on several lakes, ponds, and rivers in Maine for many years. I can't possibly say which one I like the most because it is just to hard to choose just one. Each one has its own beauty, its own challenges, its own personality, and from year to year they change because of water runoff from either a lot of snow and rain or lack of snow and rain. So it makes all these a little different from year to year or few years or how ever often it is when I have been back to them.

I have always had fiberglass canoes with webbed seats and have recently put in padded seats and seatbacks from LL Bean. My 9 year old daughter loves going out with me on these waterways. We have several where no motorized watercraft are allowed. So it gives it a unique ride. She likes to paddle up front. We have a lot of fun. She is unsure about the kayaks still, but that will change in time. I love the canoe for the time of relaxation out on the water.

Canoeing is very enjoyable. It can be a little tippy when entering and exiting, but until you have intentionally flipped a canoe :D, you don't realize how far you can lean before you capsize. The longest canoe trip I went on was a 50 mile trip down the Stanislaus River in Central California ( Its been a while, I think that is the river). Going 10 miles a day, I will say a kayak is much faster :).
